Class We started the class with three Omkars followed by the Shanti Mantra, Guru Brahama and Before Studies Prayer. Then we got into Ramayana story. There was a kingdom of Kosala on the north of river Ganga. Its capital was a very beautiful city of Ayodhya, which was built on the banks of river Sarayu by Manu (famous ruler of the Solar Dynasty). People were happy, content, truthful, and noble. King Dasharatha ruled the kingdom, he was fair, generous, and beloved by all the people in his kingdom. He was mighty warrior, and ruled his kingdom justly and wisely with guidance from Sage Vasishtha and Sage Vaindeva, who were great scholars and they were famed for their learning, self-respect and self-control. King Dasharatha had glory, fame and prosperity but he was not a happy man. King Dasharatha had three wives – Kausalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi. But he did not have any kids. So one day king approached Sage Vasishtha and told him about his sadness. Sage Vasishtha took king to Sage Hrishya-Shringa, who advised him to perform a special Yagna called Putrakameshti Yagna. Sanskar Academy 1 Sanskar Gurukul Weekly Update While this yagna was in progress the Devas led by Lord Indra went to Lord Brahma, the creator. They said, “My Lord, we are painfully suffering and only you can help us. So Lord Brahma wanted to know what was troubling them And they said, “We are unable to bear dangers of Ravana. He has been harassing us very much and we have reached a point where we can’t bear it any longer. You granted him boons which have made him powerful. Because of that we have to suffer all the bad things he does. Lord Brahma listened to them and said, “You are right. I have granted him immunity form the hands of Devas, Danavas, Rakshasa, Gandharvas and Yakshas, so you all are helpless. In his arrogance Ravana did not seem worthy of himself to ask immunity from the hands of a man, so he will be killed by man. While they were talking Lord Vishnu came, so they all said please protect us from suffering, protect the world form evil. Lord Vishnu thought for a moment and he know it was time for him to take Avatara to save the world form Ravana. He also knew King Dashratha was performing yagna, he thought King Dashratha is a righteous man and he would be my father. He told Devas and Lord Brahma about his decision and they were overjoyed. They thought a few more years and then everything will be ok. Lord Vishnu also asked for help and said, “That you will have to be born on the earth to as bears and monkeys and help me when time comes. As King Dasharatha's Yagna was being performed, there emerged Yagna-Purusha who was magnificent and glowing. He gave a bowl of Kheer to King Dasharatha and asked him to distribute it among his wives. King Dasharatha happily accepted and gave it to two of his wives – Queen Kausalya and Queen Kaikeyi. When Queen Sumitra arrived Queen Kausalya and Queen Kaikeyi, each gave half of their share to her. After some time four boys were born. Queen Kausalya and Queen Kaikeyi gave birth to one son each and Queen Sumitra gave birth to twins. Queen Kausalya gave birth to Lord Rama, Queen Sumitra to Lakshmana and Shatrughna, and Queen Kaikeyi to Bharata. We practiced chanting Shanti Mantra, Before Studies prayer, 1st sloka of Shree Guru Stotram and last Ending prayer. We ended the class with Ending Prayer. Homework 1. Practice Shanti Mantra and Ending prayers. 2. Alphabet B from Alphabet book. Announcements 1. Parents are welcome to sit in the General Assembly every Sunday from 11:00-11:30am 2. After a period of confusion she stated that she was one Shiva who had been murdered in another village. She gave enough details to permit verification of her statements, which corresponded to facts in the life of another young married woman called Shiva. Shiva had lived in a place about 100 km away, and she had died violently there-either by suicide or murder-about two months before Sumitra's apparent death and revival. Subsequently, Sumitra recognized 23 persons (in person or in photographs) known to Shiva. She also showed in several respects new behavior that accorded with Shiva's personality and attainments. For example, Shiva's family were Brahmins (high caste), whereas Sumitra's were Thakurs (second caste); after the change in her personality Sumitra showed Brahmin habits that were strange in her fam- ily. Extensive interviews with 53 informants satisfied the investigators that the families concerned had been, as they claimed, completely unknown to each other before the case developed and that Sumitra had had no normal knowledge of the people and events in Shiva's life.

  • Narada Bhakti Sutra a Summary of Swami Tadatmananda’S Discourse October 17, 2006
Narada Bhakti Sutra A summary of Swami Tadatmananda’s Discourse October 17, 2006 As was noted previously, the primary means to pursue the goal of sadhya bhakti is nyaasa, which is a process of negation (rather than acquisition) that leads to the discovery that you already are what you want to become. Nyaasa has two aspects: ananyata (non-difference) and udaasinata (indifference). Ananyata implies a state of being not different (one or advaita), whereas udasinata implies a lack of interest towards pursuits other than spiritual growth. Since sutras are terse statements, they can have more than one meaning. Thus, ananyata and udasinata, in the next few sutras have meanings applicable to both sadhana and sadhya bhakti. Ananyata as sadhana bhakti is a commitment to nothing other than the pursuit of one’s goal, i.e., reaching God. With respect to sadhya bhakti it is the state of having reached that goal- being “no other” or being non- separate from God (aadvaita). Similarly, udasinata, for sadhana bhakti is to stay away from any other interests and attachments except spiritual growth, whereas for sadhya bhakti it is the state of indifference (towards non-spiritual interests) that has been achieved. Sutra 11: Loka-vedeshu tad-anukoola-aacharanam tad-virodhishu udaasinata Translation: Indifference to worldly and sacred activities that are opposed to “that” and performance of those that are conducive to “that”. Commentary: This sutra further clarifies that udasinata to worldly and sacred activities (prescribed by Vedas) means to avoid those worldly and sacred (Vedic) activities that hinder spiritual growth and to do the ones that are conducive to attaining “that”, i.e., prema bhakti; specifically, make spiritual growth your number one priority.

