Mainly Ulster families – “B” series – Smythe-Wood Newspaper Index Irish Genealogical Research Society Dr P Smythe-Wood’s Irish Newspaper Index Selected families, mainly from Ulster ‘SERIES B’ The late Dr Patrick Smythe-Wood presented a large collection of card indexes to the IGRS Library, reflecting his various interests, - the Irish in Canada, Ulster families, various professions etc. These include abstracts from various Irish Newspapers, including the Belfast Newsletter, which are printed below. Abstracts are included for all papers up to 1864, but excluding any entries in the Belfast Newsletter prior to 1801, as they are fully available online. Dr Smythe-Wood often found entries in several newspapers for the one event, & these will be shown as one entry below. Entries dealing with RIC Officers, Customs & Excise Officers, Coastguards, Prison Officers, & Irish families in Canada will be dealt with in separate files. In most cases, Dr Smythe-Wood has recorded the exact entry, but in some, marked thus *, the entries were adjusted into a database, so should be treated with more caution. There are further large card indexes of Miscellaneous notes on families which are not at present being digitised, but which often deal with the same families treated below. • Scotland's Easter Rising Veterans and the Irish Revolution
Studi irlandesi. A Journal of Irish Studies, n. 9 (2019), pp. 271-302 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.13128/SIJIS-2239-3978-25517 Scotland’s Easter Rising Veterans and the Irish Revolution Thomas Tormey Trinity College, Dublin (<[email protected]>) Abstract: In 1916 members of the Scottish unit of the Irish Volunteers were deeply involved in preparations for the Easter Rising in Dublin and some re- publican activists travelled from the west of Scotland to participate in the rebellion. What follows is a limited prosopography of the revolu- tionary involvement of those members of the Irish Republican Broth- erhood (IRB), the Irish Volunteers, or Cumann na mBan, who were resident in Scotland between 1913 and 1915 and who fought in Ire- land in 1916, or who were prevented from doing so because they were imprisoned. By covering militant activity in both Ireland and Britain, this treatment will argue that Scotland’s Irish republicans were highly integrated with the wider separatist movement in Ireland and beyond, while being very much of the Glasgow, and Europe, of their time. Keywords: Irish Diaspora in Scotland, Irish Republicanism, Irish Revolution, Militant Activism 1. Introduction A part of Scottish life for over 200 years, Scotland’s Irish community has also been part of the global Irish diaspora during that time. As such it has played a major role in the transnational movements associated with the campaigns for various forms of Irish independence. This was vividly illus- trated throughout the Irish revolution as there were Scottish connections to separatist activity in Britain, Ireland and beyond.

  • Conclusion: Bodies in Labor, Bodies As Revolt
CONCLUSION: BODIES IN LABOR, BODIES AS REVOLT As Revolting Bodies, Laboring Subjects demonstrates, the colonized worker of Britain’s colonies in India, Jamaica, and Ireland resisted the transfor- mation into a laboring subject for decades as industrial capital continued its incursion into the British Empire. While this attempted transforma- tion began immediately before the 1850s, resulting in rebellions in those aforementioned colonies during the 1850s and 1860s, it continued well into the twentieth century, which witnessed continued resistance in the form of labor strikes in Ireland during the 1910s, in India during the 1920s, and in Jamaica during the 1930s. The deployment of biopower under industrial capitalism attempted to produce laboring subjects through the management of populations and the disciplining of the indi- vidual body. It gradually did produce more “docile” workers, increasingly adaptable and receptive to modern industrial laboring conditions, as those conditions became normalized and as material benefts (such as a rise in the standard of living) sometimes accrued, even if the complete transfor- mation into laboring subjectivity remains incomplete. Indeed, workers continue to resist their identifcation solely as laboring subjects. Of course, capitalism has been radically transfgured since the nine- teenth century. In the last few decades the increasing fnancialization of the market has led to what has been commonly termed “neoliberalism,” or the return to nineteenth-century economic liberal models of laissez- faire. This has led to the privatization of previously state-owned enter- prises and services, as well as the severe curtailment of state-sponsored © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s) 2017 213 S.

  • The Blue Cap Journal of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers Association Vol
THE BLUE CAP JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL DUBLIN FUSILIERS ASSOCIATION VOL. 22. DECEMBER 2017 Reflections on 1917 Tom Burke Perhaps the best indicator of the British achievements and advances along the Western Front at the end of the 1916 Somme offensive campaign, can be presented through the attacks on the German held villages of Beaumont Hamel by the 1st RDF (86th Brigade, 29th Division) on 1 July 1916 and on Hamel on 13 November 1916 by the 10th Royal Dublin Fusiliers (190th Brigade, 63rd Royal Naval Division, XIII Corps). Both villages lie near each other and were objectives on 1 July 1916. They didn’t fall into British hands until 13 November 1918. Between those dates, in fact up to 30 November 1916, the British suffered 419,654 casualties; the French suffered 194,451, a total of 614,105. The Germans suffered some 445,322 casualties.1 Yet, despite these terrible losses and negligible gains of the German lines, one objective of the Somme campaign, to permanently weaken the German armies on the Western Front, was achieved. When their fighting ended in 1916, Ludendorff concluded that, ‘the German army had been fought to a standstill and was utterly worn out’. On 9 January 1917, at the conference which decided upon unrestricted U-Boat warfare, Hindenburg stated, ‘we must save the men from a second Somme battle.’2 Similar sentiments could be attributed to the British too. The construction of the Hindenburg line beginning in September 1916 was a further indication that the weakened German army along the Somme front could no longer defend their lines.

  • UCC Alumni Who Served in World War
Alumni WWI Heritage Services, Buildings & Estates, UCC Database © UCC This project was begun by the late Michael Holland, University Curator, Heritage Services, Buildings & Estates, UCC. Beginning with the War Record of UCC, published in 1919, which was not completely accurate, he and research assistant Fiona Devoy [now Dr Fiona Devoy McAuliffe] built on this and added further information and details from Dec 2010-Jun 2012. Michael continued the research until Autumn 2018 when his illness prevented further work. This data has now been input into a database and the current printout records the state of research at October 13, 2020. The work continues to check and improve the information about those alumni who served in World War One as well as other historic alumni since 1849. Please note: This printout is a DRAFT. As research continues, records may be amended.
