  • Chronological Progression of Interior Design in Bangladesh with the Historical Faction and Scrutiny
Historical Research Letter www.iiste.org ISSN 2224-3178 (Paper) ISSN 2225-0964 (Online) Vol.28, 2016 Chronological Progression of Interior Design in Bangladesh with the Historical Faction and Scrutiny I. Ar. Farhana Choudhury Lecturer, Department of Interior Architecture Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology, Bangladesh Abstract The study of Interior design history of any country or society signifies the history of the settlement of the particular society, their level of culture, heritage, education and environment. All these several aspects indicate to the originality, individuality or in a word, ‘Design statement’ of a specific society or country. Design Statements serve to present intent, process, and the context of work. They vary from addressing a specific piece to looking at the overall approach to design. Design as art is the choices that the designers make in distinguishing themselves from others, and design statement is an expression of those choices. Modern human life actually evolves within one Interior to another. One may prefer open air, cool breeze or open field once or twice in a day but for resting purpose, executing household works, education or profession the ultimate destination is within the enclosure of four walls, a ceiling and a floor, an Interior space. So Interior plays a very significant role in life. There are several perspectives to look into Interior design; it may be professional or armature but the important aspect of it is impossible to escape. Keywords: Interior, Design, Chronology, Historical Progression, Movement Introduction: The study of interior design, its development and changes throughout the history, is a useful way both to explore the past and to make sense of the spaces in which modern life is lived.

Project Abstract Under MIMAP-Bangladesh, the Poverty Monitoring System developed and pilot-tested the methodology and indicators for a Local Level Poverty Monitoring System. The experimentation was carried out by the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD) in consultation with the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in the year of 2001-2002. The pilot testing was kept limited in four villages of Sreepur Union of Choudagram Upazila to acquire the required insights prior to its wider replication. With the successful outcomes of the pilot phase, the experimental phase is expanded in a Union named Muhammadpur (West) under Daudkandi Upazila covering all villages to examine its effectiveness at the Ward and Union levels. It is expected that an operational LLPMS at the Union level will play a complementary role with the national initiatives of poverty monitoring in providing both poverty and development related information and policy guidelines. Bangladesh Rice J. 21 (2) : 217-235, 2017 Cropping Patterns in Mymensingh Region: Diversity, Constraint and Potential A Khatun1*, N Parvin1, M M R Dewan2 and A Saha1 ABSTRACT A consistent and comprehensive database on cropping pattern, cropping intensity and crop diversity of a particular area is the prime importance for guiding policy makers, researchers, extentionists and development agencies for the future research and development planning. The study was carried out all the upazilas of Mymensingh region during 2015-16 using pre-designed and pre-tested semi- structured questionnaire with a view to document the existing cropping pattern, crop diversity and cropping intensity. The most dominant cropping pattern Boro−Fallow−T. Aman occupied about one- half of net cropped area (NCA) of the region distributed to 46 out of 47 upazilas. Single Boro cropping pattern ranked the second position which covered 23% of NCA distributed in 45 upazilas. A total of 129 cropping patterns were identified in the whole area of Mymensingh region under this investigation. The highest number of (30) cropping patterns were identified in Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj and the lowest was (10) in Sreebardi of Sherpur. The lowest crop diversity index (CDI) was reported (0.111) in Mithamoin of Kishoreganj followed by 0.114 at Khaliajuri in Netrokona. The highest value of CDI was observed 0.933 at Dewanganj in Jamalpur followed by 0.920 at Bhairab in Kishoreganj. The range of cropping intensity values was recorded 101-249%. The maximum value was for Hossainpur and minimum for Itna and Mithamoin in Kishoreganj. At a glance the calculated CDI of Mymensingh region was 0.840 and the average cropping intensity was 187%.

