It is a pleasure to welcome you to Seattle for the 6th annual International Meeting for Autism Research. IMFAR is rapidly becoming the leading meeting for autism research worldwide. Both the number and quality of abstract submissions are strong, reflecting the outstanding work that is being conducted in the field of autism. As new funding and technologies infuse the field, we are beginning to witness exciting new findings which are bringing new perspectives and hope to the field of autism, and more importantly, to individuals with autism and their families. You will notice this year a strong emphasis on international participation with speakers and participants coming from Africa, Australia, Canada, Europe, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey, Venezuela, and the United States. A symposium featuring new findings on international epidemiology of autism will highlight the efforts being made to track prevalence and understand service delivery systems for persons with autism worldwide. We congratulate our first keynote speaker, Anthony Bailey, for being chosen as the new editor of the first journal sponsored by IMFAR, a historic moment in the society‟s history. Other invited symposia and key note speakers will describe recent findings in the areas of genetics and brain models of autism; these presentations will demonstrate how neuroscience and genetic research can translate into new approaches to early recognition and treatment of autism. Three additional invited symposia will describe novel directions in clinical practice. Two of these focus on different ends of the age spectrum – one on infants and the other on adolescents and adults. The third symposium will illustrate how medical conditions impact individuals with autism, and discuss how to detect and treat such medical conditions, with a goal of improving the quality of lives of individuals with autism and their families. In addition to these exciting invited presentations, numerous posters and oral presentations will be offered. Toward the end of the first two days, we have special presentations, one by Thomas Insel, Director, National Institutes of Mental Health, and the second by Allan Jones, Chief Scientific Officer, Allen Institute for Brain Sciences. Following each of these talks, we invite you to participate in a reception that will offer an opportunity to renew relationships and build new ones. Last, but not least, the ceremony announcing the Dissertation Award, Young Investigator Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award will be held on Saturday afternoon. Please come congratulate Uta Frith on her amazing lifetime contributions to the field. We wish to thank the many contributors who made IMFAR 2007 possible. We would like to express our gratitude to the INSAR Board and the Scientific Program Committee for their hard work. Thank You. 1 Vaccine-Related Science: Autism and SIDS No Causal Association Found Autism Literature Reviews: Autism and Vaccines 1. Measles, Mumps, Rubella Vaccination and Autism: A Nationwide Cohort Study PDF available here Annals of Internal Medicine March 2019 The study strongly supports that MMR vaccination does not increase the risk for autism, does not trigger autism in susceptible children, and is not associated with clustering of autism cases after vaccination. It adds to previous studies through significant additional statistical power and by addressing hypotheses of susceptible subgroups and clustering of cases. 2. Autism Occurrence by MMR Vaccine Status Among US Children With Older Siblings With and Without Autism http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=2275444 The Journal of the American Medical Association April 2015 In this large sample of privately insured children with older siblings, receipt of the MMR vaccine was not associated with increased risk of ASD, regardless of whether older siblings had ASD. These findings indicate no harmful association between MMR vaccine receipt and ASD even among children already at higher risk for ASD.

PRACTICE PARAMETER FOR THE ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER ABSTRACT Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by patterns of delay and deviance in the development of social, communicative, and cognitive skills which arise in the first years of life. Although frequently associated with intellectual disability, this condition is distinctive in terms of its course, impact, and treatment. ASD has a wide range of syndrome expression and its management presents particular challenges for clinicians. Individuals with an ASD can present for clinical care at any point in development. The multiple developmental and behavioral problems associated with this condition necessitate multidisciplinary care, coordination of services, and advocacy for individuals and their families. Early, sustained intervention and the use of multiple treatment modalities are indicated. Dazu unter- scheidet er drei verschiedene epistemische Zugänge zum Autismus: ein exter- nes Wissen der dritten Person, das über Verhaltensbeobachtungen, Testver- fahren und Elterninterviews gewonnen wird; ein stärker praktisches Wissen der zweiten Person, das in der andauernden, alltäglichen Interaktion bei El- tern und Betreuer*innen entsteht, und schließlich das introspektive Wissen der ersten Person, d.h. der Autist*innen selbst. Autism-based applied behavior therapies are highly controversial evidence-based autism interventions that have become the standard of care, and the only guaranteed-funded services, for autistic people in this province. These therapies are provided by teachers in public autism classrooms, by parents in the home, and by personal support workers in group homes with autistic residents. The lives of many autistic people in this province, whether at school, in the home, or the community, are structured through completing behaviour therapy activities. The growing voices that resist and proliferate applied behaviour therapies, highlight the importance of critical scholarly attention to these therapies. This dissertation is situated within the fields of science studies, medical anthropology, and critical autism studies, and focuses on the experiences and practices of providers. Learning about what providers do, and how they make sense of what they do, helps to understand the professional culture in which they work, and the complex forces of power that govern both their activities and the everyday lives of autistic people in this province.

