Cross-Gender Attempts by Indonesian Female Impersonator Dancer Didik Nini Thowok Madoka Fukuoka Graduate School of Human Sciences, Osaka University, Japan [email protected] ABSTRACT This article examines the creative stages of Didik Nini Thowok (1954‒), a female impersonator and cross-gender dancer based in Java, Indonesia. In addition, it discusses his endeavours of crossing gender boundaries by focusing on his use of costumes and masks, and analysing two significant works: Dwimuka Jepindo as an example of comedic cross-gender expression and Dewi Sarak Jodag as an example of serious cross-gender expression. The findings indicate three overall approaches to crossing gender boundaries: (1) surpassing femininity naturally expressed by female dancers; (2) mastering and presenting female characters by female impersonators and cross-gender dancers; and (3) breaking down the framework of gender itself. Keywords: Didik Nini Thowok, cross-gender, dance, Java, Indonesia © Penerbit Universiti Sains Malaysia, 2014 58 Wacana Seni Journal of Arts Discourse. Jil./Vol.13. 2014 INTRODUCTION This article examines the creative stages of Didik Nini Thowok (1954‒), a female impersonator and cross-gender dancer based in Java, Indonesia.1 In addition, it discusses his endeavours of crossing gender boundaries by focusing on the human body's role and Didik's concept of cross-gender dance, which he has advocated since his intensive study of the subject in 2000. For the female impersonator dancer, the term "cross-gender" represents males who primarily perform female roles and explore the expression of stereotypical femininity. Through his artistic activity and unique approach, Didik has continued to express various types of femininity to deviate from stereotypical gender imagery.

Asia Society Presents Music and Dance of Yogyakarta Sunday, November 11, 2018 7:00 P.M. Asia Society 725 Park Avenue at 70th Street New York City This program is approximately ninety minutes with no intermission In conjunction with a visit from Hamengkubuwono X, the Sultan of Yogyakarta in Indonesia, Asia Society hosts a performance by the court dancers and musicians of Yogyakarta. The Palace of Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat is the cultural heart of the city. From generation to generation, the Sultans of Yogyakarta are the traditional governors of the city and responsible for passing on art and culture heritage. The entire royal family is involved in preserving these art forms, and the troupe must perform with a member of the royal family present. The dances from Yogyakarta will be accompanied by gamelan music native to Java. Program Golek Menak Umarmaya Umarmadi Dance Masked Dance Fragment (Wayang Wong) “Klana Sewandana Gandrung” Bedhaya Sang Amurwabhumi About the forms: Golek Menak The golek menak is a contemporary example of the seminal influence exerted by the puppet theater on other Javanese performing arts. This dance was inspired by the stick–puppet theater (wayang golek), popular in the rural area of Yogyakarta. Using the three dimensional rod-puppets, it portrays episodes from a series of stories known as menak. Unlike the high-art wayang kulit (shadow puppets), it is a village entertainment, and it did not flourish at the court. As a dance drama, golek menak focuses on imitating this rod-puppet theater with amazing faithfulness. Human dancers realistically imitate the smallest details of puppet movement, right down to the stylized breathing of the puppets.

Nyai Bei Mardusari, a Wife of Mangkunegara VII and a famous Surakarta Dancer and Pesindhdn (1936) Singer-dancers ( talgdhek) with small gamelan at roadside warung (1955) Photographs by Claire Holt WHO IS TH E PESINDHEN? NOTES ON THE FEMALE SINGING TRADITION IN JAVA R. Anderson Sutton* Those who have attended performances of gamelan music in Central Java can be in no doubt that the solo female singer (pesindhen) is accorded a role of special prominence. Usually situated conspicuously in front of the gamelan, she is set off from the male instrumentalists for all to see. Amplifiers often blast her voice at peak volume over the full gamelan ensemble. In the performance of many pieces she is given solo passages (andhegan), which draw all attention exclusively to her. One of my teachers in Java, Suhardi, used to tell me that there was no sense in playing gamelan if there were no pesindhen. Although for some pieces he would adopt the "loud-playing" style, with no vocal or soft-sounding instruments of any kind, he was like most Javanese performers and listeners in his fondness for the "soft-playing" style— in which a pesindhen is an essential component. Commercial cassette recordings of gamelan music, almost without exception, feature the vocal line of the pesindhen at a much higher dynamic level than that of any instrumental part. On the covers of cassettes appear the names and often the photographs of the pesindhen (usually several)* 1 who sang in the recorded perform ance. The names of these singers are generally well known, and buyers often choose a particular cassette because it features one of their favorite pesindhen.

