  • Martyrs and Confessors of Lugdunum: a Validation of Eusebius’S Documentation
122 Scrinium 11 (2015) 122-134 Ohtani Journal of Patrology and Critical Hagiography www.brill.com/scri Martyrs and Confessors of Lugdunum: A Validation of Eusebius’s Documentation Satoshi Ohtani Research Fellow, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Tokyo, Japan [email protected] Summary In 177 AD, the persecution of Christians in Lugdunum increased. The sole extant account of this persecution is a letter preserved in Eusebius’s Ecclesiastical History. However, because of his daring excerpting and muddled terminology, the understanding of the situation of martyrs and confessors of Lugdunum is confusing. In addition, another source about the persecution, Collection of the Ancient Martyrs, was scattered. The pur- pose of this article is to organize the situation of the martyrs’ deaths and to validate how Eusebius recorded the martyrs and the confessors. For this purpose, I compared the fragments of the martyrs’ lists preserved in the Martyrology of Pseudo-Jerome, the Mar- tyrology bearing the name of Bede, several Passions, Glory of the Martyrs by Gregory of Tours, and Ecclesiastical History by Eusebius. Besides, I analyse the categories of martyrs in the reconstructed list of the martyrs of Lugdunum. As a result, it clarifies the way Eusebius constructed the list of martyrs. This article also contributes to the understand- ing of the terminology and documentation concerning martyrs and confessors in early Christian documents. Keywords Eusebius Ecclesiastical History – early Christian martyrs – Lugdunum 1 Introduction In this short paper, I address the Christian persecution that emerged in Lugdu- num in 177 AD. The sole surviving account of this persecution is a letter ISSN 1817-7530 (print version) ISSN 1817-7565 (online version) SCRI 1 © koninklijke brill nv, leiden, 2015 | doi 10.1163/18177565-00111p13DownloadedScrinium from Brill.com09/27/2021 11 (2015) 122-134 05:58:31PM via free access Patrologia Pacifica Quarta Martyrs And Confessors Of Lugdunum 123 preserved in Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History.

FEBRUARY 2013 FEAST DAYS Saturday, February 2 — Presentation of the Lord This feast commemorates Mary’s purification and the presentation of Jesus in the temple. In the Middle Ages, a tradition began of blessing candles and holding a procession of light on this day. As a result it is also known as “Candlemas”— Christ our light has come to us. We also remember the first members of the Bordeaux Sodality who made their first act of consecration on Feb. 2, 1801. Wednesday, February 6 — Saint Paul Miki and Companions In the late 16th century, 26 martyrs of Japan were crucified on a hill. Brother Paul Miki, a Jesuit scholastic, is the best known among these martyrs. When missionaries returned to Japan in the 1860s, at first they found no trace of Christianity. But after establishing themselves they found that thousands of Christians lived around Nagasaki and had secretly preserved the faith. Beatified in 1627, the martyrs of Japan were canonized in 1862. Friday, February 8 — Saint Josephine Bakhita Josephine was born around 1869 in Sudan and raised in the Islamic faith. She was kidnapped as a child by slave traders who gave her the name “Bakhita,” meaning “lucky one.” She was purchased by an Italian consul who brought her to Italy. There she lived with the Canossian Sisters in Venice and was formally introduced to the faith, baptized, and eventually granted her freedom. In 1896 she joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity. She died in 1947. Pope John Paul II canonized this first Sudanese saint in October 2000. Monday, February 11 — Our Lady of Lourdes This memorial honors the mystery of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

This included a secondary and popular aspect, which left its mark on Japanese clothing and gastronomy in a manner that is still visible even today. It also included the transmission of tech- nologies and a certain number of objects that, in a limited way, influenced the commercial and creative activities of the Japanese. However, there is no doubt that the most important aspect of this encounter between these two cultures was the transmission of a new vision of the cosmos that was totally novel to the Japanese, a process that was realized by the missionaries. This vision of the cosmos consisted of two completely different but inseparable elements that, to use a metaphor of that period, were like a lady and her housekeeper: the religious component was represented by Christianity and the scientific element consisted of natural Aristotelian thought and Ptolemaic astronomical theory.

Johannes Laures, the well-known Jesuit au thority on the Catholic Mission in Japan, has here re-created in all of its splendor the long, bitter and bloody battle of this first Christian Church. From its beginnings to its present eminence Father Laures has traced this. hitherto confusing history, pausing now and again to create for the reader the personality of a great Christian leader or a notable Japanese daimyo. This work, scholarly without being dull, fast reading without being light, is a history of the History greatest importance to all tho_se interested in Japan. The views expressed here are those of the author(s). Opening the Fifth Seal Catholic Martyrs and Forces of Religious Competition Rachel M. McCleary and Robert J. Barro Jorge Mario Bergoglio, since becoming Pope Francis in March 2013, is focusing on martyrdom in the Roman Catholic Church. Two months into his pontificate, Francis canonized the 813 martyrs of Otranto, the largest such group in recorded Catholic Church history. Five months later, Francis beatified another large group, 499 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. Francis continues to emphasize martyrs over confessors, the name given to blessed persons who died of natural causes. In 2019, Francis beatified 39 martyrs and only 6 confessors. As a snapshot of what is happening, within the last four years, 14 persons who died in Guatemala have qualified as blessed martyrs; six were foreign missionaries who served in Guatemala and eight were national lay persons, including one child.1 The missionaries were Oklahoma priest Stanley Rother, the first U.S. born martyr beatified by the Catholic Church, three Missionaries of the Sacred Heart priests, a priest of the Order of Friars Minor, and James Miller, of the De La Salle Brothers of the Christian Schools and the last Vatican beatification for 2019.

  • The Paintings in the Church of the Gesù Depicting Japanese Martyrdoms
The Relation between Justice and Martyrdoms in Religious Art: The Paintings in the Church of the Gesù depicting Japanese Martyrdoms José Blanco-Perales, Universidad de Oviedo, Spain The Asian Conference on Arts & Humanities 2016 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract In this article I explore the understanding of the concept of martyrdom in the context of the Christian mission in Japan in the 17th c. To that end, I will discuss a painting representing the executions of Nagasaki in September 1622, patrimony of the Church of the Gesù in Rome, and the historical accounts referring this event. Other depictions of Japanese martyrdoms focus their representation solely on the martyrs and their deeds. In this painting, however, the Christian audience observing the execution also draws the attention of the viewer, since its detailed depiction takes one third of the pictorial space. I will argue that this difference between this painting and other images reflects the various attitudes clergymen in Japan had towards martyrdom, as the analysis of the accounts of this event reveals: the friars of that mission considered the martyrdom not an end in itself but a mean for the evangelism of Japan. Keywords: Japan, Jesuits, Nagasaki, Christian martyrdoms, religious art, 17th c. iafor The International Academic Forum www.iafor.org Introduction On September 10th, 1622, the Japanese authorities executed fifty-five Christians in Nagasaki, thirty of whom were beheaded and twenty-five died in the bonfire. From this twenty-five, nine were priests, eight European and one Japanese, and twelve were Japanese friars, all of them members of the Jesuits, Franciscans and Dominicans.
