A Vorwort Unter dem Leitbild „Wissen schaf ft Gesundheit“ ist die Medizinische Fakultät an der Universität des Saarlandes für die Lehre und Forschung in der Medizin und Zahnmedizin verantwortlich. Daneben beteiligt sich die Fakultät in substantiellem Ausmaß an den Studiengängen Human- & Molekularbiologie (Zentrum für Human- & Molekular- biologie) und Bioinformatk (Zentrum für Bioinformatik) und erbringt Lehrexport für die Fakultäten 5, 6 und 8 zur Gestaltung der Studiengänge Pharmazie, Biophysik und Sportwissenschaften. Die Fakultät besteht aus dem Fachbereich „Theoretische Medizin und Biowissenschaften" und dem Fachbereich „Klinische Medizin". Die Professuren des Zentrums für Human- & Molekularbiologie sind dem theoretischen Bereich zugeordnet, die Professuren des Studiengangs "Zahnmedizin" dem klinischen Bereich. Mit 22 Professuren und 3 Juniorprofessuren im Bereich „Theoretische Medizin und Biowissenschaften" und 52 Professuren und 1 Junior-Professur im Bereich "Klinische Medizin" (11 der professuren extern finanziert) hat die Fakultät die Verantwortung für die Ausbildung von 1.939 Studierenden im Studiengang Medizin und 150 Studierenden im Studiengang Zahnmedizin. Des Weiteren trägt sie gemeinsam mit der Fakultät 8 das Zentrum für Human- & Molekularbiologie (ZHMB) und bildet dort 274 Studierende im Studiengang Biologie mit Schwerpunkt Human- & Molekularbiologie aus. Mit den Fakultäten 6 und 8 trägt sie das Zentrum für Bioinformatik (ZBI) und bildet im Studiengang Bioinformatik 195 Studierende aus. Zusätzlich beteiligt sie sich mit den Fakultäten 7 und 8 an den Studiengängen Biophysik und Pharmazie. In Kooperation mit der Technischen Universität Kaiserslautern erfolgt die Durchführung einer gemeinsamen Graduiertenschule im Grenzgebiet von Medizin und Biologie sowie der Master-Studiengänge Toxikologie und Medizinische Strahlenphysik. Die Lehre in der Medizin und Zahnmedizin wird in Kooperation mit dem Universitätsklinikum des Saarlandes erbracht. Mit über 1.300 Betten und circa 50.000 stationären sowie 200.000 ambulanten Patienten zählt das UKS zu einer der größeren Universitätskliniken in Deutschland. Die Kooperation zwischen dem Klinikum und der Fakultät ist über eine Rahmenvereinbarung, basierend auf einer Transparenzrechnung, geregelt. Eine strikte Trennungsrechnung wird nicht angestrebt. Ziel der Lehre ist es, Studierende zu guten Allgemeinmedizinern und Zahnmedizinern auszubilden und sie frühzeitig an die Forschung heranzuführen. Hierzu wird eine strukturierte Doktorandenausbildung orientiert an bestehenden Graduiertenschulen angestrebt. Parallel werden zurzeit studienbegleitende Promotionscurricula in der Inneren Medizin und der Chirurgie erarbeitet. Während des gesamten Studiums wird die Möglichkeit gegeben, Zusatzqualifikationen in Kommunikationsfähigkeiten, Molekularbiologie, Bioinformatik und Medizininformatik zu erwerben. Das bisher hervorragend frequentierte Erasmusprogramm mit Aufnahme von 102 ausländischen Studierenden am Campus Homburg und Vermittlung von 207 Studierenden der UdS an ausländische Universitäten (WS 08/09 bis WS 12/13) wird weiter gestärkt. Eine zusätzliche Internationalisierung wurde mit Ernennung des Centre Hospitalier in Luxemburg zum akademischen Lehrkrankenhaus der Universität des Saarlandes eingeleitet. Zurzeit werden die Möglichkeiten der Einbeziehung des Army Hospitals Landstuhl in den Unterricht der Medizinischen Fakultät geprüft. Das Kompetenzzentrum für Molekulare Medizin (KOMM) zeichnet verantwortlich für Organisation und Koordination von Fort- und Weiterbildungskursen. KOMM hat in den letzten Jahren mit Erfolg die Weiterbildung von Lehrern saarländischer Schulen sowie die Etablierung von Schnupperpraktika in den Bereichen Medizin und Humanbiologie vorangetrieben. Von 2009-2012 wurden 102 Schülerpraktika mit 1856 Schülern durchgeführt. Hier soll die Außenwirksamkeit weiter verstärkt und das Einzugsgebiet vergrößert werden. KOMM fördert weiterhin Firmenausgründungen, stellt Industriekontakte her und unterstützt Erfindungsanmeldungen. Schlussendlich bündelt KOMM die Spitzenforschung an der UdS auf dem Gebiet der Molekularen Medizin mit dem Ziel, den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs anzuwerben, die Öffentlichkeit

    Anthropological Genetics Anthropological genetics is a field that has been in existence since the 1960s and has been growing within medical schools and academic departments, such as anthropology and human biology, ever since. With the recent developments in DNA and computer technologies, the field of anthropological genetics has been redefined. This volume deals with the molecular revolution and how DNA markers can provide insight into the processes of evolution, the mapping of genes for complex phenotypes and the reconstruction of the human diaspora.     MENTAL DISORDER AMONGST PEOPLE OF VIETNAMESE BACKGROUND: PREVALENCE, TRAUMA AND CULTURE Zachary Steel A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Psychiatry Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales Sydney Australia June 2008 ii Abstract The role that culture and trauma plays in shaping mental health outcomes continues to dominate debate in the field of transcultural and post-conflict mental health. The broad aim of this thesis is to investigate key issues relevant to these two factors in relation to the Vietnamese. A meta-analysis of international epidemiological research indicated that countries of North and South East Asia appear to manifest low rates of mental disorder compared to English-speaking countries. A meta-regression analysis of research undertaken specifically with refugee and conflict-affected populations, confirmed a robust association between torture and general trauma and risk to mental disorder. The thesis then examines data from three population-based mental health surveys: 1,161 Vietnamese-Australian residents in the state of New South Wales; 3,039 Vietnamese resident in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam; and 7,961 Australian-born persons drawn from a national survey. All surveys applied the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, with the Vietnamese surveys also applying the Phan Vietnamese Psychiatric Rating Scale, an indigenously-derived measure of mental disorder. The ICD-10 classification system yielded lowest rates amongst Vietnamese in the Mekong Delta, intermediate amongst Vietnamese in NSW; and highest rates amongst the Australian-born population. The Phan Vietnamese Psychiatric Rating Scale added a substantial number of cases in both Vietnamese samples.
