Introduction Fig. 1: freight and persons crossing the Danish borders, 2006 and 2009/2011 The Danish-German border is short in comparison to other EU internal borders. Still it is relevant also as the border between the continent and Scandinavia, or the countries within the Nordic Council. The border’s history is conflict ridden. It was drawn in 1920, together with other new borders drawn in connection with the post WW-I order in Europe, reflecting (not only) the result of a plebiscite. The decades from 1920 to the 1950’s witnessed a bordering process with clear demarcation as well as the introduction of strict visa regimes and migration restriction, accompanied by the cut of economic flows and continued political challenges to the exact location of the border. Especially Denmark was interested in securing the border from possible German claims of revision. This changed only after Denmark joined the EC in 1973. Infrastructure investments as a freeway (opened fully in 1983) connecting the Jutland peninsula with the Hamburg metropolitan area and its seaport (2nd-3rd in Europe), the shorter “line as the birds fly” rail and road connection across Fehmarn-Lolland, disrupted by a 1 h ferry passage (1963), the introduction of frequent ferry services on the Rostock-Gedser route after German reunification (1990) and the planned fixed link under the Fehmarn Belt together with railway and road improvements on both shores (opening in the 2020’s) have made the region the major transport corridor between Europe and Scandinavia.

    The Cimbri of Denmark, the Norse and Danish Vikings, and Y-DNA Haplogroup R-S28/U152 - (Hypothesis A) David K. Faux The goal of the present work is to assemble widely scattered facts to accurately record the story of one of Europe’s most enigmatic people of the early historic era – the Cimbri. To meet this goal, the present study will trace the antecedents and descendants of the Cimbri, who reside or resided in the northern part of the Jutland Peninsula, in what is today known as the County of Himmerland, Denmark. It is likely that the name Cimbri came to represent the peoples of the Cimbric Peninsula and nearby islands, now called Jutland, Fyn and so on. Very early (3rd Century BC) Greek sources also make note of the Teutones, a tribe closely associated with the Cimbri, however their specific place of residence is not precisely located. It is not until the 1st Century AD that Roman commentators describe other tribes residing within this geographical area. At some point before 500 AD, there is no further mention of the Cimbri or Teutones in any source, and the Cimbric Cheronese (Peninsula) is then called Jutland. As we shall see, problems in accomplishing this task are somewhat daunting. For example, there are inconsistencies in datasources, and highly conflicting viewpoints expressed by those interpreting the data. These difficulties can be addressed by a careful sifting of diverse material that has come to light largely due to the storehouse of primary source information accessed by the power of the Internet. Historical, archaeological and genetic data will be integrated to lift the veil that has to date obscured the story of the Cimbri, or Cimbrian, peoples.

Allen Every country tells itself stories about its origins and the moments that define its history. Many of these stories are connected to wars, for example the tale of how George Washington and his troops crossed the frozen Delaware river to surprise the British and turn the tide of the Revolutionary War, or the way the American public rallied after the attack on Pearl Harbor to retool the American economy and support American troops in the fight against fascism. Not surprisingly, the stories we tell about our own country are most often ones about wars from which we emerge victorious, rather than those that reveal a society in disarray or economically devastated.

Lewis University of Caen Normandy, CRAHAM [email protected] As their military fortunes waxed and waned, the Scandinavian armies would move back and forth across the Channel with some regularity [...] appearing under different names and in different constellations in different places – Neil Price1 Little is known about the power of the Danish kings in the second half of the ninth century when several Viking forces ravaged Frankia and Britain – Niels Lund2 The Anglo-Saxon scholar Patrick Wormald once pointed out: ‘It is strange that, while students of other Germanic peoples have been obsessed with the identity and office of their leaders, Viking scholars have said very little of such things – a literal case of Hamlet without princes of Denmark!’3 The reason for this state of affairs is two-fold. First, there is a dearth of reliable historical, linguistic and archaeological evidence regarding the origins of the so-called ‘great army’ in England, except that it does seem, and is generally believed, that they were predominantly Danes - which of course does not at all mean that they all they came directly from Denmark itself, nor that ‘Danes’ only came from the confines of modern Denmark. Clare Downham is surely right in saying that ‘the political history of vikings has proved controversial due to a lack of consensus as to what constitutes reliable evidence’.4 Second, the long and fascinating, but perhaps ultimately unhealthy, obsession with the legendary Ragnarr loðbrók and his litany of supposed sons has distracted attention from what we might learn from a close and separate examination of some of the named leaders of the ‘great army’ in England, without any inferences being drawn from later Northern sagas about their dubious familial relationships to one another.5 This article explores the case of one such ‘Prince of Denmark’ called Hálfdan ‘king of the Danes’.

The Danish government is also pleased to learn that no recommendations for immediate action were given following the reporting mechanism for Denmark. Therefore these comments are based on the following general recommendations adopted by the Committee of Ministers CMR/RecChl(2017)4: 1. Increase the level of radio broadcasting and provide television broadcasts in German, in co-operation with the German speakers 2. Take measures to increase awareness and appreciation of German as a minority language of Denmark throughout the country To the extent possible, this report has been prepared in accordance with the outlines for State Reports and the decision of the Committee of Ministers (2018), which stated that countries should not go more than 5 years without reporting.     Danish and German national symbols By Inge Adriansen National symbols are meant to make all of us - individuals as well as members of specific groups - feel part of the common nation. National symbols are meant to illustrate our shared past and show our expected future. If a symbol is properly worked out, we’ll be able to identify ourselves with the hidden message included in the symbol. In the 1960es national symbols were simply out! The use of national symbols expressed an oldfashioned conservative philo­ sophy, which - at the time - only a few wished to be identified with. To day it is quite different. Since the mid-seventies natio­ nal symbolism has had a renaissance in Denmark, and apparently this can be directly connected with Denmark’s entry into the Eu­ ropean Economic Community, the EEC. At the referendum in 1972 regarding Danish membership the political agitation flourished, and the opponents touched the national chords as much as possible. So they did at yet two other EEC-referendums in 1986 and 1992. A couple of days before the voting in 1986 I visited Aarhus. In the main street I was con­ fronted with a row of posters, stating: »Holger says no!« - »Hol­ ger shall always say no« - »Do as Holger. Say no!« This was the brief, distinct message of a long line of posters. A foreigner would never be able to guess who Holger was and what he refused. But to a Dane it was obvious! Who else could it be but our old national hero Holger Danske (Dane), who cal­ led upon all his compatriots to vote NO to the EC? The posters were distributed by SF, the People’s Socialist Party.

Guiding this transnational narrative are three prominent members of the Schleswig-Holstein uprising: the radical nationalists Theodor Olshausen and Hans Reimer Claussen and the liberal nationalist Rudolph Schleiden.
