PARISH REGISTERS

Holy Baptism Apr 2nd in St Andrew’s, Niamh Elizabeth Coleman, daughter of Brad and Tanya Coleman, 6 Gartan Court, Swords

Holly Ella Ivers, daughter of Brian Ivers and Pearl Griffin, 14 Drynam Drive, Swords

Apr 8th, in St Andrew’s, Eoin Michael Gleeson, son of Tadgh and Petrina Gleeson, 38 Torcaill, Portmarnock

We welcome these new members into Christ’s family of love. Please remember them, their parents and godparents in your prayers

Holy Matrimony Apr 15th, in St Doulagh’s, Julie-Anne Alexandra Moody and David Robert Sweeney, both of 117 Granby Road, Eltham, London SE9.

Julie-Anne returned home from London for her wedding which was conducted by Canon Richard Bertram, who had married her parents many years before. He was assisted by the Rector. The address was given by David Rea, lay reader and Julie- Anne’s uncle. The weather was glorious and the cold weather which seemed to drag on this year finally decided to warm up. Perhaps it was an omen! We wish Julie-Anne and David a long and happy married life together as they return to set up home in London.

Christian Burial Apr 17th, in St Andrew’s Churchyard, after service in St Andrew’s Church, Linda Elizabeth Brown, 18 Ardnamara Crescent. Malahide

After a long illness Linda Brown died peacefully in the early hours of Good Friday, in the presence of her family. During the past few years she maintained her characteristic cheerfulness, based on a deep personal faith which was an inspiration to us all. She was always appreciative of everything done for her and never lost her sense of humour in the face of many a set back. Linda was a great worker for the parish. She had a great gift for flower arranging and art, and for many years looked after the Flower Rota in St Andrew’s. She was always supporting and encouraging Brian, not least in his acting as co-ordinator of our parish development programme. Sadly she will not see the completion of the work at St Andrew’s but by a strange co-incidence her funeral took place the day before the church was to be closed for worship as part of the development programme! After a service which included some of her favourite hymns, at which the address was given by Canon Jack Black, a long-standing family friend, her remains were laid to rest in St Andrew’s churchyard.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to Brian and their children Linda (London), Karen (), Vanessa (Belfast), and Clodagh (New York), her sister Sandra (Tullamore), her brothers Dermot () and Henry (Geashill), and to all her family and friends in the loss of one who was deeply loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Sympathy We offer our sympathy to Nigel Motyer, Seabury, on the recent death of his father.

Congratulations to Lynne Harley, Downs, on her engagement to Liam Mangan.

LENT HOLY WEEK & EASTER The ecumenical Wednesday evening meetings held during Lent proved to be a great success. Attendances were well up on previous years, and peaking at over 70 at Seapark Convent to hear Canon Cecil Hyland talk about ‘Prayer & Meditation’. They led on to the now traditional ecumenical observance of Holy Week in St Andrew’s which were also well attended, and we thank our preachers for the thoughtful addresses as we turned our thoughts towards Calvary.

Easter Day dawned bright (for once) and mild, which may have encouraged the greatly increased turnout at all services, even at 6am when the sun made its appearance as we left St Doulagh’s Church. We thank Rev Brian Mason who preached at the 10am and 11.30 services, and to all who helped in many ways with readings and prayers and music, and the provision of suitable sweets for the children as they left Church and candles for the daybreak service. Thanks are also due to Norma Sherwood and her team for the decoration of St Andrew’s, and to the Moody family from Seamount, for ensuring that St Doulagh’s was beautifully decorated after Julie-Anne’s wedding the previous afternoon.

Remember Alzheimer’s TEA DAY Thursday 4TH MAY 10.30. - 12.30. Please join us in The Rectory, Church Road, Malahide to support this worthy cause. All donations will be gratefully received, but it is suggested €2 for tea/coffee and €2 for raffle tickets which will be sold on the day. I look forward to seeing you. Best Wishes, Susan Gamble.

