The actors Kit Harington, Taron Egerton and Colin Morgan also make her story even more touching. Vera wants to become a writer even if it goes against her father's expectations. She passes the entrance examination for Oxford to join her brother Edward and his friends Roland and Victor. Before going there, with Roland, who shares his interest for her poetry and writing, they begin a romance. But war is declared and it changes all their plans. Roland, Victor and her brother decide to join the British army and are sent to the western front. To get closer to them Vera decides to volunteer as nurse in the hospital... This film is really emotional. It shows how war can affect people, not only physically but a lso mentally. War destroys families, innocence and future. As Vera Brittain said : “Our generation would never be new again. Our youth has been stolen from us.” The fact that she really lived those moments makes you watch the film in a different way and that is one of the reasons why I liked this film and why I recommend it..

Mitchell, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Fantastic stories offer new ways of dreaming, yet even in magical worlds race remains the “unspeakable thing unspoken.” My project analyzes the racialization of Black female characters positioned as protagonists in early 2000s mainstream fantasy media, looking primarily at Gwen from BBC’s Merlin, Tiana from Disney’s Princess and the Frog, and Cinderella from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. By only incorporating Black female actors through “colorblind” casting, writers and producers make Black female characters visible but fail to incorporate the necessary cultural specificity of representation. Consequently, the adaptation of fantasies defined by white cultural values resist the new centrality of the “Dark Other” and instead re-inscribe oppressions of the racial past. These supposedly colorblind narratives of “worlds-that-never-were” cannot divorce historical settings and archetypes from their temporal connotations when applied to a Black female protagonist.

    1. INTRODUCING THE SPLAT PACK The ‘New Blood’: a Name Catches On Excitement about the Splat Pack seems to have been ignited with the April 2006 issue of the British film magazine Total Film. The issue featured an article by Alan Jones, entitled ‘The New Blood’. Its title was accentuated by a ‘Parental Advisory: Explicit Content’ label to let readers know they were about to enter forbidden, dangerous territory. Evidently, the local cineplex had been transformed into dangerous territory because ‘a host of bold new horror flicks’, such as Eli Roth’s Hostel and Alexandre Aja’s 2006 remake of Wes Craven’s 1977 shocker The Hills Have Eyes, had assaulted audiences with levels of brutality missing in ‘all those toothless remakes of Asian hits starring Jennifer Connelly, Naomi Watts and Sarah Michelle Gellar’ (Jones, 2006: 101, 102). Jones devotes his article to showcasing the young directors who were ‘taking back’ horror from purveyors of ‘watered-down’ genre movies (2006: 102). One of the auteurs in the movement featured in Jones’s article is Eli Roth who positions himself as one of the power players of this movement. Jones’s article features a photo of Roth brandishing a chainsaw, a devilish smirk on his face, surrounded by photos of bloody carnage from Roth’s Hostel, including an image of a man being castrated with a pair of bolt cutters. These grisly visuals imply that Roth can deliver the gory goods.
