The Report we now present offers an overview of our institution’s activity during this remarkable period, with particular emphasis laid on the most notable achievements. In recounting the past year we must perforce speak of the centenary of Salvador Dalí’s birth, since our institution has played an essential role in commemorating the event. Over the course of the year this was undoubtedly the most important recurring theme for our Board of Trustees and for the Foundation team as a whole, who through their dedication and sound professionalism successfully faced up to the dual responsibility of organising an international event of great magnitude while at the same time keeping the institution’s usual activities fully up and running. What is more, this project not only managed to achieve all the objectives pursued for disseminating the Master’s life and oeuvre, but also afforded the institution itself a unique opportunity for global projection that it managed to turn to good advantage. With nearly 1,400,000 visitors, our museums’ activities showed most notable growth, comfortably exceeding at all centres the peak figures achieved in previous years. To this figure we might add the approximately 1,740,000 visits received at our Web site over the same period. The cultural activities and promotion and dissemination work carried out worldwide during 2004 and these first months of 2005, the programmes set under way to achieve deseasonalisation of visits towards periods with lower visitor attendance, the development of relations with the tourism sector at various levels and the major investments made by the Foundation on security, environmental quality and management capacity lead us to expect to be able to continue to receive similar numbers of visitors, though now without the driving force of the centenary. Our Foundation has become definitively enshrined as the chief academic reference worldwide for all matters related with Salvador Dalí. The Centre for Dalinian Studies played a leading role in drawing up the content of the centenary, both directly through the writing of articles, theses, exhibition catalogues, books, etc. and indirectly by facilitating, supporting and supervising an abundant and wide-ranging production by third parties: books, documentaries, multimedia publications, films, articles, academic research projects, theatre and ballet works, musical compositions, exhibitions, catalogues and much more besides. As Dalí Year Commissioner, the Centre’s Director fulfilled the mission entrusted to her by the Ministry of Culture, coordinating the centenary timetable, its events and projects and supervising its content. The year 2004 also stands as a landmark as regards Salvador Dalí rights management: the legal dispute over effective control of intangible rights for Salvador Dalí that had brought the Foundation up against the company Demart Pro Arte B.V. in courts worldwide was finally brought to an end by bringing that company under the ownership of the Foundation. The Foundation thus brought to a culmination a long and difficult process in its quest for worldwide control over the Master’s rights, and has now placed itself in an advantageous position to take its founding purposes still further and pursue them more effectively. All this represented a significant all-round increase in our institution’s activities, putting its organisational capacity and response capabilities to the test. In addition to its special dedication to the events in commemoration of the centenary of Dalí’s birth, the Foundation kept under way its technical research programmes, its acquisitions policy, the task of the Dalí works Authorising and Cataloguing Committee, the legal expert-advice service, the business development programmes and work in the fight against fraud, among other aspects. I can indeed vouch that the usual levels of excellence have been achieved in all these fields. In short, we have come successfully through the test of the centenary and have managed to turn to good advantage the high-profile platform the event afforded the institution, which is thus bound to find its work facilitated in the future. Finally, the excellent economic results we present reflect dynamic and efficient management. Thanks to this we will be in a position to ensure a high level of self-funded investments and great dynamism for carrying out the exceptional role we play within our socio-economic setting and, essentially, for achieving our founding purposes.