If you can give of your time on the day, baking or giving donations to the stalls, your support will be greatly appreciated. Please tell your neighbours and friends to come along with you and enjoy a very happy few hours.

ASCENSION DAY Because it always falls on a Thursday, this is one of the neglected major festivals of the Christian Year. This year, as the Rector is away, and also because of the uncertainty surrounding the mid-week use of St Andrew’s it will be marked by a single celebration of Holy Communion in St Doulagh’s at 10.00 am and there will not be a service in St Andrew’s.

ST DOULAGH'S OPEN-AIR SERVICE This will be held at 3.00 pm on Sunday 28th May in the field beside the Church. Music will be provided by 1st Co Boys’ Brigade Brass Band and the Portmarnock Gospel Choir. The preacher will be Ven Gordon Linney, formerly Archdeacon of Dublin and very well known in the wider community for his courageous comments on social and political issues during his time as Archbishop, and for his involvement with the development of Hospital. Everyone is welcome. Guided tours of the Church and site will be available after the service,

Please make this service known to friends and neighbours and give it your own personal support.

Further information from Victor Black, 087-6711547, or 01-8475217.

RECTOR'S HOLIDAYS The Rector will be away from May 15th to 31st inclusive. During this period, all emergency calls should be made to Rev Ken Sherwood from 18th to 31st. Canon Cecil Hyland, former Rector of , will provide cover from 14th to 17th and may be contacted at 810 6884.

CHILDRENS’ CHURCH Once St Marnock’s Chapel is in use, we intend to use it as a children’s facility over the summer months when the KwC Club is not in operation. For part of the service, there will be worship and activities suitable for the younger age group. However, we will need helpers and offers of assistance should be made to the Rector or Rev Ken Sherwood. It is hoped to begin on Sunday 11th June, the day after the Service of consecration. MIRROR DISTRIBUTION We rely on volunteers to distribute the Mirror each month. Recent growth has meant the increase in some areas on then edge of the parish and thanks are due to Ken Sherwood ( village) and Alicia Lieberman (Drynam) for agreeing to cover their areas as many of the magazines in these areas outside the parish boundaries had formerly been posted at considerable expense.

BISHOP’S APPEAL FUND FOR WORLD DEVELOPMENT You should all have received a copy of the Bishops’ Appeal Fund annual report and an envelope. The Report gives details of all the work undertaken in the name of the in promoting development work abroad. All the money subscribed in used: no costs are deducted and projects assisted by Bishop’s Appeal are carefully monitored to ensure that funds do not find their way into the wrong hands as can happen so easily!

Please give as generously: envelopes may be placed on the collection plate at services or given to the Rector, to Nigel Warburton or to Lynsey Case-O’Neill, our parish administrator.

VISIT TO EGYPT Would you like to visit Egypt? Now is your opportunity! The dates: approx. 8th to 16th February 2007. The purpose: To visit our parish supported project REFUGE EGYPT The cost: Air fare + about €300-400 While there will be an opportunity to visit the Pyramids, you may arrange time afterwards to cruise the Nile or do all the other touristy things one does in Egypt! REFUGE EGYPT have told us that it is very important that we are seen to be there. Many of the refugees they help feel very isolated and friendless and will be encouraged by visitors from abroad: hopefully we in our turn will be encouraged by seeing at first hand what is being done in our name. Why February? Because the weather is at its coolest! We will not be used to the intense summer heat of Cairo: February temperatures in Cairo will generally be about 20oC. It is intended that we will travel with a similar group from Killinchy parish, Co Down. The trip will be co-ordinated by CMS and will involve preparation and training (what to avoid saying, what to say etc, the problems you may encounter in Egypt, etc). Therefore if you are interested in going, please tell the clergy now so that you can be included Work is also going ahead on forming a link with Killinchy and this will be launched with pulpit exchanges in September/October.

Where is Killinchy?

