It is filled with women who had the fortitude and determination to stand up against all odds ones who set a great example for generations to come. Ramayana is full of women, who were mentally way stronger than the glorified heroes of this great Indian epic. From Jhansi Ki Rani to Irom Sharmila, From Savitribai Fule to Sonia Gandhi and From Jijabai to Seeta, Indian women have always stood up for their rights and fought their battles despite restrictions and limitations. They are the shining beacons of hope and have displayed exemplary dedication in their respective fields. I have studied few characters of Ramayana who teaches us the importance of commitment, ethical values, principles of life, dedication & devotion in relationship and most importantly making us believe in women power. E-mail:[email protected] ABSTRACT The epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata have been an integral part of the Indian cultural tradition. Since centuries, they have been told and reinterpreted several times and handed down from one generation to another. The Ramayana is based on the morals such as the triumph of goodness over evil, obedience, brotherhood, love, compassion, sacrifice – all looped into the thread of Indian cultural tradition with an emphasizes on the value of dharma. However, there are some female characters that have been left on the margin in this epic and have been portrayed as upholders of male honour. They are devoid of the proper attention for their roles and sacrifices they deserve. Kavita Kane in her novel, Sita’s Sister has revisited the Ramayana from the daring and unwavering Urmila’s (Laxmana’s wife) perspective – a marginalized character who has never received the responsiveness she is worthy of. Kane has given voice to the muted character of Urmila. The present paper studies the contemporary relevance of Sita’s Sister from feminist- revisionist myth-making point of view. Urmila Devi – the Unsung Heroine of the Ramayana
Urmila Devi ± The Unsung heroine of the Ramayana Sita-devi was an adopted daughter of Maharaja Janaka and Maharani Sunanya. He had found a baby `Sita' while ploughing the land for a yagna (fire sacrifice/havan). Urmila on the other hand was the biological daughter of Maharaja Janaka and Maharani Sunanya. She was younger to Sita-devi by a few years. She was betrothed to Lakshmana when Lord Raam and Sita-devi's marriage was fixed When Lord Raam broke Lord's Shiva's bow He immediately became the person eligible to marry Sita-devi. Next, Maharaja Dasharath came to Maharaja Janaka's kingdom of Mithila to talk about the wedding dates and time. This was the time when Rajkumari Urmila was betrothed to Rajkumar Lakshmana. Both Sita-devi and Urmila were married to Lord Raam and Lord Lakshmana on the same day. She Wanted to Accompany Lakshmana during the 14 Year Exile, but Lakshmana refused her wish. According to Valmiki's Ramayana, Urmila was all set to accompany her husband along with her sister Sita-devi and brother-in-law Lord Raam when the trio was leaving for the forest. However, Lakshmana advised her to stay back to take good care of her in- laws. Further stating it he is going to the forest as a slave of his brother where he will be busy serving them and will have no time to look after her or even care for her. He begged her to stay back and Urmila reluctantly had to agree her husbands request. She remained asleep for 14 Years so that Lakshman could fulfill His duty attentively One the very first night of the exile, Lord Raam and Sita-devi went to sleep in the forest while Lakshman kept a watch on them. -

Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) Mahila Shibir 2020 East and South Midlands Vibhag FOREWORD INSPIRING AND UNPRECEDENTED INITIATIVE In an era of mass consumerism - not only of material goods - but of information, where society continues to be led by dominant and parochial ideas, the struggle to make our stories heard, has been limited. But the tides are slowly turning and is being led by the collaborative strength of empowered Hindu women from within our community. The Covid-19 pandemic has at once forced us to cancel our core programs - which for decades had brought us together to pursue our mission to develop value-based leaders - but also allowed us the opportunity to collaborate in other, more innovative ways. It gives me immense pride that Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) have set a new precedent for the trajectory of our work. As a follow up to the successful Mahila Shibirs in seven vibhags attended by over 500 participants, 342 Mahila sevikas came together to write 411 articles on seven different topics which will be presented in the form of seven e-books. I am very delighted to launch this collection which explores topics such as: The uniqueness of Bharat, Ramayan ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu way of life and The contribution of Hindu women, amongst others. From writing to editing, content checking to proofreading, the entire project was conducted by our Sevikas. This project has revealed hidden talents of many mahilas in writing essays and articles. We hope that these skills are further encouraged and nurtured to become good writers which our community badly lacks. -