    Why We Oppose Autism Speaks Autism Speaks, despite its name, does not speak for autistic people. When polled, 98% of autistic adults oppose Autism Speaks –and there is a massive global movement by autistic people and allies to stop Autism Speaks. In fact, regardless of the many differences among autistic advocates about politics and advocacy, there is one view we pretty much ALL agree on: that Autism Speaks is a hate group. Some reasons: Autism Speaks has allocated hundreds of millions of dollars towards “eugenics” projects that may seek to prevent autistic people from being born. • Autism Speaks is a co-founder of the MSSNG project, a massive, far-reaching project to make a global database of 10,000+ autistic children’s DNA available for use by researchers throughout the world who can fill out a pop-up menu on their website to access it. • The DNA is extracted without the children’s permission. • It is done with the purpose of identifying “autism genes” that will then be used in prenatal testing. • If common genes are identified through this research, people will do prenatal testing and terminate pregnancies if they think there are “signs of autism”. • This project is active in Canada. Autism Speaks Canada has earmarked hundreds of thousands of dollars to its own arm of the project. A group of geneticists in Toronto has also been involved in collecting data for the database. • One of the project’s co-founders, Dr. James Watson, was fired from Cold Spring Harbour Laboratory for his racist remarks about African Americans, intelligence and using eugenics to find “a cure for stupid”.

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This dissertation brings disability studies and postcolonial studies into dialogue with discourse surrounding risk in the environmental humanities. The central question that it investigates is how critics can reframe and reinterpret existing threat registers to accept and celebrate disability and embodied difference without passively accepting the social policies that produce disabling conditions. It examines the literary and rhetorical strategies of contemporary cultural works that one, promote a disability politics that aims for greater recognition of how our environmental surroundings affect human health and ability, but also two, put forward a disability politics that objects to devaluing disabled bodies by stigmatizing them as unnatural. Some of the major works under discussion in this dissertation include Marie Clements’s Burning Vision (2003), Indra Sinha’s Animal’s People (2007), Gerardine Wurzburg’s Wretches & Jabberers (2010) and Corinne Duyvis’s On the Edge of Gone (2016). The first section of this dissertation focuses on disability, illness, industry, and environmental health to consider how critics can discuss disability and environmental health in conjunction without returning to a medical model in which the term ‘disability’ often designates how closely bodies visibly conform or deviate from definitions of the normal body.

    However, even autistic individuals who are profoundly disabled eventually gain the ability to communicate effectively, and to learn, and to reason about their behaviour and about effective ways to exercise control over their environment, their unique individual aspects of autism that go beyond the physiology of autism and the source of the profound intrinsic disabilities will come to light. These aspects of autism involve how they think, how they feel, how they express their sensory preferences and aesthetic sensibilities, and how they experience the world around them. Those aspects of individuality must be accorded the same degree of respect and the same validity of meaning as they would be in a non autistic individual rather than be written off, as they all too often are, as the meaningless products of a monolithically bad affliction." Based on these extremes -- the disabling factors and atypical individuality, Phil says, they are more so disabling because society devalues the atypical aspects and fails to accommodate the disabling ones. That my friends, is what we are working towards -- a place where the group we seek to "help," we listen to. We do not get offended when we are corrected by the group. We are the parents. We have a duty to listen because one day, our children may be the same people correcting others tomorrow.
