• Decca Discography
DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75. There were a few engagements with the Bavarian Radio in Munich from 1977- 82, but the first substantial contract with a German symphony orchestra did not come until 1982.

  • Parsifal De Richard Wagner La Bayreuth
Fig. 1 – Teatrul Festivalelor din Bayreuth. • Wagner's Der Ring Des Nibelungen
Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen - A comparative survey of 18 selected cycles by Ralph Moore I do not know how exactly many Ring cycles are available but I would guess at least thirty, and I offer the following brief evaluation on the understanding that I make no claims to comprehensiveness; this is a personal survey of the eighteen cycles in my own collection. I candidly admit to having discounted several cycles from the 80’s by Haitink (1988-90), Levine (1987-90), Janowski (1980-82), Boulez (1980), as that was decidedly not a Golden Age of Wagner singing, nor have I included the recent, live cycle from Jaap van Zweden on Naxos, as I do not share the enthusiasm some MusicWeb colleagues have expressed for this set as “truly a Ring for our age”; I fear that to me that does not sound like a compliment. I have heard, even owned and then discarded them all because I honestly do not think that their casts can hold a candle to the artists in earlier recordings. Nor does their superior stereo or digital sound necessarily present any advantage, in that it only reveals even more distinctly the vocal inadequacies of the singers compared with those of the immediate post-World War II generation. When I want to hear that marvellous music, it is to recordings from the mid-50’s and 60’s in particular that I turn, because that was the era which gave us stereo sound but could also still stage a Wagner opera with stellar voices, whereas many previous recordings are superbly performed but sonically compromised by being in live mono.

  • Wagner's Parsifal
Wagner’s Parsifal - A partial survey of the discography by Ralph Moore There are in the CLOR catalogue over a hundred recordings of Parsifal, Wagner's Christian-Buddhist Schwanengesang. I review twenty here in this survey, including the only five studio versions and the first recording of excerpts, obviously not aiming for comprehensiveness but trying to consider the most significant and estimable versions. Extraneous noise and poor sound quality are particularly vexing in an opera which is often quiet and meditative in character, so I imagine that most listeners will want at least one studio recording, free of coughs and thumping. Parsifal is a “Marmite opera”; some are devoted to it, others repulsed. It’s slow, stately progress and relentless sententiousness require reserves of concentration greater than those which the average Wagner acolyte is prepared to devote to its appreciation. Twenty-five years elapsed between its germination and its realisation as Wagner’s last opera, and for some that inordinate period of gestation and creation is a metaphor for how they feel when sitting through its entirety, which typically takes well over four hours on CD, let alone attending a live performance with intervals. James Levine managed to extend his live 1985 performance in Bayreuth to an agonising four hours and forty minutes, and Reginald Goodall, the Celibidache of Wagnerian opera, even takes five minutes longer than that - whereas Herbert Kegel’s live performance in Berlin is a whole hour shorter, which is still too long for those who find Gurnemanz to be a frightful old bore and the eponymous hero hardly more alluring.

Wald, The Warren Alpert Medical School, Brown University Michelle M. Daniel, University of Michigan Medical School Abstract: Objectives: The humanities, including narrative arts, are a valuable tool to foster reflection for professionally competent clinical practice. Integrating such study into traditional medical school curricula can prove challenging. A preclinical elective on opera and medicine was developed and piloted at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University for pre-medical and medical students to foster reflective capacity supporting professional identity formation. Methods: Interdisciplinary faculty from the departments of arts and sciences conducted nine facilitated discussion sessions. A field trip to the Metropolitan Opera, NY complemented students’ operatic studies. Students were asked reflection-inviting questions concerning their emotional response to operatic scenes, characters, and physician-patient interactions throughout the course and given opportunities to discuss how opera reflects and reinforces stereotypes and societal stigma of patients, diseases, and physicians.

  • A Single Work Today, and a Singular One
A SINGLE WORK TODAY, AND A SINGULAR ONE. Alban Berg’s Wozzeck (1825) is notable as the first full-length atonal opera and a masterpiece reflecting the bitter mood after the First World War. Berg based his text on Woyzeck by Georg Büchner (1813–37), a brilliant but short-lived writer from the start of the 19th Century. His play, a searing attack on militarism and social injustice, was left unfinished at his death, existing only as a number of short scenes. It was first performed only in 1913 in Munich and in Vienna the following year, a performance that Berg attended. Working on the opera during his own service in the War, Berg must have seen uncanny relevance across the centuries. Although the opera has inspired many innovative productions in past decades, we shall watch it in a 1972 film that places its humanity in a realistic historical context. The synopsis below is adapted from Wikipedia; the italicized musical descriptions after each scene are Berg’s own. We shall watch the opera complete, omitting only the scenes involving the Doctor. Act One, Scene 1 (Suite). Wozzeck is shaving the Captain who lectures him on the qualities of a "decent man" and taunts him for living an im- moral life. Wozzeck slavishly replies, "Jawohl, Herr Hauptmann" repeatedly to the Captain's abuse. However, when the Captain scorns Wozzeck for having a child out of wedlock, Wozzeck protests that it is difficult to be virtuous when he is poor. The flustered Captain, unable to comprehend Wozzeck, finally concedes that he is a decent man, and dismisses him.
