The most iconic site in the town dates back to this period - Tzarevets Fortress - the royal hill where the kings and nobles used to live. Thanks to its location - spread around several hills with Yantra river wandering in between - Veliko Tyrnovo is an unusually scenic town to discover! Arbanassi is a village just a few kilometres away of Veliko Tyrnovo and a popular weekend spot for culture and recreation. It is known for the large number of old churches, monasteries and traditional architecture. One of the former residences of the communist president of Bulgaria is situated in the outskirts of the village. Visit the Nativity museum-church - its walls are an impressive gallery of Bulgarian 17th c. art. Samovodska Charshiya is the 19th c. street where the craftsmen had their workshops. Today, it is remarkably well-preserved - a quaint and picturesque alley where you will discover numerous souvenir shops. It’s one of the best places in Bulgaria to look for authentic, hand-made and locally produced souvenirs. Here, in a traditional coffee-shop, you can also try a cup of coffee on sand! Shipka Monument rises on top of a peak in the Balkan Mountain to commemorate one of the most decisive battles during the war between Russia and the Ottoman Empire in August 1877. The monument houses an exhibition telling the epic story of the battle. Climbing all the way to the peak and the monument is awarded by a stunning 360 view of the Balkan mountains. The Thracian Tomb in Kazanlak is one of the most important Thracian sites in Bulgaria. It was accidently discovered during World War II. The inside displays a beautiful collection of wall paintings dating back to the 4th c. BC.
