Project Abstract Under MIMAP-Bangladesh, the Poverty Monitoring System developed and pilot-tested the methodology and indicators for a Local Level Poverty Monitoring System. The experimentation was carried out by the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD) in consultation with the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in the year of 2001-2002. The pilot testing was kept limited in four villages of Sreepur Union of Choudagram Upazila to acquire the required insights prior to its wider replication. With the successful outcomes of the pilot phase, the experimental phase is expanded in a Union named Muhammadpur (West) under Daudkandi Upazila covering all villages to examine its effectiveness at the Ward and Union levels. It is expected that an operational LLPMS at the Union level will play a complementary role with the national initiatives of poverty monitoring in providing both poverty and development related information and policy guidelines. It has distinct advantages over surface water resources. It is the most dependable resource and is available almost everywhere on land phases. It is hard to overstate the importance of groundwater in the life and economy of Bangladesh. Groundwater supplies over 90% of drinking water requirements and the vast majority of irrigation water. It is the only source of water supply for drinking and main source of irrigation in the area studied. The increased demands due to over population and development activities have stimulated investigations oriented towards quantifications of this resource. The large scale abstraction of groundwater for irrigation, without proper planning and management, has caused much environmental degradation. So, a detailed study is now essential for the conservation of this important resource in the specific area. Proper utilization of groundwater greatly precedes the analysis of static water levels in various extents of this inexhaustible resource. The increasing demand placed on it has stimulated to identify of this resource, which would be the basic of its exploration, management and conservation. -

MEJANARA KHATUN Plant Taxonomy Laboratory, Department of Botany, Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi-6205, Bangladesh Keywords: Assessment; Leafy vegetable taxa; Indigenous uses; Chapai Nawabganj District; Bangladesh. Abstract Leafy vegetables in Chapai Nawabganj district of Bangladesh was studied from January to December 2019. A total of 111 species belonging to 59 genera under 30 families were recorded, out of which, 52.25% species were wild and 46.84% species were cultivated in this study. Status of occurrence has been recorded for proper conservation management and sustainable utilization of the taxa resulting in 81.98% to be common, 17.11% as rare and 0.90% are found as vulnerable in the study area. A total of 93 medicinal plants have been documented with their uses for the cure of more than 53 diseases. The study showed that the people of Chapai Nawabganj district use leafy vegetables to treat their diseases. Therefore, the documented leafy vegetables should be further investigated for their efficacy and safety to be integrated into conventional medicine. Further more these leafy vegetables need to be conserved for their sustainable utilization. Introduction Leaf vegetables, also called potherbs, greens, or leafy greens, are plant leaves eaten as a vegetable, sometimes accompanied by tender petioles and shoots. Nearly one thousand species of plants with edible leaves are known (Rashid, 1999). Leaf vegetables most often come from short-lived herbaceous plants, such as lettuce and spinach. -

Inception Report Preparation of Development Plan under “Preparation of Development Plan for Fourteen Upazilas” Project- Package-04 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report describes the inception activities of the consultancy work for Package- 04 (Saghata Upazila of Gaibandha District and Sariakandi Upazila & Sonatola Upazila of Bogra District) of the ‘Preparation of Development Plan under Preparation of Development Plan for Fourteen Upazilas’ Project under Urban Development Directorate (UDD) of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The report is being submitted in pursuance of the agreement signed between the client Urban Development Directorate (UDD) and Modern Engineers Planners and Consultants Ltd. (MEPC) on 24th December 2014. The core objective of the project is preparing planning packages to ensure the future growth and development of the project area in a planned and organized way. The current project would emphasize over those activities focusing on all relevant social and physical infrastructure services and facilities including the national level communication network. It would emphasize over the economic development in and around the project area and also livelihood of the local people, who are very much depended on local economic activities. The current project would also emphasize over the change in land category, land use and livelihood pattern.
