The “sphecid’ fauna of Saudi Arabia (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) is listed. A total of 207 species in 42 genera are recorded including previous and new species records. Most Saudi Arabian species recorded up to now are more or less common and widespread mainly in the Afrotropical and Palaearctic zoogeographical zones, the exception being Bembix buettikeri Guichard, Bembix hofufensis Guichard, Bembix saudi Guichard, Cerceris constricta Guichard, Oxybelus lanceolatus Gerstaecker, Palarus arabicus Pulawski in Pulawski & Prentice, Tachytes arabicus Guichard and Tachytes fidelis Pulawski, which are presumed endemic to Saudi Arabia (3.9% of the total number of species). General distribution and ecozones, and Saudi Arabian localities are given for each species. In this study two genera (Diodontus Curtis and Dryudella Spinola) and 11 species are newly recorded from Saudi Arabia. The sting of the Aculeata or stinging wasps is a modifed ovipositor; its function (killing or paralyzing prey, defense against predators) and the associated anatomical changes are apomorphic for Aculeata. The change in the purpose of the ovipositor/sting from being primarily an egg laying device to being primarily a weapon has resulted in modifcation of its handling that is supported by specifc morphological adaptations. Here, we focus on the sheaths of the sting (3rd valvulae = gonoplacs) in Aculeata, which do not penetrate and envenom the prey but are responsible for cleaning the ovipositor proper and protecting it from damage, identifcation of the substrate for stinging, and, in some taxa, contain glands that produce alarm pheromones. -

The list includes 70 identified valid species in 10 genera and four subfamilies: Ammophilinae (4 genera, 35 species), Chloriontinae (1 genus, 6 species), Sceliphrinae (2 genera, 8 species) and Sphecinae (3 genera, 21 species). Distributions, both on the Peninsula and extra-limital, are provided for each species and subspecies; four species (6%) are endemic to the Arabian Peninsula. Key words: Ammophilinae, Chloriontinae, Sceliphrinae, Sphecinae, distribution Sphecidae Latreille, 1802 The Sphecidae (s.s.) are a cosmopolitan family of wasps, comprising the digger wasps, mud daubers and other thread-waisted wasps. A total of 787 extant species in 19 genera and five subfamilies (Ammophilinae, Chlorion- tinae, Sceliphrinae, Sphecinae and Stangeellinae) are currently included in the family (Pulawski 2019). The largest genus, Ammophila W. Kirby, comprises 240 species, followed by Sphex Linnaeus (132 species) (Pulawski 2019), together forming about 47% of the total number of species. Species of the family Sphecidae can easily be distin- guished from other spheciform families by their petiolate metasoma and the large anal lobe of the hind wing (Bohart & Menke 1976; Finnamore 1993). -

For many years, the only such wasps known were the five species cited by Wheeler (1928) in his classic book on the social insects. More primitively social wasps are now known (for a partial list see West-Eberhard, 1979). It is clear, however, that many more remain to be discovered, and information on the biology of primitively social species is still scarce. It therefore seems worth- while to report the following brief notes on Xenorynchium nitidu- lum (Fabricius), a primitively social wasp found in India. The observations reported here were made on nests collected in the vil- lage of Janla, Puri District, Orissa (about 20 degrees N.Latitude) in November, 1979. X. nitidulum is widely distributed in India. Vecht (1963 p. 112) cites Dover and Rao (1922) as recording this species from Calcutta, Pusa, Bangalore, Lucknow, Kashmir, and Lahore (Punjab). NEST STRUCTURE AND CONTENTS Xenorhynchium nitidulum builds a nest consisting of several barrel-shaped mud cells coated with an amber-colored substance that is sticky when fresh, and that later forms a hard lumpy coating: This coating strengthens the rather fragile mud walls of the cells which are only 0.25-0.5 mm thick. It may also afford some protec- tion against insect predators and parasitoids, as further discussed below. -

MATTHEWS Department of Entomology, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602 ABSTRACT -- Nine species of sphecid wasps nesting in sparsely vegetated sandy soils near Ogallala, Keith County, Nebraska were studied during June 2003. The first records of the nest and prey of Cerceris clypeata gnarina Banks and Tachysphex williamsi R. Bohart are presented. Two species of weevils, Baris striata Say and B. subsimilis Casey, were prey of C. clypeata gnarina, with 12 to 22 individuals stocked per cell. Because B. subsimilis is a biological control agent for thistle, this finding is a caution to researchers not to ignore the potential impact of predatory wasps on the community. The single nest of T williamsi was a shallow burrow 5 cm deep; prey included grasshopper nymphs of Melanoplus sp. and M angustipennis (Dodge). -

While there is a trade-off between transport capacity and trips required per cell, the highest provisioning rates are achieved by bees carrying very large pollen loads at intermediate trip durations. Spheciformes Wasps (Hymenoptera, Apoidea) from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Here we present a species list of spheciformes wasps of the families Ampulicidae, Sphecidae and Crabronidae, registered in west and southwest of the Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. The surveys were conducted in 22 sampling points, with emphasis on Serra da Bodoquena region, covering the biomes: Cerrado, Atlantic Forest and Chaco. We recorded 506 individuals distributed in 47 genera and 109 species. Trypoxylon Latreille was the most diverse genus with 155 individuals collected and 12 morphospecies, being the only genus sampled in all methodologies. Eremnophila binodis (Fabricius, 1798) was the most abundant species recorded from these wasps with 35 individuals collected. This list adds 83 new records to this wasp’s distribution in the state, expanding to 139 species of wasps spheciformes known to the state. KEYWORDS. Apresentamos aqui uma lista de espécies de vespas esfeciformes das famílias Ampulicidae, Sphecidae e Crabronidae registradas para o oeste e sudoeste do estado de Mato Grosso do Sul em inventários recentes realizados em 22 pontos amostrais, com principal ênfase na Serra da Bodoquena, contemplando os principais biomas do estado como o Cerrado, a Mata Atlântica e o Chaco Brasileiro.
