Cross-Gender Attempts by Indonesian Female Impersonator Dancer Didik Nini Thowok Madoka Fukuoka Graduate School of Human Sciences, Osaka University, Japan [email protected] ABSTRACT This article examines the creative stages of Didik Nini Thowok (1954‒), a female impersonator and cross-gender dancer based in Java, Indonesia. In addition, it discusses his endeavours of crossing gender boundaries by focusing on his use of costumes and masks, and analysing two significant works: Dwimuka Jepindo as an example of comedic cross-gender expression and Dewi Sarak Jodag as an example of serious cross-gender expression. The findings indicate three overall approaches to crossing gender boundaries: (1) surpassing femininity naturally expressed by female dancers; (2) mastering and presenting female characters by female impersonators and cross-gender dancers; and (3) breaking down the framework of gender itself. Jil./Vol.13. 2014 INTRODUCTION This article examines the creative stages of Didik Nini Thowok (1954‒), a female impersonator and cross-gender dancer based in Java, Indonesia.1 In addition, it discusses his endeavours of crossing gender boundaries by focusing on the human body's role and Didik's concept of cross-gender dance, which he has advocated since his intensive study of the subject in 2000. For the female impersonator dancer, the term "cross-gender" represents males who primarily perform female roles and explore the expression of stereotypical femininity. Through his artistic activity and unique approach, Didik has continued to express various types of femininity to deviate from stereotypical gender imagery. -

Sementara latar belakang keilmuan kami pun, baik di strata satu dan dua, umumnya adalah terkonsentasi di bidang etnomusikologi dan kajian seni pertunjukan yang juga dengan minat utama musik etnik. Hanya seorang saja yang berlatar belakang akademik antropologi tari. Selain itu, tim kami ini ada dua orang yang berlatar belakang pendidikan strata dua antropologi dan sosiologi. Oleh karenanya latar belakang keilmuan ini, sangat mewarnai apa yang kami tulis dalam buku ini. Adapun materi dalam buku ini memuat tentang konsep apa itu masyarakat, kesenian, dan Indonesia—serta terminologi-terminologi yang berkaitan dengannya seperti: kebudayaan, pranata sosial, dan kelompok sosial. -

Procedures for Reverencing the Tabernacle and the Altar Before, During and After Mass Key Terms: Eucharist: The true presence of Christ in the form of his Body and Blood. During Mass, bread and wine are consecrated to become the Body and Blood of Christ. Whatever remains there are of the Body of Christ may be reserved and kept. Tabernacle: The box-like container in which the Eucharistic Bread may be reserved. Sacristy: The room in the church where the priest and other ministers prepare themselves for worship. Altar: The table upon which the bread and wine are blessed and made holy to become the Eucharist. Sanctuary: Often referred to as the Altar area, the Sanctuary is the proper name of the area which includes the Altar, the Ambo (from where the Scriptures are read and the homily may be given), and the Presider’s Chair. Nave: The area of the church where the majority of worshippers are located. This is where the Pews are. Genuflection: The act of bending one knee to the ground whilst making the sign of the Cross. Soon (maybe even next weekend – August 25-26) , the tabernacle will be re-located to behind the altar. How should I respond to the presence of the reserved Eucharist when it will now be permanently kept in the church sanctuary? Whenever you are in the church, you are in a holy place, walking upon holy ground. Everyone ought to be respectful of Holy Rosary Church as a house of worship and prayer. Respect those who are in silent prayer. -

2012 EPIK Episode 1 Bowing to Tradition Lauren Fitzpatrick (Yeongwol Elementary School) One thing I didn’t realize about myself until I came to Korea: I’m a waver. When somebody says hello to me, my first instinct is to hold up my palm and wave in response. I blame my Midwestern upbringing. When I first met my students, I felt like the Queen, constantly waving back to them as I walked down the hallway. During my first week at Yeongwol Elementary School in rural Gangwon-do, my co- teacher gently pulled me aside. “Lauren teacher,” she said carefully. “Please, do not wave at the students. I think it confuses them.” Now I was confused. What was wrong with waving? My co-teacher explained that things were changing in Korea. The traditional way of greeting an elder is to bow respectfully. But the world is growing smaller; cultural boundaries are not always easily defined. Now, instead of bowing, students often wave - especially to the native teachers. “I worry that we are losing our traditions,” my co-teacher said. “I see my daughter waving to her friends, and many students call the EPIK teachers by their first names. That is not Korean culture. They should always call you Lauren Teacher and bow. If you bow to them, they will remember to do it to you.” To be honest, it felt kind of…weird. I still wasn’t used to bowing to anyone, let alone to children. It felt awkward, as if I was doing it wrong. My biggest fear was inadvertently insulting the principal by not bending enough at the waist or doing something inappropriate with my hands. -

