Killin Local Cancer Research Committee is holding it’s annual Ladies’ Lunch on Saturday 20th May 2017 in The McLaren Hall in Killin. Great food, fabulous company, lovely drinks, a variety of shopping choices and, back by popular demand, our guest speaker from 2 years ago.

4 Margaret’s Retiral Telephone Book As readers may have noticed, the new Telephone From Killin News Book is now available in Killin at News First, The Post Office, the Library and The £1+ shop and in at the Crianlarich Store, also in at Brodies. This is the 14th local phone book produced in Killin since the first typed and duplicated 16 page version in 1978 costing 15p. The first six versions were compiled by the Church in aid of church funds and since then the Killin News has produced three in aid of our own funds and, since 2005, six in aid of the Falls of Dochart Retirement Home. The last one in 2013 brought in £2006 for the Home. Although printing costs have gone up considerably since the 2013 version, we have not increased the price. There have been variations over the year, sometimes ads were included and sometimes, as now, just a classified section. The last four versions have included a numerical list so that you can check from a number who has called. Many people now have mobile numbers instead of, or as well as, land lines and technology is developing rapidly, so maybe more information will have to be included in any future directory, or, perhaps more likely, there will be no need for a physical telephone book. (Those involved in the production of the books would be pleased about that!) The Killin News held its annual “Christmas Work on the present version started eighteen Jolly” at the Killin Hotel in February when Margaret months ago and for reasons beyond our control had was thanked for all her hard work over the years to stop and start several times. Many things have and was presented with some garden tokens. changed since summer 2015 and, while we hope we have picked them up, we cannot guarantee to have done so and we apologise for any errors.

19 Letters I would just like to thank everyone for all the lovely flowers, gifts, well wishes and cards myself and Sam received following the loss of our baby daughters Anna and Murrin. We are very grateful for all the kindness everyone has shown us through this very difficult time, we really have appreciated it. Also a big thank you to all the Masons for their generosity in paying for the frame that we have Anna and Murrins’ hand and footprints in. I would also like to thank all the lovely ladies in the craft group for all of their hard work in knitting little hats to donate to the charity So Precious. So Precious is a charity run by volunteers that knit little hats, cots, teddy bears to put in memory boxes and so much more for babies born too soon, from neonatal to premature. The little hats Anna and Murrin were given were beautiful and made them look so comfortable. Myself and the charity really appreciate that you have taken the time to knit all these lovely hats and they are being donated to Larbert hospital. marieke mcbean Naomi

We just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who came along to Georgia’s 3 rd birthday party at the end of January and helped to make the day such a success. It was wonderful to celebrate how well she is recovering from her scalding accident with so many of her friends. She was overjoyed to meet and dance with Upsy Daisy and Iggle Piggle!

21 22 Fly Tipping Disgrace

The recycling facility at the bottom of the village has been subject lately to an increasing amount of fly tipping, with many people commenting on the smell and the presence of rats. The site has recently been cleaned up and will now be placed under surveillance. It would be very sad for the village if this facility is withdrawn due to fly tipping by the selfish few. In addition it gives a bad impression of our lovely village to visitors parking in the nearby car park.

24 Loch Tay Safaris Highland Safaris this week (1st April) are launching the much anticipated Loch Tay Safaris. A 12 seater rib boat excursion which lasts 90 minutes round the Loch where passengers will hear all about the myths and legends of the magical body of water. It’s almost 80 years since a commercial vessel was based on the Loch. The rib has been named Iolaire, which means ‘eagle’ in Gaelic and was also the name of Donald Riddell’s great grandfather’s steam yacht, which served as an anti-submarine vessel in the First World War. Donald and Julies’ families both have connections with the Loch and its surrounding areas stretching back a long way. Highland Safaris are also celebrating their 25th anniversary this year

33 Progress at Acharn Forest Biomass Site

Angus Kay

Acharn 6MWe biomass CHP plant The Acharn project will comprise an advanced gasification combined heat & power (“CHP”) plant totalling 6MWe in capacity. Fuel supply will be provided from the surrounding catchment by established suppliers in the form of locally sourced virgin biomass. Softwood will be chipped and dried on site before being fed via conveyors into a series of 10 gasifiers. A superheating process creates the required gas to power turbines that feed energy back into the grid. Expected to generate 44.65 GWh each year, the site will be able to power 13,530 homes. This biomass project will offset a considerable amount of CO2, 21,889 tonnes, the carbon footprint of 4,864 average UK homes. The construction and then operations and maintenance of the plant are expected to generate a number of direct full time jobs.
