[email protected]> «IN SÌ PERIGLIOSO ARINGO»: GIOVANNI GHINASSI TRADUCE L’ ELEGY DI THOMAS GRAY ABSTRACT In this study, Andrea Fabbri discusses a lesser-known but important translation of the Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard by 19 th -century Italian scholar Giovanni Ghinassi. It was written in terza rima , a sequence of tercets linked by end-rhymes patterned aba, bcb, cdc, ded, etc. (also used by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy ), and consists of 190 lines, while Gray wrote his poem in 32 quatrains, a total of 128 lines. Thus, two tercets in the translation correspond to a quatrain of the Elegy , granting Ghinassi enough room to express himself in Italian, which by its nature is less concise than English. The translation is almost as rich as the original in sound patterns (alliteration, rhyme, assonance, etc.) and very close to it content- wise, thanks to Ghinassi’s good knowledge of written English. It also has frequent references (quotations or reminiscences) to the Italian poetic tradition, especially Dante and Tasso. These qualities make it a better achievement than the well-known translations by Cesarotti and Torelli, which Ghinassi knew and criticized severely, the former for resorting to dull unrhymed verse, the latter for being in quatrains, a “Procrustean bed” for Italian translators of English poetry. 1.