Embodied encounters: Identities in experiential, informal dance, and movement in Central Java Lise Lavelle, Lund University, Sweden Contact: [email protected] Abstract The performance presented in this paper, entitled “Perempuan,” or “Women” in English, is the result of an intercultural meeting between three dancers, two from Java, Indonesia, and one from Denmark (me). Our performance took place in the cultural city of Solo, Central Java, during the international festival, “Ritual Art and Cultural Environment” in 1995. I first met the two Javanese dancers at the Indonesian National Arts Institute in Solo (ISI), where I was carrying out fieldwork for my PhD, centering on the Amerta Movement from Java. Amerta Movement, created by Javanese movement-instructor and performing artist Suprapto Suryodarmo (Prapto) in the 1980s, is a free, non-stylized motion based on everyday movements and on working with awareness and attitudes to life (not an ethnic dance). Amerta Movement has attracted thousands of people, especially Westerners, from all walks of life and of all ages. The practitioners study identity, self-expression, movement-vocabulary, communication, and improvised performance. The research method is practice-based/artistic research. My aim of working with the Javanese dancers for Perempuan was to apply the Amerta improvisational movement to a dance performance with professional dancers, and to exchange our dance skills. It was also based on my wish to get to know Javanese women a little better. Thus, the Perempuan dance project and dance performance became an encounter between non-form Amerta Movement, represented by me, a Westerner; and form, Javanese dance, represented by the two Javanese dancers. -

Rakyat Indonesia masih berjuang dalam mempertahankan kemerdekaan. Tujuan dari penulisan Skripsi ini untuk: (1) mengetahui perjuangan masyarakat dan kondisi Surakarta pasca Kemerdekaan. (2) mengetahui latar belakang Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono XII (3). Mengetahui peran Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono XII dalam mempertahankan Kemerdekaan Metode yang digunakan dalam skripsi ini menggunakan metodelogi yang ditulis oleh Kuntowijoyo. Metode Tersebut meliputi pemilihan topik, pengumpulan sumber, verifikasi, interpretasi dan Historiografi atau penulisan sejarah. Semua metode tersebut sudah dilakukan oleh penulis dalam menyusun skripsi ini. Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh yaitu (1) Perjuangan di Surakarta melibatkan KNI, pemuda, tokoh, bangsawan dan Sri Susuhunan Pakubuwono XII Dan pada akhirnya warga berhasil mengambil alih kekuasaan serta melucuti senjata tentara penjajah. (2) Pakubuwono XII lahir di Surakarta pada Selasa Legi tanggal 14 April 1925, dan diangkat menjadi raja di Keraton Surakarta pada usia yang sangat muda yaitu usia 20 tahun. Beliau juga dikenal dengan raja 3 jaman dengan lama memimpin 48 tahun. Atas pengabdiannya bagi Indonesia, maka Pakubuwana XII diberikan piagam penghargaan dan medali perjuangan angkatan ’45 yang ditetapkan oleh Dewan Harian Nasional Angkatan-45 di Jakarta. Piagam merupakan bukti kesetiaannya kepada Negara Kesatuan RI dan atas nasionalisme yang dalam di masa perjuangan kemerdekaan. (3) Peran PakuBuwono XII antara lain mengorbankan kekayaan keraton yang dimiliki seperti emas dan persenjataan yang sangat banyak, bahkan menyebabkan Keraton sendiri defisit. -

The Palace of Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat is the cultural heart of the city. From generation to generation, the Sultans of Yogyakarta are the traditional governors of the city and responsible for passing on art and culture heritage. The entire royal family is involved in preserving these art forms, and the troupe must perform with a member of the royal family present. The dances from Yogyakarta will be accompanied by gamelan music native to Java. Program Golek Menak Umarmaya Umarmadi Dance Masked Dance Fragment (Wayang Wong) “Klana Sewandana Gandrung” Bedhaya Sang Amurwabhumi About the forms: Golek Menak The golek menak is a contemporary example of the seminal influence exerted by the puppet theater on other Javanese performing arts. This dance was inspired by the stick–puppet theater (wayang golek), popular in the rural area of Yogyakarta. Using the three dimensional rod-puppets, it portrays episodes from a series of stories known as menak. Unlike the high-art wayang kulit (shadow puppets), it is a village entertainment, and it did not flourish at the court. As a dance drama, golek menak focuses on imitating this rod-puppet theater with amazing faithfulness. Human dancers realistically imitate the smallest details of puppet movement, right down to the stylized breathing of the puppets. -

Condee The role of women in Bali must be understood in relationship to tradition, because “tradition” is an important concept for analyzing Balinese culture, social hierarchy, religious expression, and politics. Wayang kulit, or shadow puppetry, is considered an important Balinese tradition because it connects a mythic past to a political present through public, and often religiously significant ritual performance. The dalang, or puppeteer, is the central figure in this performance genre and is revered in Balinese society as a teacher and priest. Until recently, the dalang has always been male, but now women are studying and performing as dalangs. In order to determine what women in these “non-traditional” roles means for gender hierarchy and the status of these arts as “traditional,” I argue that “tradition” must be understood in relation to three different, yet overlapping, fields: the construction of Bali as a “traditional” society, the role of women in Bali as being governed by “tradition,” and the performing arts as both “traditional” and as a conduit for “tradition.” This dissertation is divided into three sections, beginning in chapters two and three, with a general focus on the “tradition” of wayang kulit through an analysis of the objects and practices of performance. -
