A. Mozart’s opera and concert arias for tenor are among the first music written specifically for this voice type as it is understood today, and they form an essential pillar of the pedagogy and repertoire for the modern tenor voice. Yet while the opera arias have received a great deal of attention from scholars of the vocal literature, the concert arias have been comparatively overlooked; they are neglected also in relation to their counterparts for soprano, about which a great deal has been written. There has been some pedagogical discussion of the tenor concert arias in relation to the correction of vocal faults, but otherwise they have received little scrutiny. This is surprising, not least because in most cases Mozart’s concert arias were composed for singers with whom he also worked in the opera house, and Mozart always paid close attention to the particular capabilities of the musicians for whom he wrote: these arias offer us unusually intimate insights into how a first-rank composer explored and shaped the potential of the newly-emerging voice type of the modern tenor voice. -

This six-week course takes a closer look at the music that inspired these bands, their roots-based influences, and their output of inspired work that was created in the 1960’s. Topics include: The early days, 1960-62: London, Liverpool and Hamburg: Importing rhythm and blues and rockabilly from the States…real rock and roll bands—what a concept! Watch out, world! The heady days of 1963: Don’t look now, but these guys just might be more than great cover bands…and they are becoming very popular…Beatlemania takes off. We can write songs; 1964: the rock and roll band as a creative force. John and Paul, their yin and yang-like personal and musical differences fueling their creative tension, discover that two heads are better than one. The Stones, meanwhile, keep cranking out covers, and plot their conquest of America, one riff at a time. The middle periods, 1965-66: For the boys from Liverpool, waves of brilliant albums that will last forever—every cut a memorable, sing-along winner. While for the Londoners, an artistic breakthrough with their first all--original record. Mick and Keith’s tempestuous relationship pushes away band founder Brian Jones; the Stones are established as a force in the music world. Prisoners of their own success, 1967-68: How their popularity drove them to great heights—and lowered them to awful depths. It’s a long way from three chords and a cloud of dust. -

Message. Presence. Joseph Mohr was born to an unwed mother on December 11, 1792, in Salzburg and baptized in the Salzburg Cathedral. Recognizing the young man’s talent, the vicar of the cathedral choir took Mohr under his wing, helping him with his educa- tion and fi nally his career as a priest. In 1816, he penned the lyrics to the song while on his fi rst assignment in Mariapfarr. Mohr met Franz Xaver Gruber, a teacher from Arnsdorf and the compos- er of the melody, when he moved to Oberndorf in 1817. Together they performed the song for the very fi rst time. This special exhibition touches on the history, message, and the continuing pres- ence of this world-renowned song. The exhibition is divided into six themes: the history of the song, the life stories of its creators, Mohr and Gruber, the tradition and distribution of the song, and the political and commercial instrumentalization. MR EVANS Mr Speaker it is with regret that this House records the passing of Britney Quintal Christian who sadly passed away on the 8th June. Britney was born in October 1993 the daughter of April and Darren. Britney was the most loyal sister to Dylan and Carissa and was so proud to become an Aunt to Taj and later Zya. She will be remembered by her friends as a powerful and influential young girl. Brit was a straight shooter and knew what she wanted in life. “She was orn a mission”. At three years old Brit was already on her motor bike. A girl of action, dedication, determination, little stubborn and always in momentum. Brit did nothing by halves. Brit grew up on Norfolk with the freedom of youth offered to all at Carscade Heights, surrounded by carefully constructed shortcuts of holes through and under hedges between the houses of her extended family and friends. -

MOZART REQUIEM: 1OO VOICES Lyn Williams Festive Alleluia Lyn Williams OAM is the founder and artistic director of Sydney Children's Choir and the national children's choir, Gondwana Voices. Under her leadership, the Gondwana Choirs organisation has grown to include twenty three ensembles, including the Gondwana Indigenous Children’s Choir. She has conducted most major professional choirs and orchestras in Australia, and has been music director and conductor for a number of major events, including the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Lyn is a Churchill Fellow and as a composer won the 2009 APRA–Australian Music Centre Vocal/Choral Work of the Year for her work A Flock of Stars. In 2015, Lyn was named one of The Australian Financial Review and Westpac’s 100 Women of Influence in the category of Culture. What to listen for Alleluia (or Hallelujah) comes from Hebrew and means ‘praise God.’ Lyn Williams composed this joyful processional work for Sydney Children's Choir. Inspired by medieval dance tunes, it alternates between two sections, with the parts at times singing in canon (that is, singing the same melody but starting one after the other). Anonymous Gaudete from Piae Cantiones 1582 The Piae Cantiones was a collection of medieval songs published in Sweden in 1582. They were unknown in England until three hundred years later, when a number of them were set to new words and published as Christmas carols. They included Good Christian Men, Rejoice, and Good King Wenceslas. Gaudete is also a Christmas carol. The words appear in the Piae cantiones, but the tune commonly used was probably composed in the sixteenth century. -