  • Rural-Urban Market Linkages and Its Impacts: a Case of Nimsar Vegetable Bazar
Journal of Society & Change Vol. XIV, No.3, July-September 2020 ISSN: 1997-1052 (Print), 227-202X (Online) Rural-Urban Market Linkages and its Impacts: A case of Nimsar Vegetable Bazar Mohammed Kamrul Hasan Kazi Foyez Ahmed Abstract Nimsarbazar (market) is situated at Dhaka - Chattogram highways under Burichang Upazila of Cumilla District in Bangladesh. The study attempts to identify the history of Nimsar market, look into the marketing channels of vegetables, and its present problems especially legal aspects Due to unique growth of vegetable production, nearby village farmers had evolved the roadside market in early 1980s. Eventually this growing market displays consumer’s attraction, employment, labour in migration. It also reflects the harness of the prospect of vegetable selling for the people from expanding urbanization. Presently ‘illegal structures’ wrangles uncertainty of major portion of market. Based on field work, observation, and interview, the study has investigated rural urban linkages, people’s perception, labour participation, expectations of local people. The market is pulling people from different districts for vegetable and fruits marketing. Market is running round the clock and peak time starts at midnight to late morning. On an average, the sale of vegetables of the market worth Taka more than Ten million in each day. Marginal farmers can sell their products easily here by giving minimum tax. According to oral voices supply of seasonal vegetables and fruits from different parts of Bangladesh has been increased after construction of Jamuna River Bridge. Presently expanding up to nearly two kilometers from north to south at both sides of the road, the impacts of market are manifolds.

  • Checklist of the Pteridophytes of Narsingdi District, Bangladesh
Jahangirnagar University J. Biol. Sci. 8(2): 13-24, 2019 (December) Checklist of the pteridophytes of Narsingdi District, Bangladesh Robayda Khanam, Saleh Ahammad Khan and Mohammod Abdur Rahim Plant Systematics and Biodiversity Laboratory, Department of Botany, Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Dhaka-1342, Bangladesh Abstract The occurrence of a total of 31 species of pteridophytes under 20 genera and 13 families in Narsingdi district were confirmed. Pteridaceae with 11 species was found as the largest family, which was followed by Salviniaceae and Polypodiaceae consisted of four species each and Thelypteridaceae with three species. Each of the rest nine families was represented by only one species. Pteris with six species was found as the largest genus, which was followed by Salvinia with three species, and Adiantum, Ceratopteris, Pyrrosia and Cyclosorus with two species each. Each of the rest 14 genera was represented by only one species. Among these species, 21 were found as terrestrial, two as both terrestrial and semiaquatic, four as aquatic and other four as epiphytic. The occurrence of Tectaria chattagrammica Ching, listed as DD (Data Deficient) in Red Data Book of Bangladesh, was common with natural regeneration in this district. Key words: Checklist, Pteridophyte, Narsingdi district, Bangladesh. INTRODUCTION Pteridophytes or the ferns and fern-allies are the most primitive vascular plants in the plant world. They were a major part of the earth’s luxuriant vegetation during the Carboniferous period (The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 2012). In the modern era, the pteridophytes are an important component of the flora of any area. They have been used as ornamentals and medicinals (Nayar, 1957; Benerjee & Sen, 1980; Dhiman, 1998; Dixit, 1974 and 1975; Hodge, 1973; Kaushik, 1998; Singh, et al., 1989; Benjamin & Manickam, 2007; Kavitha et al., 2017; Singh & Rajkumar, 2017).

  • INTEGRATING LAND with WATER ROUTES: Proposal for a Sustainable Spatial Network for Keraniganj in Dhaka
Proceedings of the Ninth International Space Syntax Symposium Edited by Y O Kim, H T Park and K W Seo, Seoul: Sejong University, 2013 INTEGRATING LAND WITH WATER ROUTES: Proposal for a sustainable spatial network for Keraniganj in Dhaka Farida Nilufar 031 Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology e-mail : [email protected] Labib Hossain Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology e-mail : [email protected] Mahbuba Afroz Jinia Stamford University Bangladesh e-mail : [email protected] Abstract Cities in the delta have unique spatial character being criss-crossed by rivers and canals. Keraniganj Upazila of Dhaka District is a settlement surrounded by two big rivers which are again connected by a canal network. The spatial network of Keraniganj, therefore, has got some significance due to its connectivity with the water-ways. However, as a result of many insentient manmade efforts, the water-ways of this settlement did not developed to any integrated system with the surface routes. Canals are being used as drainage channels or being filled up. Moreover, seasonal floods have detrimental effects on the land-use and infrastructure. As a result the potential development of Keraniganj is being hampered. A new land-use proposal under Detailed Area Plan (DAP) is in process of implementation. Besides, the inhabitants are trying to develop their own solution through a number of local roads. None of them, the professionals or the locals, ever takes the challenge to live negotiating with nature. It appears that the spatial characteristics of the existing and proposed network need to be explored in order to evolve a sustainable spatial network for Keraniganj.
