About Kendrick Mountain Wilderness

Kendrick Mountain Wilderness was established in 1984, with 6,510 acres. This wilderness encompasses Kendrick Peak, one of the highest peaks in the vast San Francisco located on the in north-central . In 2000 the entire wilderness was involved in a large wildfire. Fire intensities ranged from light to very severe, with more intensely burned areas most evident on the west, north, and east slopes of the peak. Montane mixed conifer forests are present in the unburned and lightly burned areas. Natural recovery processes are occurring in more intensely burned areas, with aspens and other early seral species becoming established in those areas. Unstable volcanic soils have undergone severe erosion on the steeper slopes within burned areas, and will take many more years to stabilize.

Trip Description

Join AWC and Prescott College as we spend a week in the Kendrick Mountain Wilderness learning about wilderness management and restoration activities. This project is open for anyone to join us for any one or all of the 5 days. Work activities will begin at 8 am on Tuesday and Thursday morning, so if you are joining us for the day please arrive early so we don’t leave the base camp area without you. On Wednesday, a staff member from the Sierra Club will be presenting on the Grand Canyon National Monument campaign. This will be a great opportunity to learn about the efforts to protect one of the greatest natural landscapes in the world and how you can help make that happen. Some of the work activities will include: invasive weed surveys, eradication, trail maintenance, and cairn building. Lots of activities for all skill levels and physical abilities.

Wilderness Stewardship Program

We are reserving Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning for opportunities to explore and summit Kendrick Mountain.

All necessary training for will be given at the event. Camping will be at a dispersed backcountry site with water available from containers. AWC will provide a dinner on Wednesday and Thursday night, so let me know in advance if you plan on staying for dinner.
