Laysan Island once supported the sub-species, Laysan Millerbird (Acrocephalus familiaris familiaris), before introduced rabbits caused their extirpation. A translocation of the Nihoa Millerbird from Nihoa Island to Laysan Island would serve two goals; establish a satellite population of a critically endangered species and restore the ecological role played by an insectivore passerine on Laysan Island. Laysan Island was assessed as a suitable translocation site for the Nihoa Millerbird with a focus placed on dietary requirements. This study showed that Laysan Island would serve as a suitable translocation site for the Nihoa Millerbird with adequate densities of invertebrate prey. -

CHARUCS HOWARD EDMONPSON INTRODUCTION 1 |M v. iV The taxonomic section of this paper is limited to a treatment of crus f ? taceans collected during the cruise of the "Tanager" from April 4, 1923, to August 13, 1923. It is an attempt to supplement and extend knowledge of the distribution of the crustacean fauna of the Pacific. A few species apparently new to science are described and a consider able number of new records for the North Pacific Ocean are listed. The known crustacean fauna of the leeward Hawaiian islands, at least as far to the westward as Paysan Island, considerably exceeds that listed here. While more than 60 species were collected by "the Tanager Expedition at Paysan Island alone, but ten of them are represented in the list of 25 1 reported from that locality by Penz (15),1 and many of the species taken ' i- ^ by the ''Albatross" in 1902 were not duplicated by the Tanager Expedition. All but two of the thirteen species of crustaceans reported from Wake Island by ' Dana (7) are included in the list of more than a hundred i ... collected in that locality by the Expedition of 1923. The naturalists of the United States Exploring Expedition, while ashore at Wake Island, appar ently did not observe the large land hermit crab, Cocnohila oli-vcra Owen, which is one of the most abundant and conspicuous members of the laud fauna of the island today. -

CHAPTER 2: AFFECTED ENVIRONMENT CHAPTER 2 AFFECTED ENVIRONMENT 2.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter describes the physical, biological, social, and economic conditions that occur within the region of influence (ROI) of the Proposed Action alternative. Only those conditions relevant to the Proposed Action alternative are presented. Resource areas discussed include natural resources, cultural and historic resources, human uses and activities, human health, safety, and hazardous materials, land use economic and social conditions, water quality, transportation and communications infrastructure, and utilities. Chapter 2 is organized by resource area. Each resource area discussion includes an overview of the resource area with background on how the resource is related to the Proposed Action alternative, a general overview of relevant legislative requirements governing the resource, where applicable, and a discussion of the conditions of the resource within the ROI. The ROI discussed in this report varies for each resource evaluated. For example, the ROI for water resources primarily includes those islands where specific actions take place, whereas the ROI for socioeconomics includes the entire state of Hawai‘i; therefore, the regions of influence are not the same for all potentially affected resource areas. Figure 2.1 includes the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, the boundaries of the Monument, and the main Hawaiian Islands, all of which may be included in the ROIs for each resource area. PAPAHĀNAUMOKUĀKEA UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Papahānaumokuākea is the name given to a vast and isolated linear cluster of small, low lying islands and atolls, with their surrounding ocean, extending some 1,931 km to the north west of the main Hawaiian Archipelago, located in the north-central Pacific Ocean. The property comprises the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM), which extends almost 2,000 km from southeast to northwest in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI). COUNTRY United States of America NAME Papahānaumokuākea MIXED WORLD HERITAGE SITE 2010: Inscribed on the World Heritage List under cultural criteria (iii) and (vi) and natural criteria (viii), (ix) and (x). STATEMENT OF OUTSTANDING UNIVERSAL VALUE The UNESCO World Heritage Committee issued the following Statement of Outstanding Universal Value at the time of inscription: Brief Synthesis The property includes a significant portion of the Hawai’i-Emperor hotspot trail, constituting an outstanding example of island hotspot progression. Much of the property is made up of pelagic and deepwater habitats, with notable features such as seamounts and submerged banks, extensive coral reefs, lagoons and 14 km2 emergent lands distributed between a number of eroded high islands, pinnacles, atoll islands and cays. With a total area of around 362,075 km2 it is one of the largest marine protected areas in the world. The geomorphological history and isolation of the archipelago have led to the development of an extraordinary range of habitats and features, including an extremely high degree of endemism. Largely as a result of its isolation, marine ecosystems and ecological processes are virtually intact, leading to exceptional biomass accumulated in large apex predators. -

Annotated Checklist ofthe Fishes ofWake Atoll 1 Phillip S. Lobel2 and Lisa Kerr Lobel 3 Abstract: This study documents a total of 321 fishes in 64 families occurring at Wake Atoll, a coral atoll located at 19 0 17' N, 1660 36' E. Ten fishes are listed by genus only and one by family; some of these represent undescribed species. The first published account of the fishes of Wake by Fowler and Ball in 192 5 listed 107 species in 31 families. This paper updates 54 synonyms and corrects 20 misidentifications listed in the earlier account. The most recent published account by Myers in 1999 listed 122 fishes in 33 families. Our field surveys add 143 additional species records and 22 new family records for the atoll. Zoogeo graphic analysis indicates that the greatest species overlap of Wake Atoll fishes occurs with the Mariana Islands. Several fish species common at Wake Atoll are on the IUCN Red List or are otherwise of concern for conservation. Fish pop ulations at Wake Atoll are protected by virtue of it being a U.S. military base and off limits to commercial fishing. Native Plant Propagation Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge Kim Martz and Forest Starr June 1999 I. Introduction The purpose of this report is to provide effective and efficient ways of propagating native Hawaiian plants for future out-planting. This report will provide guidelines for nursery maintenance, general propagating and out-planting techniques, and specific information on propagating and out-planting native plant species known from Midway Atoll. The following report is intended to assist in future restoration efforts. Plant names and descriptions were taken from: The Manuals of the Flowering Plants of Hawai'i by Warren L. Wagner, Derral R. Herbst and S. H. Sohmer (1990); In Gardens of Hawai'i by Marie Neal (1965); Flowers of the Pacific Island Seashore by W. Arthur Whistler. Drawings and photos were taken from: The Manuals of the Flowering Plants of Hawai'i by Warren L. Wagner, Derral R. Herbst and S. H. Sohmer (1990) and from Plants of Midway Atoll by Nanette W. H. Seto (date unknown).