It is a rural area along the Western shores of Strangford Lough which is increasingly becoming a residential area for Belfast professionals because of the facilities, such as sailing, which it offers. May 2006 Parish Mirror Page 11

UNEXPECTED VISITORS On Palm Sunday evening, the service was attended by the Dean of Cairo, Rev Jim Doust and his wife, Elaine, who happened to be passing the area while on holidays in Ireland. Jim is a ‘retired’ Australian Air Force chaplain, who is being temporarily seconded to Cairo for a year, having been Provost for five years in the 1990s. They had not realised our link with the Cathedral, but we were simply looking for a place to worship, having been travelling during the morning and finding all the churches they passed were closed! They got rather a surprise at attending a service in which we prayed for the work of their Cathedral and enjoyed an interesting conversation afterwards in the Rectory. It’s a small world, and another contact with Cairo!

WHO NEEDS FORGIVENESS? Who needs forgiveness? Not me. I'm the injured party in all this. I'm the victim here! It's them that need forgiveness! And they needn't look to me for it… at least not until I've seen signs of them repenting. They haven't even said sorry, never mind anything else. They need to get down on their knees before God and ask him to forgive them! There's no point asking me, I can't forgive sins. And I won't forgive them. Not yet anyway.

Who needs forgiveness? Not me. I'll admit, I did some dreadful things in the past, but they were dreadful times. Desperate situations demand desperate actions. So don't offer me your forgiveness. Thanks, but no thanks; I've no need of it. You think you're better than me!? You think that what I did is wrong!? Fine. But take a good look at yourself… at you and your like. Make sure you're really standing on the moral high ground before you look down on me and mine…

In recent years, a lot has been recorded about what has happened in the past in Northern Ireland. And that is important. But where do we go from here? What do we do with all those memories? We have been reluctant to mention forgiveness in the whole process - including within the church. We have been wary of re-victimising victims by imposing on them the expectation of glib forgiveness. Some have even said that we have no right to forgive without repentance. But if Christianity is not about forgiveness, what is it about? It certainly was a hobbyhorse of Jesus.

Who needs forgiveness? The pious answer is, of course, that we all do. We have all done things wrong; we are all in need of God's forgiveness. And we have all offended other people in one way or another, and need their forgiveness. We may not feel that we need it, but that does not negate the need. We may not feel that we need exercise or five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, but the plain fact is, we do, whether we think so or not.

There is a lot of talk in nutritional terms about superfoods - foods that are not only nutritious but also help to mop up some of the dangerous toxins that float around our bodies. Forgiveness is a spiritual superfood, essential for our personal and societal health: helping to break down deep resentment; create the possibility of restored relationships; reorientate our perspective from hurts in the past to the potential of the Page 12 Parish Mirror February 2002 future.

That isn't all that we need: we also need a healthy dose of repentance. And, although the two are inter-related, one doesn't need to come before the other. They reinforce each other - like good nutrition and exercise. Neither is a magic wand. Forgiveness and repentance are not single acts, or forms of words; they are inter-related, ongoing processes that will probably never be completed this side of the grave. Just like eating and exercise.

It's easy to see the failure of others, be it the deficiencies in their physical condition or their need for forgiveness and repentance. But we are not responsible for anyone else. We need to take control of our own health - physical, emotional and spiritual. And part of that is dealing with our need to repent, to be forgiven and to forgive.

No point in waiting for the time to be right, for someone else to go first…

Who needs forgiveness? We all do. As individuals and as a society it is essential for our spiritual fitness and, as such, we must do all we can to foster a culture of meaningful forgiveness. As Desmond Tutu said in the title of his book, there is 'No Future Without Forgiveness'. At least, no healthy future… David Campton (Centre for Contemporary Christianity)

