When I first read this script, I found myself laughing out loud every couple of pages. It’s a hilarious read of a farcical play, and I was really excited to watch it. Director Allison Narver mentioned that all of the characters are horrible people, and the protagonist of this show is comedy. Normally, I don’t love watching shows full of horrible people, but this one is so darn funny that I can spend the whole show rooting for the main character — comedy! After thinking about the play for a few weeks, and keeping up with the news cycle, I’ve been thinking more about themes in The Government Inspector. This production will simultaneously be quite relevant to our contemporary era of government corruption, and will be an escape to a world where that corruption is lampooned and all the officials get taken advantage of. This play can spark political discussions, but it can also just leave you laughing at the absurdity of it. It’s all in there. We hope you enjoy the show! 1 Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) The Overcoat Translated by Constance Garnett Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) was a Russian writer born in Ukraine and considered a founder of Russian realism, although elements of romanticism and the grotesque permeate his work. His most widely-read novels are Taras Bulba (1835), a historical romance, and Dead Souls (1842), a satirical novel critical of the Tsarist regime. “The Overcoat,” also known as “The Cloak,” was published in 1842. Fyodor Dostoyevsky is supposed to have said that all modern literature has come out of Gogol’s overcoat. In the department of—but it is better not to mention the department. There is nothing more irritable than departments, regiments, courts of justice, and, in a word, every branch of public service. Each individual attached to them nowadays thinks all society insulted in his person. Quite recently a complaint was received from a justice of the peace, in which he plainly demonstrated that all the imperial institutions were going to the dogs, and that the Czar's sacred name was being taken in vain; and in proof he appended to the complaint a romance in which the justice of the peace is made to appear about once every ten lines, and sometimes in a drunken condition. Therefore, in order to avoid all unpleasantness, it will be better to describe the department in question only as a certain department. So, in a certain department there was a certain official—not a very high one, it must be allowed—short of stature, somewhat pock-marked, red-haired, and short-sighted, with a bald forehead, wrinkled cheeks, and a complexion of the kind known as sanguine. -

Multifaceted Metaphor: Gogol’s Portrayal of St. Petersburg in Dead Souls Danielle Jones SUNY-Albany n an early letter to his mother, Nikolai Gogol observed that St. Petersburg was I not truly Russian: “Petersburg is not at all like other European capitals or Mos- cow. In general, every capital is characterized by its people, who throw their stamp of nationality on it; but Petersburg has no such character-stamp: the foreigners who settled here have made themselves at home and aren’t like foreigners at all, and the Russians in their turn have turned into foreigners—they aren’t one thing or the other” (29).1 This quotation provides an important insight into Gogol’s personal disillusionment with St. Petersburg which he expressed through increas- ingly elaborate and veiled means in his great works that culminated in Dead Souls. A close reading of Dead Souls in light of letters and biographical information high- lights how Gogol purposefully subverted the glamorous representation of St. Pe- tersburg typical of his day with the hope that his fellow countrymen would in turn examine their superficial and indolent lifestyles. Although written to his contem- poraries, Dead Souls remains important because it continues to be read in schools and by the larger Russian population. Thus, a critical study of Gogol’s portrayal of St. Petersburg highlights an imperative aspect of the historical and contempo- rary consciousness that has been shaped by Russians around its cultural and artis- tic capital. While scholars and readers alike acknowledge the importance of Dead Souls, this classic has received less critical attention than it merits; further, critics have not yet investigated the role of St. -

MASON: Gogolian Spatial Models and Mankind’s Potential for Redemption: A Comparison of “The Carriage” and Dead Souls (Under the direction of Christopher Putney) This analysis explores Nikolai Gogol’s utilization of spatial models in his short story “The Carr iage” and his epic novel Dead Souls in an attempt to deduce a connection between a character’s physical environment and his potential for redemption. These works are unique in that they reflect two distinct periods of a highly formative time in Gogol’s th eological development. “The Carriage,” the earlier published of the two, represents th is period’s point of departure, whereas Dead Souls conveys the output of Gogol’s complex journey. Employing the insight of Iurii Lotman, this study examines first the dominance of evil in the “static” environments of these two works and then its subordination to “boundless” space in Dead Souls . To replace his dominant model of evil even temporarily, though, Gogol was forced to extend his vision limitlessly, a task that w as ultimately more than he could bear. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Page -

Interestingly, the foundations for such a scheme can be found in Gogol's first major publication, Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka (1831-1832) and, in the prose fiction and plays of 1835-1836, a definite pattern is revealed. The pattern that evolved in the works of this period involves the emergence of a demonic element which shatters any illusion of a Paradise which may have been established previously. -

Signed ___________________________________________________ 2 SUMMARY This thesis marks the first comprehensive comparative study of the literary output of Nikolai Gogol and Oscar Wilde, from an intersectional perspective blending genre theory, queer theory, postcolonial theory and Jungian psychoanalysis, to examine the authors as sexually and ethnically closeted while estimating the impact of this closeting on their fiction. The thesis concludes that Nikolai Gogol and Oscar Wilde have significant parallels in their conception of the artistic process, explicable by a shared exposure anxiety, significant stylistic parallels, explicable by a shared imperative to generate interpretative suspense and facilitate plausibly deniable self-expression, and significant thematic parallels in their treatment of sexuality, ethnicity and identity, explicable by a shared experience of sexual and ethnic closeting. By establishing that all major sexual themes in the fiction of Nikolai Gogol have direct parallels in the fiction of Oscar Wilde, this thesis contributes to the contextualization of Gogol as a closeted writer, while proposing new aesthetic frameworks for the evaluation of Oscar Wilde. 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I am grateful for the advice and encouragement of my supervisor, Dr Sarah Smyth, of the Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies of Trinity College Dublin, and my co-supervisor, Dr Paul Delaney of the School of English, and my two examiners Jarlath Killeen and Claire Whitehead. -
