Artist Handbook Artist Handbook Dear artists, dear guests, we would like to welcome you to HELLERAU and Dresden! We hope that you can make yourself at home in HELLERAU for the time of your stay - we will try our best to make it an unique experience for you. We are very happy to have you here with us and to be able to present your artistic work to our audience. One of our main aims is to develop HELLERAU as a place of exchanging ideas, to initiate encounters and meetings with other artists and with our audience. So we welcome you with all our hearts to become part of this interaction and hope that you will leave with new friends and experiences. This handbook tries to provide helpful information to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Do not hesitate to ask us anything, if you have any questions. Welcome to HELLERAU and see you either at rehearsal, at your performance or afterwards for a drink and talk – or all of the above. Warmest regards, Carena Schlewitt and her team 2 Welcome to our apartments! We are very happy to have you with us and hope that you can use your time here in the most beneficial and positive way. To make this stay as pleasant as possible, please consider the following small advises and requests from our side. 1. Please keep your Key always with you. Doors around here close easily and then you won‘t be able to re-enter. 2. The Time for depature is at 10:00 am. Please leave the apartment-key in the postbox on the 2. floor next to the kitchen. 3. Please take care of the room and common areas while you are here . 4. If you smoke, please do so outside - fire detectors are installed inside. 5. Please always lock the main door of the building from 7 pm onwards. 6. Be careful not to lose your key and the transponder. Replacing the lock is quite expensive. 7. Please close windows when leaving the apartment. 8. Please turn off all electronic devices, heating and lights whenever not needed. 9. No open fires in the apartment. Please never leave candles unattended. Welcome to Dresden-Hellerau! There is a LIDL Supermarket just one tram-stop away (tram no. 8, direction: Hellerau / stop: Brunnen- weg). Walking takes about 10 minutes. It provides you with all basic groceries from Monday to Saturday from 7 am - 9 pm. For other supermarkets you have to take the tram no. 8 (direction: Südvorstadt) to- wards the city center. Restaurants are also quite rare in these surroundings, but take the tram to the city and you‘ll find wha- tever your heart desires: Dresden Neustadt is the vibrant and hip part of town with many restaurants, take-away-places, bars and clubs. To get there, just take tram no. 8 (direction Südvorstadt) and get off at stop Louisenstraße. Then walk into Louisenstraße and explore. Dresden Altstadt is the historic part of town, there are many things to see such as galleries, museums and old historic buildings. Take tram no. 8 (direction Südvorstadt) to Albertplatz and follow down the "Hauptstraße" until you reach the famous golden horseman. Behind the statue, you need to cross the ri- ver Elbe over the bridge and then you will find yourself in front of the Semper Opera and all major sights are in its immediate vicinity. On days of performances the restaurant is open until 10 pm or later. Companies consisting of more than 10 artists who wish to have lunch or dinner in the restaurant, please order in advance.     SACHSEN – IKONEN DER MODERNE Sachsen mit seiner 1000-jähirgen Kulturgeschichte hat wie kaum ein anderes Bundesland das gesamte Architekturspektrum zu bieten – von Gotik bis modern-minimalistisch. Neben der Kunst und der Musik prägt dieser architektonische Facettenreichtum Sachsen als Kulturreiseziel Nummer 1 in Deutschland. In Sachsen wurden viele für das Bauhaus prägende Denkansätze vorweggenommen, und hier wirkten bekannte Architekten des neuen Bauens. So wurde in Dresden bereits ab 1909 mit den Deutschen Werkstätten für Handwerkskunst, als Mitgründer des Werkbundes, an einer Produktionsstätte neuen Typus gebaut – und gleichzeitig an der ersten Gartenstadt Deutschlands, Hellerau. Die Bauhaus-Epoche hat in Sachsen interessante und touristisch relevante Zeugnisse hervorgebracht. Das Josef Albers’ Glasfenster im Leipziger Grassimuseum, das Wandgemälde von Oskar Schlemmer im Zwenkauer Haus Rabe, die Versöhnungskirche in Leipzig, das Kaufhaus Schocken in Chemnitz von Erich Mendelsohn – heute Staatliches Museum für Archäologie - stehen dafür. Das Haus Schminke von Hans Scharoun in Löbau ist eines der weltweit vier herausragenden Beispiele der Stilrichtungen "Neues Bauen" und "International Style". Es fehlt in keinem Architektur-Lexikon und wird in einem Zug genannt mit dem Haus Tugendhat von Mies van der Rohe in Brünn/Brno (1931), der Villa Savoye von Le Corbusier in Poissy bei Paris (1928-29) und dem Haus Kaufmann " Fallingwater " in Mill Run, Pennsylvania (1935-39) von Frank Lloyd Wright genannt. Es steht im Übrigen nicht nur für Besichtigungen offen, sondern man darin auch übernachten. Zusammen mit dem Nieskyer Wachsmann-Haus ist es eine wichtige Station im Verbund TOPOMOMO (Topography of the modern Movement) – einem internationalen Verbund von herausragenden (Wohn)Gebäuden der Moderne. Zum „Jubiläum 100 Jahre Bauhaus“ wird das Bundesland mit vielfältigen Veranstaltungen und Ausstellungen vor allem das baukulturelle Erbe würdigen und an bestehende Präsentationen und kulturelle Schwerpunktthemen, etwa das Thema Industriekultur, anknüpfen.

    M224 Bedroom for the Dresden 'Heirat und Hausrat' exhibition Introduction Mackintosh designed a bedroom interior with furniture and decoration for the exhibition Heirat und Hausrat (Marriage and Household Goods) organised by the Dresdener Werkstätten für Handwerkskunst (Dresden Handicraft Workshops). Margaret Macdonald contributed textiles to the room. Authorship: Five drawings by Mackintosh for the bedroom were in his possession at the time of his death. Photographs of the exhibited room were published under his name in Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration and Innendekoration. 1 Status: Temporary Chronology 1900 19 December: Mackintosh writes to Hermann Muthesius that he and Margaret Macdonald will try to make a whole room for Dresden, but that the expense is a problem. He asks for further particulars of the exhibition. 1 1902 21 August: Arrangements for a large exhibition of work by the Dresdener Werkstätten für Handwerkskunst are under way. Founder and proprietor Karl Schmidt writes to the mayor of Dresden requesting the use of halls in the Ausstellungspalast (exhibition palace) and gives details of his plans, potential participants and projected expenditure. 2 1903 13 May: Muthesius writes to Mackintosh that he is sending a group of Germans to Glasgow to view his work.     Then and now – an overview 1909 – 1914 Hellerau makes the grade 1909 The non-pro t Gartenstadt Hellerau GmbH and the housing association Baugenossenscha Hellerau eGmbH are founded thanks in part to the vision of the cra sman and entrepreneur Karl Schmidt, the idea being to o er workers living at the Garden City a musical education. 1910 Commi ee formed to establish a Jaques-Dalcroze music school (Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, Adolphe Appia, Alexander von Salzmann and Heinrich Tessenow), nanced by the brothers Wolf and Harald Dohrn. 1911 Foundation stone ceremony for the music school. Lessons already begin in the November. Homes for teachers and a guesthouse added. 1912 / 1913 Hellerau Festival Theatre opens; world première of Paul Claudel’s “L‘Annonce faite à Marie”. Many well-known gures from the European avant-garde art scene travel to Hellerau to see it, giving the school its reputation as a festival theatre. 1914 Tram route to Hellerau completed. The school closes until the end of the First World War.