HOLY SPIRIT: VERSES FOR PENTECOST The Spirit is a lively wind - The Spirit is a lively jester - breathtaking for those who breathe embarrassing, with outrageous gesture, the stale air of mechanical worship; stiff respectability; but for sails unfurled tumbling over dignity and wings of faith spread wide in multi-coloured guises, he comes as driving energy, impudently prodding uncontrollably bracing. deadly faces He only destroys cobwebs into joy and laughter. and dead branches. He only destroys our pomp and vanity. The Spirit is a lively power - not available to bolster up our empires, The Spirit is a lively bee - but unpredictably exploding buzzing elusively in surprising places, through our solemnities. strengthening weak knees He’s not pinned down by resolutions, and faint hearts, but flies in dizzy revolutions and giving secret growth round our cultivated plots. to mysterious fruit. Sweet gifts he brings He only destroys the rotten enemies of his own making; of our souls. and when he stings, his heart is breaking . BUILDING FOR GENERATIONS COMMITTEE

Onwards and Upwards The building of Saint Marnock’s Chapel is going very well as any parishioner who has visited saint Andrew’s can attest. The roof is now on, and it’s full steam ahead for the consecration on 10th June.

Readers will have seen (we hope) the invitation to the consecration on the front cover of this edition of the Mirror. We look forward to welcoming both Archbishop Neill and Archbishop Eames to the United Parishes on 10th June and hope that as many parishioners as possible can attend this very important and happy ceremony.

The Select Vestry and the Building For Generations Committee would like to stress that the ongoing acknowledgement of those parishioners who have contributed to this fund is simply a way of publicly saying 'Thank You' to all who have contributed to the appeal since it was first launched in October last year.

Youth Officer In last month’s Mirror we reported on the decision of the Select Vestry to go ahead with the recruitment of a Youth Officer for the Parish. There’s a little bit of work to do to put this into effect. We are proceeding to set up meetings with Diocesan organisations to commence the recruitment process. Watch out for news of this exciting development in the next issue of the Mirror.

FRIENDS OF ST DOULAGH'S. Are you interested in becoming a Tour Guide of St Doulaghs' Church? You would be required to show visitors around during the summer, on one (or possibly) two Sunday afternoons, working with a team, from 3pm to 5pm.

If you think you would like to give it a try, please contact the undersigned at 01- 8475217, or 087- 6711547 for details, or why not come along to St Doulaghs' between 3pm - 5pm on Sunday 14th May, when we will be having a training session for guides, and to bring all guides up to date on what is happening regarding the ongoing work in the church, both now, and in the future. Tesco & Independent Tokens: It’s that time of year once again when we collect these tokens in conjunction with projects we are doing in the school. We would appreciate any donations of these also.

Supervalu Tokens: Thank you to all who contributed these.

Gaeltacht Visit: Fifth and Sixth Classes will be making their annual trip to the Donegal Gaeltacht from 15th – 19th May. We thank Ms. Lesley McElhinney and Ms. Olga Hoffman for accompanying the classes.

Farewell & Welcome: It is with regret I report that Ms. Jennifer Whittle, our Sixth Class teacher, will be moving to St. John’s No. 2 School, Monasterevin, Co. Kildare on the 5th May to be nearer home. We shall all miss Jennifer very much and we thank her for her excellent work and commitment to the school over the past five years. St. Andrew’s and the children have benefitted so much by her being here. We wish Jennifer every happiness in her new school and thank her for all she has given us.

I am pleased to report however that the Board of Management has just appointed Ms. Amy Hall, a past pupil of the school to replace Ms. Whittle. She will commence teaching Sixth Class on Monday 8th May. I trust that Amy will be happy to be with us again in a different capacity and wish her many happy days in St. Andrew’s. F.T. ST ANDREW’S PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION

Upcoming Event SAPA is organising a ‘Black & White’ (casual dress) themed social night on Friday 19th May at 8pm in the Malahide Rugby Club, Seabury. There will be a fork supper with music and dancing to late!

This is a social evening and not a fundraiser. Tickets cost just €20 each and are available from the School Office or from Lesley McCabe, Mobile No. 086 108 0471.

