    Biodiversity of the Water Reservoirs in the Vicinity of Usje Marl Quarry S.Petkovski, (1); I.Mastoris, (2); N.B.Kormusoska, (3); (1) NGO BIOECO Skopje, Republic of Macedonia (2) TITAN Cement Company S.A., Athens, Greece (3) Cementarnica “Usje” A.D., Skopje, Republic of Macedonia [email protected] Abstract In line with the activities of WBCSD/CSI task force on biodiversity, Titan uses specific tools for screening Group quarries versus areas of high biodiversity value, like the EMERALD network of Macedonia. The water reservoirs (artificial lakes) inside the Usje Marl Quarry, in proximity with the Titan Cement Plant Usje (Skopje, Macedonia), were gradually ‘formed’ in the 1980’s, after excavating closed pits inside the mine plan area. Freshwater supply to these confined water bodies is due to precipitation and surface rainwater inflows. Plant and animal species have inhabited the area, including the lakes, by natural processes, except the fish stocking that was made by the sport fishermen employed with Usje. Currently, the area more or less resembles a natural wetland ecosystems. By initiative of Usje, and in line with Titan’s Corporate Social Responsibility Policy, an Investigation Study on Hydrology, Hydrogeology & Biodiversity was conducted. This paper is going to present findings and recommendations of the investigation related to biodiversity. Besides the check lists of recorded species, for certain taxonomic groups a “potential list of species” was prepared, as a tool for evaluation of the quality of habitats. Despite the inevitable environmental degradation, the degree to which the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and associated species have survived, even in a modified and reduced state, is surprising.

Title: Karl Jordan: A Life in Systematics Abstract approved: Paul Lawrence Farber Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history.

Clarke Abstract: The Silver-studded Blue is often considered to be a sedentary species, not moving more than 50 m during its life. However, based on recent research and my own experience from Surrey, this is not the case. Males can easily move 200 m when relocated away from ant nests, and new sites can be colonised within a few years from source sites at least 3 km away, probably a year or so after the ants Lasius niger or Lasius alienus have colonised. Silver-studded Blue is a butterfly of early successional habitat, so it needs to be mobile in order to find suitable habitat for the next generation. If it was very sedentary, then colonies would soon die out as habitat matures and becomes unsuitable to support the ants and the butterfly. Introduction This article has been prompted by the statements that Silver-studded Blue (Plebejus argus) is sedentary, barely moving more than 20 m, with 50 m considered exceptional, and breeding populations of 100 m or more considered isolated, based on three mark-release-recapture studies (Thomas, 2014) and (Eeles, 2019). This study is also the first to provide estimates of demogra- phic parameters, detectability and vagility of the Iolas blue. Weekly count surveys performed on 38 host plant plantation patches resulted in an occupancy rate of 50 % with mostly very low relative abundance indices. Habitat analysis demonstrated that abundance was best explained by the combination of para- meters among which host plant vitality, patch connectivity, solar irradiations and the number of host plant seedlings were prominent. Capture-mark-recapture experiments undertaken in four populations revealed large differences in absolute abundance, an average adult life expectancy of 3.6 days and a very high catchability (82 %) and individual detectability (86 %). Furthermore, a dispersal analysis demons- trated that 78 % of dispersal events were less than 550 m (maximum of 1490 m), with significantly more dispersal in females (both in dispersal rates and dispersal distances).

Many myrmecologists all over the world offer useful information as text files, images or databases. A good part of the information focuses on re- gional faunas and biogeographic regions, with updated species checklists and geographic distribution maps. Many internet sites deal with specific ant groups or single genera and provide dichotomous and sometimes interactive identification keys, extensive information about the biology and/or geographic distribution of the species. Text information is often illustrated with images of living or dry mounted ants. Additionally, detailed pages about anatomy, mounting of ants, colony husbandry or ant conservation (red lists) can be found. In discussion forums it is possible to exchange facts and thoughts about all myrmecological facets with other interested people. A special offer for taxonomists is the increasing number of databases about museum collections and their type catalogues. Zusammenfassung Für Ameisen gibt es mittlerweile ein sehr gut entwickeltes Informationssystem im Internet. Weltweit bieten zahlreiche Myrmekologen brauchbare Informationen in Form von Textbeiträgen, Bildern und Datenbanken an. Ein guter Teil der Information beschäftigt sich mit regionalen Faunen bzw. biogeographischen Regionen, z.B. in Form von Artenlisten und Verbreitungskarten. Viele Internetseiten handeln auch spezielle Ameisentaxa ab, stellen dichotome oder gar interaktive Bestimmungsschlüssel vor und offerieren ausführliche Informationen zur Biologie und Verbreitung der Arten. Die Texte werden häufig durch Bilder präparierter oder lebender Ameisen ergänzt.