  • Ramakatha Rasavahini I Chapter 3
Chapter 3. Curse of No Progeny for Dasaratha The envy of Ravana ithin a short time, Dasaratha’s fame illumined all quarters, like the rays of the rising sun. He had the intre- Wpidity and skill of ten charioteers rolled into one, so the name Dasa-ratha (the ten-chariot hero) was found appropriate. No one could stand up against the onrush of his mighty chariot! Every contemporary ruler, mortally afraid of his prowess, paid homage to his throne. The world extolled him as a hero without equal, a paragon of virtue, a statesman of highest stature. Ravana, the demon (rakshasa) King of Lanka, heard of Dasaratha and his fame. He was so envious that he determined on a sure plan to destroy him, by means fair or foul. Ravana sought for an excuse to provoke Dasaratha into a fight; one day, he sent word through a messenger that unless tribute was paid to him, he would have to meet Ravana on the battlefield and demonstrate his superior might in war. This call was against international morality, but what morality did a demon respect? When Dasaratha heard the messenger, he laughed outright, in derision. Even while the messenger was look- ing on, he shot sharp deadly arrows, which reached Lanka itself and fastened the gates of that city! Addressing the envoys, Dasaratha said, “Well, Sirs! I have now made fast the doors of your fortress city. Prema Vahini Your master cannot open them, however hard he may try. That is the ‘tribute’ I pay to your impertinent lord.” When the envoys returned and informed Ravana of this, he was shocked to find all the doors closed fast.

  • Ramayan Ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu Way of Life and the Contribution of Hindu Women, Amongst Others
Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) Mahila Shibir 2020 East and South Midlands Vibhag FOREWORD INSPIRING AND UNPRECEDENTED INITIATIVE In an era of mass consumerism - not only of material goods - but of information, where society continues to be led by dominant and parochial ideas, the struggle to make our stories heard, has been limited. But the tides are slowly turning and is being led by the collaborative strength of empowered Hindu women from within our community. The Covid-19 pandemic has at once forced us to cancel our core programs - which for decades had brought us together to pursue our mission to develop value-based leaders - but also allowed us the opportunity to collaborate in other, more innovative ways. It gives me immense pride that Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) have set a new precedent for the trajectory of our work. As a follow up to the successful Mahila Shibirs in seven vibhags attended by over 500 participants, 342 Mahila sevikas came together to write 411 articles on seven different topics which will be presented in the form of seven e-books. I am very delighted to launch this collection which explores topics such as: The uniqueness of Bharat, Ramayan ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu way of life and The contribution of Hindu women, amongst others. From writing to editing, content checking to proofreading, the entire project was conducted by our Sevikas. This project has revealed hidden talents of many mahilas in writing essays and articles. We hope that these skills are further encouraged and nurtured to become good writers which our community badly lacks.

  • Iyengar's Sitayana: a Retelling of the Saga of Sita
International Journal of Education, Modern Management, Applied Science & Social Science (IJEMMASSS) 442 ISSN : 2581-9925, Impact Factor: 5.143, Volume 02, No. 03, July - September, 2020, pp.442-446 IYENGAR’S SITAYANA: A RETELLING OF THE SAGA OF SITA Dr. Charulata Verma ABSTRACT Different versions of Sita’s story exist in myth, literature, folk tales and performing arts, prompting fresh interpretation and retellings of this enigmatic figure of hoary antiquity who has made an indelible imprint on the psyche and mind of the Indian people. Some tellings deify her while others humanize her relating her trials and tribulations to the daily life of Indian womanhood. That a character of remote antiquity could exert such a sterling influence on the lives of the people of the Indian sub- continent after thousands of years, makes people tell her saga again and again with a new and varied interpretation de novo.of silent strength and sufferance sublime. The rendering of Rama-Sita-Ravana saga as Sitayana: Epic of the Earth-born (1987), a new and free re-recital of a familiar old tale, carries a fresh approach and organizing principle in viewing of the saga in a new perspective as essentially the story of Sita: sitayah charitam mahat. The thoughts projected through Sita’s mind, since she is the brooding spirit of the whole saga, ranging from purely personal reminiscence to metaphysical queries, echoing at the same time the doubts and queries of contemporary Indian mind, lie at the heart of the reinterpretation of the epic. Keywords: Retelling, Saga, Epic, Feminine, Rishipatnis. ________________ Introduction Sitayana: Epic of the Earth-born A widely admired literary critic, poet, an erudite scholar and the chief authority of Indian English literature Iyengar recasts the Ramayana as quintessentially Sita’s story Sitayana: Epic of the Earth-born, ‘Sita’s saga sublime’.