Future Plans SAPA is planning to issue a Malahide Calendar for 2007 to include scenes of Malahide in bygone years and we need your help.

We need photographs of Malahide as it was in the 50’s, 60’s 70’s & 80’s or before - it may be an aerial view of an area, a black & white photo of a streetscape, St James’s Terrace, New Street before the shopping mall, the old cinema, the cottages opposite the green, the Diamond before traffic lights, the Grand Hotel, the Marina before it was……the list goes on! …….so please check with relatives, friends and neighbours.

We undertake to return all photographs and will acknowledge the source of the published photographs. You can either submit your photos to the School Office, marking the envelope Calendar 2007 or contact Nigel Dawkins on 086 2502 306 / 845 0529. Nigel Dawkins May 2006 Parish Mirror Page 23

ST ANDREW'S TABLE TENNIS CLUB 2005/2006 SEASON

JUNIOR CLUB St Andrew's Junior Table Tennis Club is doing well and we had very good attendances each Monday night since last September, with an average of 15 boys and girls each evening, playing on 4 tables. Juniors must have reached their 8th birthday in order to join the Junior Club.

Many thanks to all parents for coming down to supervise when requested. We could not function without you, so your attendance is much appreciated. This is more than ever needed in order to meet the standard of supervision demanded by B.F.G. Committee, in addition to regulations as set out in Safeguarding Trust as published by Church of Ireland Code of Good Practice.

We held a number of Mini Tournaments during the season, together with Christmas Tournament with mince pies supper following.

We were invited to play a friendly match in Castleknock just before end of season and all who travelled from Malahide were delighted with their evening. Castleknock have a very healthy youth/junior table tennis group who share Saturday nights, thanks to the hard work and support from parents. We hope to invite the young people and their parents from Castleknock to Malahide early next season for a return friendly match.

End of Season Tournament was held on Monday 3rd April 2006. We divided juniors into 4 groups. We were pleased to see how much each junior had improved since the beginning of the season. The parents joined the juniors to play a few games of doubles before supper.

Tournament results were as follows: May 2006 Parish Mirror Page 25

Finally, Mervyn and Arthur would like to say a very sincere "Thank You" to juniors and their parents for their kindness shown to us on final night with unexpected presentations. SENIOR CLUB Last October, we held our annual tournament, which was well supported by other league clubs and by many of our regular friends. We had lots of good play and this was followed by a super supper. We held a raffle in order to support our funds and meet increased fees to St Andrews Parish Centre for use of the large hall. Unfortunately we were unable to field a First Division team this year to enable Philip Caswell to play for us in the League/Cup competitions. We did however enter Three Teams in the United Churches Table Tennis League. Team 1: (Willie Worrell, Bob Turner and Pat Young) who played in Division 2. Team 2: (Peter Williams, Mervyn Robinson, Dougie Keegan plus Derek Reid) were runners up to Castleknock 1 in Division 3 of the League, and Peter Williams was runner up in the singles competition. Team 3: (Brian Saville, Arthur Thompson, Stuart Worrell, William Adams plus Alan Johns) were runners up to Castleknock 2 in Division 4 of the Cup. Philip Caswell brought success to our club by winning the Men's Singles Champion Cup in the Annual Championships held in Irish Wheelchair Association, Clontarf. He beat Tom Mitchell in the final after 5 very exciting games and thus retained the Cup, which he won for the first time last season. Finally this is a very special year for the longest serving member of our club as he celebrates his 80th birthday. To mark this occasion and to say a very sincere "thank you" to Bob Turner for his many years of dedication to our club and to the game of table tennis, a small presentation was made to him on final night as he prepares to travel to Germany and take part in a Veteran's International Table Tennis Competition there. Safe journey to Mrs. Turner and Bob and enjoy your trip. May you both enjoy good health and happiness for the future. Mervyn Robinson Peter Williams Brian Saville Arthur Thompson (Chairman) (Hon.
