However, the perception of truth often varies.” In many cases, a kernel of truth can transform into myth as it is passed down from one or more “reliable” sources until the end statement differs so much from the original as to be nearly unrecognizable. Yet, because that fuzzy end statement seems like it could be true, it is sometimes mistaken for fact. The real truth, in contrast, separates fact from hearsay. Along the way, it corrects inaccurate assumptions with objective and verifiable information. The way in which Americans view their country and their faith in the government changed rather drastically between the end of World War II and the end of the Cold War in 1991, when the Soviet Union was officially dissolved. Throughout the duration of this paper, patriotism, as a ideological product of culture, will be looked at through the lens of The Flash and Flash comic book series from 1956 when The Flash reappeared, after a period of censorship and decline in superheroes' popularity post-WWTT, to the beginning of the 1990s. By looking at The Flash specifically, this thesis contributes to more nuanced research and further understanding of culture and the American view of patriotism during the Cold War era, a time of cultural and ideological upheaval. Goforth4 Chaparral, the evergreen sclerophyllous scrub characteristic of the mediterranean- climate region of North America, grows extensively in dense stands from northern California to lat. 30ºN, but thins to a few isolated populations or “sky islands” on the highest mountains in the Central Desert of Baja California (~30º–27.5º N lat.), as well as on the highlands of Isla Cedros. Chaparral also occurs in small outlying populations at lower elevations in the Central Desert, and as understory in tropical thorn scrub and montane Mexican pine-oak woodland, extending nearly to Cabo San Lucas. We present the first detailed maps of chaparral populations in the north central and Mexican pine-oak woodlands in the southern Peninsula, interpreted from Google Earth™ imagery and herbarium databases. We also compare the pres- ent distribution of chaparral with available records from Pleistocene–Early Holo- cene packrat middens. We show that chaparral is unexpectedly widespread in the Central Desert and propose, on the basis of the cistern effect of bedrock surfaces of midden sites and the physical equatorward limit of jet stream precipitation, that climate change since the Last Glacial Maximum was not as pronounced as has been suggested in studies of packrat middens.

    TURN SEQUENCE • Play cards from your hand. • Total up your Power and purchase cards with combined cost less than or equal to that total. • As soon as you buy or gain a card, place it into your discard pile, unless instructed otherwise. END OF TURN • Place all the cards you played and any remaining cards from your hand into your discard pile, and draw a new hand of five cards. • Fill each empty slot in the Line-Up with a card from the top of the main deck. • If the top card of the Super-Villain stack is face down, flip it face up and read aloud the next Super-Villain’s First Appearance—Attack. Do not reshuffle your discard pile just because you have no cards in your deck. Wait until you must draw, discard, or reveal a card from your deck. Then shuffle your discard pile, and it becomes your new deck. The game ends immediately when either of the following two conditions is met: • You are unable to flip up a new Super-Villain on the stack. • You are unable to refill all five slots of the Line-Up.
