Results Page 2011 Ultimate Wine Challenge Results ULTIMATE WINE CHALLENGE 2011 May 26, 2011 ASTOR CENTER, NEW YORK CITY All wines were evaluated by a select group of judges under ideal tasting conditions, at the proper service temperature, in manageable flights of no more than eight wines; and in high-quality glassware specific for wine type and varietal. Wines were poured into numbered glasses in a separate room, served blind in small flights based upon wine type, origin, varietal and price, and evaluated and scored by panels of judges who used a unique variation of the 100-point scale. Products that scored 90 points or higher were then evaluated blind once again, in newly-created groupings by a different panel of judges. Top scoring products were then reviewed again to determine a select group of finalists with the categorys highest-scorer being awarded a Chairmans Trophy accolade. For 2011, there are 17 Chairmans Trophies awarded, representing the best of the best; Finalists in each section are also identified. In addition to the score, wines are distinguished with the following Accolades, as a guide to consumers: 95-100 Extraordinary, Ultimate Recommendation 90-94 Excellent, Highly Recommended 85-89 Very Good, Strong Recommendation 80-84 Good, Recommended A note on the icons: Tasting Note: tasting notes for Chairman's Trophy winners and Finalists have been provided by Judging Chairman, F. Paul Pacult and Assistant Judging Chairman, Sean Ludford based upon their and the judges' impressions. Roll over icon to view.     Pinot Noir is an Expensive Mistress Volume 8, Issue 4 October 28, 2009 WesMar: Aromas that Dance in the Glass WesMar Winery is a modest garagiste throwback winery located in the former Vacu-Dry apple processing facility on Gravenstein Highway in Sebastopol. There is no fancy sign to mark the winery, just some grape bins outside with the name “WesMar” stenciled on them, and a few halved stainless steel milk shipping containers used for fermentations that are left over from Williams Selyem winery when it was owned by Burt Williams and Ed Selyem. The Williams Selyem imprint is evident in the winery’s business model and the wines are déjà vu for lovers of the Williams Selyem Pinot Noirs of the early 1990s. This is not surprising, for owner Denise Mary Selyem is the daughter of Ed Selyem, and both her and her partner and spouse Kirk Wesley Hubbard, worked at Williams Selyem for several years before the winery was sold in 1997. The owners are an unpretentious couple who shun the limelight. As a result, WesMar is primarily known to hardcore Pinot Geeks. They do not submit their wines for comparative judging, preferring to allow the wines to speak for themselves. It took nine vintages before they ventured out into the Pinot Noir event circuit, pouring their latest releases at the 2009 Pinot Days San Francisco. Wesmar is a two-person winery, with Kirk and Denise sharing all winemaking and winery management duties without the assistance of employees, consultants or brokers. Denise and Kirk have an ongoing good-natured dispute about who has the most winemaking experience, with Denise offering as proof of her superior know how a photo of her and her brother stomping Pasquinelli Zinfandel in 1974.
