IRT consisted of the Manhattan & Bronx Elevated lines (ex Manhattan Rly) and some of the subway lines, many of which replaced the elevated lines. IND consisted mainly of the newer subway lines. BMT: In Central Brooklyn, the original lines were built mainly above streets, most steam operated and electrified in the early 1900's. Most were abandoned in the 1940's/1950's. Only the Broadway and parts of the Fulton Street, Myrtle Avenue & Canarsie El Lines remain, now operated as part of the MTA system. In South Brooklyn, independent steam RRs were originally built at ground level: BBB: Brooklyn & Brighton Beach BBCI: Brooklyn Bath & Coney Island. BRB: Brooklyn & Rockaway Beach NYSB: New York & Sea Beach PPCI: Prospect Park & Coney Island Most of these became part of the BMT system, being electrified and linked to the Central Brooklyn El Lines. Most remained at ground level at this time. On abandonment of the Central Brooklyn Els, the South Brooklyn lines were linked to the newer subway lines. The ground level lines were progressively elevated or lowered into cuttings between 1905 and 1920. In some cases, the old lines at street level continued to be used by the street cars. Some lines operated a mix of El trains and local street cars prior to elevation. Only stops served by El trains and predecessor steam lines are shown in this list, street cars would have stopped at most street intersections. 301.
