233Il mondo nuovo L’élite veneta fra rivoluzione e restaurazione (1797-1815) Valentina Dal Cin 5 Il potere informale delle relazioni Sommario 5.1 Reti massoniche. – 5.1.1 Bernardino Renier: un ‘rompiscatole’ a Parigi. – 5.1.2 Una merce richiesta: le commendatizie di Giuseppe Rangoni. – 5.2 L’ascesa di Giovanni Scopoli: Verona, Milano e l’Europa. – 5.2.1 Progressione di carriera e reti di relazioni. – 5.2.2 Il network internazionale. – 5.2.3 Un capitale sociale di lungo periodo. 5.1 Reti massoniche Negli ultimi anni di vita della Repubblica i governanti veneziani avevano temuto che le logge massoniche potessero rivelarsi uno strumento di diffu- sione delle pericolose «massime francesi».1 Dopo la stagione democratica tali sospetti furono condivisi anche dal governo austriaco, tanto che il 23 aprile 1801 l’imperatore Francesco II decretò l’abolizione di ogni società segreta nell’intero territorio della monarchia.2 Con l’avvento del Regno d’Italia, ormai conclusasi l’esperienza della vice-presidenza di Francesco Melzi, che non amava le società segrete, la rete massonica italiana poté ricostituirsi attraverso nuove strutture di co- ordinamento, a seguito di un’iniziativa pianificata dal centro dell’Impero.3 Dopo la creazione nel 1804 del Grande Oriente presso la divisione dell’ar- mata d’Italia stabilita nel Regno di Napoli, guidato dal generale Giuseppe Lechi, il 20 giugno 1805 a Milano si insediò una loggia generale chiamata Grand’Oriente d’Italia con a capo lo stesso viceré Eugenio, mentre l’anno dopo Giuseppe Bonaparte fu posto alla testa del Grande Oriente di Napoli.4 Il Grand’Oriente d’Italia sotto la sua giurisdizione poteva contare almeno una ventina di logge di rito scozzese, fra cui La Pace di Padova, La Reale 1 Sulla massoneria settecentesca cf. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis considers the transposition from page to stage of some of Shakespeare’s plays in Italy. In particular it concentrates on different approaches to Shakespeare’s texts and different ways to transform them into theatrical action. The first chapter has an introductory function, and lays the groundwork for subsequent discussion. It illustrates the encounter between the work of the English playwright and the Italian people through an overall view of the reception of Shakespeare in Italy from the first mention of his name in 1667 to Francesco De Sanctis’s critical writings in the mid- nineteenth century. The following chapters discuss how Shakespeare’s plays have been adapted for the stage by some prominent Italian actors and directors. The focus is on three periods of the history of Italian theatre. The Great Actors of the mid-nineteenth century offered stagings of Shakespeare’s plays that focused on the main character, thus depriving them of anything that did not enhance the role of the lead actor. The generation of the directors, that flourished in Italy in the mid-twentieth century, advocated a philological reading of the playtexts, after they had been so severely altered by the generation of the actors. -

Her life was full of vivid contrasts; a life which, even apart from its stage aspects, was more than ordinarily full of colour. Her autobiography, I offer rendered into English to the American public, primarily to gratify her own desire expressed in one of her letters addressed to Mr. L. D. Transformations in landscape circa 1800. Landscapes of the bard, of the promeneur solitaire, & of the pater familias John Dixon Hunt 1. Around the year 1800 the world of European landscape taste was at an excit- ing moment of renewal and change; but it also found itself confronted with somewhat conflicting opportunities, particularly as a taste for wider (and often wilder) landscapes manifested itself in landscape architectural designs. The swift growth of naturalistic or irregular gardening during the later 18th century had effectively challenged and in many places eclipsed the old, autocratic and aris- tocratic forms of geometry and architectural garden layouts. Yet the umbrella of the «giardino inglese» sheltered a great variety of forms and effects, assump- tions and receptions. The term was challenged nowhere more energetically than in Italy, where – as elsewhere in Europe – the ‘English’ landscape garden was re- quired to adapt itself to different topographical and cultural conditions. In its accommodation and reworking in what is now northern Italy, a group of garden- ists (Horace Walpole’s useful coinage), among whom were Melchiorre Cesarotti, Luigi Mabil, Ippolito Pindemonte, Vincenzo Malacarne, and Ercole Silva, led dis- cussions as to the scope and characters of the new garden mode, its relationship to the larger landscapes beyond the garden, and its adaptation for new public gardens like those of Venice. The new landscaping that came into prominence during the 18th century gen- erally premised its designs on an appeal to the ‘natural’; yet this ‘nature’ consisted of a variety of landscape experiences outside the circuit of an estate, or park or transformations in landscape circa 1800. -

ASPETTI STORICO-GIURIDICI: IL TEMA DELLA SEPOLTURA NEL CORSO DEI SECOLI. L’obiettivo del mio lavoro è di riordinare sotto un denominatore comune la poesia sepolcrale di alcune delle moderne letterature, comprendendovi le parti del genere detto contemplativo, che furono anche ispirate dai cimiteri. Tale poesia sarebbe da studiare nelle letterature: inglese, francese, tedesca, italiana e spagnola, dove fu manifestazione di un pensiero già adulto e di profonda cultura. Gioverebbe intendere tutte le più belle voci, che sono come l’eco della musa che siede sui sepolcri, e ciascuna delle quali è interprete di un’alta coscienza personale, e talvolta anche della coscienza nazionale. Nei paesi dove la fede religiosa fu rinnovata dalla Riforma, la poesia sepolcrale è più abbondante e più fervida che in quelli in cui languì la fede antica. Inghilterra, Francia, Italia ma anche Spagna dove, seppur in modo diverso, la poesia sepolcrale ebbe un forte riscontro, sono i paesi che, con le rispettive letterature, prenderò in esame per sviluppare il mio lavoro di ricerca.
