Seven world-leading performances, two American records, an American junior record and a world decathlon record were turned in as a potent Team USA lineup – again largely powered by youngsters – for the 2005 World Outdoor Championships in Helsinki was selected. Nineteen-year-old Kerron Clement and 20-year-old Sanya Richards had the top individual performances of the meet, earning Visa Champion honors with their world-leading wins in the men’s 400-meter hurdles (47.24) and Visa women’s 400 meters (49.28), respectively (see story, p. 2). With Dee Dee Trotter (49.88) and Monique Hennagan (49.96) behind Richards, three American women broke 50 seconds in the same race for the first time in history. RECORDS FOR GILREATH, CLAY, VAILL Although Clement’s and Richards’ times were worth the most points using IAAF scoring tables, Erin Gilreath emerged with a new American record. The women’s hammer thrower unleashed a toss of 73.87m/242-4 on her final attempt to break her own AR and post a 2005 world leader. Olympic silver medalist Bryan Clay added a decathlon world record in the discus, throwing 55.87m/183-3 to surpass a 26-year-old mark (55.00m/180-5). Clay went on to win his second straight U.S. title with 8,506 points. Teresa Vaill, the 42-year-old, 2004 Olympian, THE SPORTING IMAGE broke the American record in the 20,000m race walk ERIN GILREATH with her time of 1:33:28.15. Also making history was triple Olympic medalist Justin Gatlin, who became the first man in 20 years to win both the Visa 100m and Nike 200 meters at the USA Outdoor Championships. Gatlin first won the 100 in 10.08, then came back the next day to win the 200 in 20.04. MEN’S HURDLES FOR THE AGES The men’s 110-meter hurdles final was one of the greatest races in history, leading the way for an amazing American contingent for Helsinki that ran the three fastest times of 2005. Four-time world champ and seven-time national titlist Allen Johnson was first across the line in 12.99, followed by Dominique Arnold (13.01PR) and Olympic silver medalist Terrence Trammell (13.02PR). THE SPORTING IMAGE MORE WORLD LEADERS BRYAN CLAY The men’s 400 also served up a world leader as 21-year-old Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Wariner won comfortably in 44.20 seconds over 22-year-old Darold Williamson (44.62) and 23-year-old Andrew Rock (44.70), both of whom, like Wariner, are Olympic relay gold medalists. Olympic silver medalist Allyson Felix turned in a world leader in the Visa women’s 200 meters (22.13), and 1 2005 OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS Michelle Perry posted a world leader in the semifinals of the Nike women’s 100 hurdles (12.43). She also won the final in 12.66. MORE NOTABLE PERFORMANCES … Two-time USA indoor champion Miguel Pate returned from knee reconstruction surgery in 2003 to win the men’s long jump. Pate leaped 8.35m/27-4.75 to defeat defending world and Olympic Champion Dwight Phillips (27-2). Two-time defending champion Tim Broe shattered the Championships record in the men’s 5,000 meters, his time of 13:12.76 leading three men under Doug Padilla’s 1985 mark of 13:16.42. Lashinda Demus’ time of 53.35 to win the women’s 400 hurdles was a personal best THE SPORTING IMAGE ALLEN JOHNSON and #2 time in the world in 2005.
