The young lad shown in the photo with his telescope in the garden of his home in Pretoria, South Africa, is Alan Cousins, at the age of about fourteen (he was born in 1903). Dr. Cousins’ first contribution to the astronomical literature was published in 1924. Seventy-four years have passed since then, but Alan William James Cousins is still at work at his home base, the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), having recently published his latest paper (“Atmospheric Extinc- tion,” The Observatory, April 1998).

( 0 Comments ) UFC soundtrack band STEMM is set to drop a new groove metal album titled "Crossroads" ( reviewed here ) this coming September 13th, 2011. To let fans know what's in store on "Crossroads," vocalist/guitarist Joe Cafarella checked in with Metalunderground.com and dished on the album's writing process, what's going on with the lyrics this time around, and his thoughts on the different styles within metal. Joe also went into detail about the recently released "Left Behind" video, which skewers the many trends in modern metal. He commented on the inspiration behind the clip, "We had the 'scene' fans pick on us, even labels and managers tell us what we needed to do. Even when we did try to make others happy, it wasn't good enough and we were still the 'outcast' band. 'A band without a core' to say... Looking back over the years, I'm happy to say that STEMM is still here, doing our own thing and evolving how we want to. STEMM is not some bi-product of a metal genre. We're a rock band." Feature Releases Stemm - Blood Scent Phenium - IncubHate There's a strong scent of Shadows Fall in this album... After a few listens to metalcore group Stemm's latest album, Blood Scent , it becomes hard to tell if the band is its own entity, or if Shadows Fall decided to create more music under a different moniker. The music structure of Blood Scent is very Baroness - Blue Record similar to any of the recent Shadows Falls albums: the music is groovy and crunching while paired with shouted vocals mixed in with some singing The album itself tends to switch off between the two between tracks. Starting out with "Blood Soaked," there's a sample clip from what sounds to be in an emergency room and then the guitars and drums kick in with the vocalist roaring all the way. The second track, "House of Cards" is still heavy but it invokes a lot more singing (and even the singing sounds a lot like Brian Fair of 30 Seconds to Mars - Shadows Fall at times). The singing is more polished than the This is War shouting and goes along well with the music, and the music is a bit more melodic than holding that metalcore ferocity to it like the other tracks do. From this point on, the rest of the album follows suit. The next track features more screaming mixed with the singing, the following one a lot more singing than screaming, and so and so forth.