The M usic of Bedhaya Anduk: A Lost Treasure Rediscovered Noriko Ishida1 Bedhaya is a genre of traditional Javanese court dances performed by nine female dancers accompanied by a gamelan ensemble, the main component of which is a vocal chorus, in a style of gamelan music called bedhayan. The court of the Kasunanan in Surakarta, or Solo, Central Java, has long been famous for its bedhaya. More than thirty bedhaya titles are found in manuscripts of song texts produced in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but of the thirty-odd bedhaya for which we have the lyrics, those which have been performed until now are only three: Bedhaya Ketawang, Bedhaya Duradasih, and Bedhaya Pangkur. As for the rest, we have lost either the choreography or the accompanying music, or both, and therefore they cannot be performed properly any more. Bedhaya Anduk, also called Bedhaya Gadhungmlathi, is one of those bedhaya that contemporary musicians have been unable to perform because both its choreography and the accompanying music were lost, but I recently discovered the notation of what seems to be the melody and musical accompaniment of Bedhaya Anduk in one of the notebooks written in 1907 by a Solonese court musician. Alas, I have not yet been able to find any other, independent source to corroborate my conclusion that this is the music of Bedhaya Anduk, but judging from the high artistic status of the musician who notated the piece, and from the lyrics and the melody itself, all of which will be discussed below, it seems safe to say that the notation in question is genuine.

Florida Twenty-five years ago, Nusjirwan Tirtaamidjaja published the Badhaya Katawang litany in Javanese as an appendix to his article, "A Bedaja Ketawang Dance Performance at the Court of Surakarta."1 Preceding the litany was a call for its translation; the present article ventures a translation of this difficult and complicated lyric as a belated response to that call. To the English-language reader this translation serves as a needed supplement to Tirta- amidjaja's article, an article in which he wrote that "although the dance itself has no plot or story to tell, the litany sung by the female choir conveys the essential meaning of the whole ritual."2 The dance, music, and litany of the Badhaya Katawang belong to Kangjeng Ratu Kidul, the spirit "Queen of the Southern Ocean," and to her serial consorts, the dynasts of Mata- ram. This queen, whose official court title is Kangjeng Ratu Kencanasari,3 rules over the Javanese spirit world from her marvelous palace in the depths of the Indian Ocean off Java's southern coast. She is popularly called "Nyai Rara Kidul" or "Venerable Maiden of the South." A wondrous character of terrible and marvelous powers, this Queen of the Southern Sea is still venerated and feared by many Javanese.4 Tales concerning the origins, antecedents, and early personal history of Ratu Kidul are many and varied.5 One of the better known and more widely repeated versions of her past I am deeply grateful to G.R.

Sunan Kali Jaga Sunan Kali Jaga is one of the Wali Sanga,1 and remains an important figure for Muslims in Java because of his work in spreading Islam and integrating its teachings into the Javanese tradition. Throughout his time proselytizing, he used art forms that, at the time, were both amenable to and treasured by the people of Java. Sunan Kali Jaga is thought to have been born in 1455, with the name Raden Syahid (Raden Sahid) or Raden Abdurrahman. He was the son of Aria Wilatikta, an official in Tuban,2 East Java, who was descended from Ranggalawe, an official of the Majapahit Kingdom during the time of Queen Tri Buwana Tungga Dewi and King Hayam Wuruk. Sunan Kali Jaga’s childhood coincided with the collapse of the Majapahit Kingdom recorded in the sengkalan “Sirna Ilang Kertaning Bhumi,”3 referring to the year 1400 Caka4 (1478). Seeing the desperate situation of the people of Majapahit, Raden Syahid decided to become a bandit who would rob the kingdom’s stores of crops and the rich people of Majapahit, and give his plunder to the poor. He became well known as Brandal5 Lokajaya. One day when Raden Syahid was in the forest, he accosted an old man with a cane, which he stole, thinking it was made from gold. He said that he would sell the cane and give the money to the poor. The old man was Sunan Bonang,6 and he did not approve of Raden Syahid’s actions. Sunan Bonang advised Raden Syahid that God would not accept such bad deeds; even though his intentions were good, his actions were wrong.

• Reinventing Tradition: New Dance in Indonesia 1 by Sal Murgiyanto
Reinventing Tradition: New Dance in Indonesia 1 by Sal Murgiyanto Introduction I would like to begin this lecture by expressing my sincerest respect and deepest sorrow for the thousands of people who died as victims of the dreadful earthquake and deadly tsunami in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and Aceh, Indonesia. Still, in the midst of the disturbing pictures and reports published in newspapers, and eerie scenes broadcast on television in December 2004, miracles were also told. A two month-old baby girl was sucked into an undertow and thrown back by a tidal wave alive into her mother’s lap. Early in the morning after Christmas, a ten-year-old girl sat beside her father enjoying the beauty of Phuket’s beach in Thailand. Upon seeing the water on the beach receding drastically and, from afar, white tidal waves surging one after the other, Kelly told her dad, “A tsunami is coming in twenty or thirty minutes and there will be disaster!” She had learned this fact in a class prior to her vacation. The wise father told the story to a coastguard who ordered everybody to leave the beach immediately and head back to the hotel. This speedy action saved more than 400 human lives; thirty minutes after the announcement the tsunami destroyed everything standing on the beach. Saving the lives of many, Kelly was called the “Angel of [the] Beach.” 2 There is still one more miracle to relate. Forty kilometers from the epicenter of the December 2004 earthquake sits Simeulue, a small island in the Indian Ocean 150 kilometers off the west coast of the province of Aceh, on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia.
