Appendix A lists them in full. The students attend public schools throughout the country that are subject to the May 13, 2016 Dear Colleague Letter issued by the Departments of Education and Justice. It is their constitutional right to bodily privacy that is negatively impacted by the Letter and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit’s decision. The National and State

The arms and seal of James Brooks (1512-1558), third Bishop of Gloucester (1554-1558) The Society’s Badge by Lez Hough - Journal 2, Gloucestershire (and North Avon) Catholic History Society, February 1987 At an early meeting of the society’s standing committee it was decided that a badge should be devised for the society which would incorporate the arms of James Brooks, the Marian Bishop of Gloucester, as its principal element. I undertook to produce a design, and this the committee has now accepted. Being an armorist rather than a historian, it is with some diffidence that I offer the following thumb-nail sketch of Bishop Brooks; details can be read in, for example, the Dictionary of National Biography, and it may well be that one of my colleagues will wish to write more fully about him in due course. James Brooks – so spelt in the D.N.B., and which looks less angular than Broks, the version which heraldry books seem to prefer – was born in 1512 in Hampshire, studied at Oxford from 1528, and pursued an academic career there, becoming Vice-Chancellor of the University in 1552. He lived through the turbulence of the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI without apparently attracting much attention, but his appointment as chaplain to Bishop Stephen Gardiner of Winchester probably indicates where his religious sympathies lay throughout these years. Shortly after Mary I’s accession he was elected Bishop of Gloucester, received his consecration in Saint Saviour’s Church, now Southwark’s Anglican Cathedral, and was invested with the temporalities of his new see in May 1554.

Labor’s Conflict provides an insightful account of the transforma- tions in the Party’s policies, performance and structures since its formation. Seasoned political analysts Tom Bramble and Rick Kuhn offer an inci- sive appraisal of the Party’s successes and failures, betrayals and electoral triumphs in terms of its competing ties with bosses and workers. The early chapters outline diverse approaches to understanding the nature of the Party and then assess the ALP’s evolution in response to major social upheavals and events, from the strikes of the 1890s, through two World Wars, the Great Depression, and the post-war boom. The records of the Whitlam, Hawke, Keating, Rudd and Gillard governments are then dissected in detail. The compelling conclusion offers alternatives to the Australian Labor Party, for those interested in progressive change. Fifty years in the Northwest http://www.loc.gov/resource/lhbum.01070 Library of Congress At the age of nineteen years, I landed on the banks of the Upper Mississippi, pitching my tent at Prairie du Chien, then (1836) a military post known as Fort Crawford. I kept memoranda of my various changes, and many of the events transpiring. Subsequently, not, however, with any intention of publishing them in book form until 1876, when, reflecting that fifty years spent amidst the early and first white settlements, and continuing till the period of civilization and prosperity, itemized by an observer and participant in the stirring scenes and incidents depicted, might furnish material for an interesting volume, valuable to those who should come after me, I concluded to gather up the items and compile them in a convenient form.

SANCTITY AND AUTHORITY: DOCUMENTING MIRACLES IN THE AGE OF BEDE by THOMAS EDWARD ROCHESTER A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History School of History and Cultures College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham July 2017 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Abstract This doctoral dissertation investigates the writings of the Venerable Bede (673-735) in the context of miracles and the miraculous. It begins by exploring the patristic tradition through which he developed his own historical and hagiographical work, particularly the thought of Gregory the Great in the context of doubt and Augustine of Hippo regarding history and truth. It then suggests that Bede had a particular affinity for the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles as models for the writing of specifically ecclesiastical history. The use of sources to attest miracle narratives in six hagiographies known to Bede from Late Antiquity are explored before applying this knowledge to Bede and five of his early Insular contemporaries. The research is rounded off by a discussion of Bede’s use of miracles in the context of reform, particularly his desire to provide adequate pastoral care through his understanding of the ideal bishop best exemplified by Cuthbert and John of Beverley.

  • 1. Introducing the Splat Pack
    1. INTRODUCING THE SPLAT PACK The ‘New Blood’: a Name Catches On Excitement about the Splat Pack seems to have been ignited with the April 2006 issue of the British film magazine Total Film. The issue featured an article by Alan Jones, entitled ‘The New Blood’. Its title was accentuated by a ‘Parental Advisory: Explicit Content’ label to let readers know they were about to enter forbidden, dangerous territory. Evidently, the local cineplex had been transformed into dangerous territory because ‘a host of bold new horror flicks’, such as Eli Roth’s Hostel and Alexandre Aja’s 2006 remake of Wes Craven’s 1977 shocker The Hills Have Eyes, had assaulted audiences with levels of brutality missing in ‘all those toothless remakes of Asian hits starring Jennifer Connelly, Naomi Watts and Sarah Michelle Gellar’ (Jones, 2006: 101, 102). Jones devotes his article to showcasing the young directors who were ‘taking back’ horror from purveyors of ‘watered-down’ genre movies (2006: 102). One of the auteurs in the movement featured in Jones’s article is Eli Roth who positions himself as one of the power players of this movement. Jones’s article features a photo of Roth brandishing a chainsaw, a devilish smirk on his face, surrounded by photos of bloody carnage from Roth’s Hostel, including an image of a man being castrated with a pair of bolt cutters. These grisly visuals imply that Roth can deliver the gory goods. In the article, Roth – a graduate of New York University’s film school whose father and mother are, respectively, a Harvard professor and fine artist – comes across as forcefully as these images 13 BERNARD 9780748685493 PRINT.indd 13 13/01/2014 10:43 Grahams HD:Users:Graham:Public:GRAHAM'S IMAC JOBS:14636 - EUP - BERNARD (TWC):BERNARD 9780748685493 PRINT SELLING THE SPLAT PACK would suggest.

Introduction The bill is an omnibus bill, which seeks to amend the following legislation: • Income Tax Act 2007 • Tax Administration Act 1994 • Goods and Services Tax Act 1985 • Student Loan Scheme Act 2011 • KiwiSaver Act 2006 • Companies Act 1993 • Land Transfer Act 2017 • Social Security Act 2018 • Accident Compensation Act 2001 • Taxation (Disclosure of Information to Approved Credit Reporting Agencies) Regulations 2017 • Public and Community Housing Management (Prescribed Elements of Calcula- tion Mechanism) Regulations 2018. The bill has three main purposes. First, the bill seeks to improve the current tax set- tings by ensuring that the current tax rules are working as intended. 273—2 Taxation (Annual Rates for 2020–21, Feasibility 2 Expenditure, and Remedial Matters) Bill Commentary The bill also seeks to modernise the tax settings regarding the Inland Revenue Department’s administration of KiwiSaver and Working for Families. Finally, the bill would set the annual rates of income tax for the 2020-21 tax year. The New Zealand National Party differing view National Party members believe that New Zealand taxpayers have been subject to bracket creep for many years.
