This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport. -

Exhibit Narrative by Brent Abercrombie and Laura Williams Take a drive down memory lane with the Indiana State Library this April 19th through June 30th as we highlight the Indianapolis 500’s greatest races. Terrific Ten: Remarkable Races in Indy 500 History is a free exhibit that examines ten noteworthy years from the race’s history: 1911, 1936, 1946, 1964, 1965, 1977, 1982, 1992, 2006, and 2011. Each year represented something memorable and defined a particular era in racing history. Highlight- ing resources available at the Indiana State Library, as well as a few items on loan from the library’s avid racing fan and collector Ron Rose, the Indianapolis 500 exhibit details the history of the race through old photographs and newspaper articles. Each article depicts a noteworthy event from the 500’s past. Utilizing articles from the Indianapolis Star, available at the State Library, the exhibit begins with the in- augural race held May 30, 1911. This contest saw Ray Harroun, driving his unique Marmon “Wasp,” emerge victorious after six hours and forty-two minutes. The race proved to be wildly popular and ce- ment the city of Indianapolis as a racing destination. As years went by, the Indianapolis 500 brought newfound fame to drivers and created traditions that continue today. Following his third 500 victory in 1936, Louis Meyer began the ceremonial drinking of a bottle of milk after victory. The Indianapolis 500 embarked on a new era in racing beginning in 1946. The 500 race was on a four year hiatus during World War II. There was concern that the race would not start up again or reach the previous height of popularity it had before the war. -

Indy 500 Racing Facts Interested in car racing? Here are a few facts concerning the Indy 500 Race: • The Indianapolis 500 is the original 500-mile auto race, predating any other existing 500 by nearly fifty years. It's not only the most famous race in America, but is the most celebrated around the world. The Indy 500 was first run in 1911. • The distance around one lap of the Indianapolis course is two and one-half miles per lap. • It takes a driver forty seconds to negotiate one full lap at a speed of exactly 225 miles per hour. • Traditionally, thirty-three cars start in the 500. • The Speedway was nicknamed "The Brickyard," because the track was once paved with bricks. • For more than fifty years, the winning driver has pulled into Victory Lane and taken a drink of milk. • The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is not located in Indianapolis. It's in Speedway, Indiana, a community incorporated in 1926, with its own town board, police and fire departments, schools systems, and water company. • An effective Indy pit stop (to pump forty gallons of fuel, change four wheels, and many any minor adjustment) takes about fifteen seconds. • Indy cars do not run on gasoline. Since 1964, they've used methanol, a wood-based alcohol. • If an Indy Car engine were installed in the average riding lawn mower, it could cut a half-acre lawn in about 5.6 seconds. • The winning time at the 1990 Indy was more than four hours faster than the 1911 Indy's winning time of six hours, forty-two minutes.
