Cannon efort president 2014/2015 Dear participants, Iamdelighted to welcome you all to the 16th EFORT Annual Congress, held on this occasion in the beautiful city of Prague. We are grateful to the Czech Society for Orthopaedics and Traumatology and the Slovak Orthopaedic and Traumatologic Society for their ongoing help with the programme. As usual the Congress follows the successful format developed over previous events. The main theme of the Congress is Infection –the most devastating complication of our surgical efforts on the patient’s behalf, and one that also arises rarely in de novo situations, particularly in children. Unfortunately, bacterial resistance to known antibiotics is increasingly common; alongside healthcare workers, orthopaedic surgeons and their colleagues need to develop new pathways to avoid this growing problem. There will be several sessions during the Congress on the economics of orthopaedic infections and adherence of bacteria to orthopaedic biomaterials, as well as discussions on management strategies in infected arthroplasty.Wehope you find the format both friendly and stimulating. Itwill, as usual, include complex case discussions, debate fora and sessions on evidence based medicine, together with interactive expert exchanges. The Comprehensive Review Course and the Nurse Session are now well-established sessions and have proved to be amajor success. This year our invited nation is the Japanese Orthopaedic Association. They will bring anumber of scientific papers, and enlighten us about their approach and perspectives on difficult problems; we anticipate aprofitable interchange. The two Honorary Lectures will be given by Professors Henrik Malchau and Michael Morlock, who are both international leaders in their fields. Ihope you will find time to attend both of these lectures, which promise to be very rewarding. As always we must thank our industrial sponsors for their help in bringing the Congress to fruition. Ihope that you not only visit the exhibition area throughout the time of the Congress, but also find time to attend the sponsored lunchtime events, which Iamsure you will find educational. Finally,Iwant to wish you avery enjoyable time in Prague. It goes without saying that the Congress is only as good as its participants, and with your participation Ilook forward to yet another stimulating social and educational event. Ialso look forward take out to seeing you in another wonderful location of Geneva, Switzerland in 2016. Mr.Stephen R. Cannon 2 Welcome Address introduCtion prof. dr.pavel dungl president of Czech society for orthopaedics and traumatology prof. dr.enric Cáceres Chairman of efort scientific Committee Dear participants, On behalf of the EFORT Scientific Committee, the Local Organising Committee of the Czech Society for Orthopaedics and Traumatology and the Slovak Orthopaedic and Traumatologic Society, wewould like to welcome you all to the 16th EFORT Congress in Prague. We think it will be and enjoyable and productive experience for everyone involved. The main theme of this year’s Congress is Infection. This complication in surgical procedures in orthopaedic and traumatic conditions is amajor economic concern for our national health services. In collaboration with the European Bone and Joint Infection Society, an attractive and important programme has been designed to discuss the most relevant issues on this subject. We have learnt that the most successful Congress activities are instructional lectures, debate fora and symposia. With this is mind, the Scientific Committee has prepared aseries of events on the latest developments in orthopaedics and traumatology. Out of 3,912 abstracts submitted, our expert panel of scientific advisors selected 676 to be presented as free papers, 90 clinical cases, 1,037 posters and 13 nurse abstracts. The Erwin Morscher honorary lecture will be presented by Professor Michael Morlock and the Michael Freeman honorary lecture by Professor Henrik Malchau. We are very much looking forward to hearing their contributions. We trust that you will find the extensive programme -ofover 200 sessions including the Comprehensive Review Course and lunch-time industry symposia -tobeinteresting, of great value, and memorable. Our Invited Nation this year is the Japanese Orthopaedic Associa- tion, represented by Professor Yukihide Iwamoto, who will enlighten us about their approaches to practice and experiences. We hope your stay in Prague during the EFORT Congress will be enjoyable and entertaining as well as educationally rewarding. Prof. Dr.Pavel Dungl Prof. Dr.Enric Cáceres President of Czech Society Chairman of EFORT Scientific Committee for Orthopaedics and Traumatology 3 AboutEFORT about efort The European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) is the platform organisation linking Europe‘s national orthopaedic associations. EFORT concentrates on two main goals: we will achieve our mission and vision by becoming apoint of reference in musculoskeletal diseases and injuries, and by raising awareness of musculoskeletal topics at the EU and global level. Our role as apoint of reference focuses on driving the scientific agenda, harmonising training and treatment, encouraging knowledge exchange and performing with ahigh level of integrity.Toraise awareness at the EU and global level we will be collaborating closely with our members network. The EBOTexam, as the common result of both set goals, will be promoted and will influence the drafting of training curricula aimed at establishing acommon level among the variety of training approaches that currently exists around Europe. To fulfil its objectives, EFORT organises an annual congress, acomprehensive advance training programme (ATP), and is present at major European conferences. With its annualcongress EFORT offers an internationalstage for the latest developments in the field of musculoskeletal diseases and trauma, and constitutes aunique platform for surgeons, physicians and other healthcare professionals to absorb and track the latest scientific findings. Moreover, last year,EFORT launched the EFORT Textbook entitled European Surgical Orthopaedics and Traumatology.Professor George Bentley,Editor of the impressive 7volume collection, explains that this is in line with EFORT’s increasingly important role in education as an important investment into the future. This new reference book reflects the state of art and the best current practice in orthopaedics and traumatology surgery across Europe and thereby also enhances the process of harmonisation of education in our field. EFORTnet, the orthopaedicand traumatology platform, fosters knowledge sharing and capacity building. Education and science is increasingly delivered through the internet hence adding one important channel to access knowledge. Though congress and courses remain primary ways to teach and learn, the e-world innovates the approach to the harmonization of training throughout Europe by reaching beyond geographic boundaries. 4 TheEFORT Academy intorduCtion introduCtion www.efort.org/academy TheEFORT Academy Apeernetwork, whereorthopaedicsurgeons&heathcare leadersmeet #EFORTacademy Excellence in Orthopaedics andTraumatology TheEFORT Academy‘smain objectiveistosustain thevisionofEFORT,tocapture andbuild on theprofes- sional capacity of theFederationbydrivingthe scientific agenda, harmonisingeducation andtreatment, encouragingknowledge exchange andperformingwithahighlevel of integrity.
