The first edition of this family history was printed in 1982 and included only descendants of Robert’s son, Jordan Brooks. With the discovery of the 1783 Personal Property Tax List showing Jordan Brooks living in the same household of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1), the authors became convinced that Jordan was indeed the son of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1). It appears that Jordan and his brother, Robert Brooks, Jr., were omitted from the will of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1) because they left Virginia prior to the death of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1). This book was originally based on a six page manuscript written by Susie (Brooks) Danforth in 1946. It was later discovered that Myrtle (Lackey) Ashley also had a similar manuscript which contained less interpretation and better reflected the author’s ancestry. Each manuscript contains unique information, but both appear to have been derived from the same source on the older generations of Brooks families. During an interview with Susie Danforth in 1978 (Susie was 102 at the time), it was learned that much of the information contained in her manuscript was obtained from the Family Bible of Allen Turner Brooks and Helena (Luco) Brooks (Susie’s parents). The authors have been unable to locate a copy of the information contained within this Bible and would appreciate any information which would aid in locating it. This Bible, if located, would be the only Bible which mentions the author’s direct ancestor, Jordan Brooks and several of Jor- dan’s children and their families. Abbreviated versions of Susie (Brooks) Danforth’s manuscript were published in 1963 in the book “Wimberley Legacy,” edited by Williedell Schawe and in Susie’s own book, “One Hundred Years in Wimberley,” published on her 100th birthday in 1976. Another major contributor was Kenneth H. Thomas, Jr. who was the primary re- searcher of the descendants of Jordan’s son, Isham Brooks (Ken has been the ge- nealogist columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution since 1977). In addition to this input, Ken significantly contributed to many other sections of this book and deserves proper recognition for his participation in the compilation of this book. Jordan’s son, Isham Brooks and many of his descendants were published in 1950 in the book “Brooks and Kindred Families” by Ida (Brooks) Kellam. It erroneously shows that Isham Brooks was the son of John Hanna Brooks. In 1977, John M. Jones, Jr. published the book, “History of Jones and Brooks Fam- ilies of Escambia County, Alabama” which include descendants of Robert Rose Brooks, son of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1). Since publication of the first edition of this book in 1982, Bruce Montgomery Edwards published another book in 1985 worth noting, “The Brooks of Virginia.” This book provides excellent source material for future research on the ancestry of Robert Brooks, Sr. (1). The complilation of this family history (and eight other family histories of equal size) was initiated by Bernice (Brooks) Casey, co-author of this publication. Without her interest in family history, the Casey family may have never compiled any of their family histories. Although Bernice died in March of 2003, she will con- tinue to be listed as the co-author this family history because she assisted with these publications for over twenty years. BROOKS FAMILY HISTORY 7-7 INTRODUCTION continued Information has been obtained from many sources and references are listed with each descendant in order to aid future research on the future Brooks family re- searchers.
