Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) Mahila Shibir 2020 East and South Midlands Vibhag FOREWORD INSPIRING AND UNPRECEDENTED INITIATIVE In an era of mass consumerism - not only of material goods - but of information, where society continues to be led by dominant and parochial ideas, the struggle to make our stories heard, has been limited. But the tides are slowly turning and is being led by the collaborative strength of empowered Hindu women from within our community. The Covid-19 pandemic has at once forced us to cancel our core programs - which for decades had brought us together to pursue our mission to develop value-based leaders - but also allowed us the opportunity to collaborate in other, more innovative ways. It gives me immense pride that Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) have set a new precedent for the trajectory of our work. As a follow up to the successful Mahila Shibirs in seven vibhags attended by over 500 participants, 342 Mahila sevikas came together to write 411 articles on seven different topics which will be presented in the form of seven e-books. I am very delighted to launch this collection which explores topics such as: The uniqueness of Bharat, Ramayan ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu way of life and The contribution of Hindu women, amongst others. From writing to editing, content checking to proofreading, the entire project was conducted by our Sevikas. This project has revealed hidden talents of many mahilas in writing essays and articles. We hope that these skills are further encouraged and nurtured to become good writers which our community badly lacks. -

But with the students of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning and Sai devotees in general, it is different. Summer is when the much- awaited Summer Course in Indian Culture and Spiri- tuality takes place, crowned of course by the memora- ble Divine Discourses of Bhagavan Baba. Swami’s discourses are always nectarine but sweeter it is when the Lord talks about His own in- carnations. In the Summer Course of 1996, The Rama- yana was the anchor around which Bhagavan devel- oped His exhortations. -

2. Glory Of Rama Thathwa The name Rama is sweeter than sugar and the best of honey. It is more tasteful than curd too. As you go on repeating the name of Rama, it tastes like nectar itself. Hence, repeat the name of Rama with all your heart, with utter sincerity. The Ramayana has been described as the story of Rama, the ideal man. In fact every human, in a way, is Rama Himself, when he embodies the ideals of Rama. Hence, it is imperative on the part of every in- dividual to cultivate the ideals of Rama. The Rama- yana enshrines in itself the very essence of the dharma (righteousness) of the individual, family, and society. Though thousands of years have passed since the story of Rama was first written, the inner story of the Ramayana is being enacted every moment of our life. The Ramayana does not signify the story of Rama alone; for, the word ‘Rama’ signifies Sita as well. Rama means Sita, the daughter of the earth. Since the earth is a part of Nature (Prakruthi), every child born on this earth should try to cultivate the qualities of Sita. Valmiki, at the beginning of the Ramayana was swayed by the idea that Rama was the ideal man. But during the course of his writing, he was overpowered by the feeling that Rama was Divinity itself and con- cluded, at the end of the epic, that Rama was the Em- bodiment of Divinity. On the other hand, Tulsidas be- gan his Ramayana with the firm faith that Rama was Summer Showers in Brindavan 1996 15 verily Lord Narayana Himself and concluded empha- sising the fact that Rama was the ideal man. -

Hawana is one of the most important vedic ritualistic sacrifice which involves lighting fire in a rectangular Homa Kunda using dravyas. In the present scenario these are performed at the beginning of Shubha Karyas to get expected results. The priests conducting the hawanas has been interviewed. Personal observations of eight important forms of hawana were done throughout the study area. A comparative account of plants used in 8 types of hawana have been given. In present communication Botanical identity of 55 taxa, their vernacular name, family, useful part and mode of usage have been documented. Key words : Rituals, Hawana, Botanical identity. Introduction Rituals are part of human life since time immemorial. In the past man was living according to the tune of Mother Nature. But conditions changed after the advent of civilization, the civilized man became religious while the religious approach has deviated him from his original objectives and remained only as a ritual. The historical function of the rituals is to remind us about our immemorial past and connects the past generation with the present like a bridge. India is a country, which is rich in rituals. The rituals like hawana, pooja are performed according to the procedure described in the Vedas, Upanishads, Dharmasindhu, Nirnayasindhu, Vishwamitra karika and Bodhayana’s Brahmakarma Samucchaya to reap the benefit in the form of good health and ecological balance. -
