St. Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic Parish Community “Where Earth meets Heaven” Our Mission Statement As a welcoming community, we celebrate our life, conscious of our multi-ethnic traditions, vowing unity with Christ in our multi-cultural differences. We usher in our lives (being evangelized) and proclaim (as evangelizers) the reign of God as Priests, Prophets and Kings, and in so doing, we celebrate our discipleship in Christ Jesus. We extol “being Church” through the formation of Small Faith Communities as a way of life in being priests, prophets and kings; thus, we become economically stable and self-reliant as we give special attention and solicitude to our youth and the needy. “They were faithful to the teaching of the apostles, the common life of sharing, the breaking of bread and the prayers.” (Acts 2:42) Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 14, 2018 The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword. -- Hebrews 4:12a Read the Word of God daily… RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) RCIA prepares adults to receive one or more of the Sacraments of Initiation. The Sacraments of Initiation are Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist [Communion]. RCIA also prepares adult to be received into the Catholic Church if they have been baptized in another Christian church. If a person was baptized as a Catholic but never received First Eucharist and/or Confirmation, they can also be a part of the RCIA. We are inviting parishioners who are fully initiated members of our parish to become involved in the RCIA as sponsors. This is a great way to grow in your faith. Please also contact Bob Kondrath if you would like to participate as a sponsor. RCIA sessions meet every Sunday starting with attending the Liturgy of the Word at the 10.30 am Mass. If you, or someone you know, are interested in becoming a fully initiated member of the Catholic Church, please contact Bob Kondrath at the parish office at (909) 595- 9545 or email [email protected]. Giovanni Battista Montini was born near Brescia in northern Italy on Sept. 26, 1897, the second of three sons. In 1954, Father Mortini was names Archbishop of Milan and became the first of 23 Cardi- nals named by Pope John XXIII in 1958. He wrote seven papal encyclicals, includ- ing Humanae Vitae, which expounded on the value and dignity of human life and, more controversially, reaffirmed the Church’s ban on contraconception. Pope Paul VI died on August 6, 1978. He was beatified by Pope Francis on October 19, Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez was born into a large family on August 15, 1917 in the small town of Ciudad Barrios, El Salvador. He entered the seminary at age fourteen and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of San Salva- dor in 1942. Recognizing the power of radio, his Sunday sermons were broadcast to peasant farmers who taught they were unwelcome in the churches. In 1977, he was the surprising choice to be the new Archbishop of San Salvador. From his cathedral pulpit Archbishop Romero became the voice of the voiceless poor. He continued to use the radio broadcast of his Sunday homilies to tell people what was happening throughout the country, to talk about the role of the church, and to offer his listeners hope. Soon, the Archbishop became the target of the Salvadoran government’s anger. On March 24, 1980, he was gunned down by an unknown assassin while celebrating Mass in a small hospital chapel. Only moments before his death, Romero had spoken these prophetic words: “Those who surrender to the service of the poor through love of Christ will live like the grain of wheat that dies...The harvest comes because of the grain that dies.” Pope John Paul bestowed upon him the title of “Servant of God”. In Feb 2015, Pope Francis declared Archbishop Ro- mero a martyr. The Church formally beatified him on May 23, 2015, and he was canonized on October 14, 2018. DIACONATE CORNER Many people don’t know exactly what deacons are or how they fit into the Church. This article provides five reasons why we need permanent deacons in the Church right now, but before we do that let’s look at the dif- ferences between transitional and permanent deacons and the three degrees of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Transitional Versus Permanent Deacons Transitional deacons are seminarians in training to become priests. Hence, their intent is to eventually receive the next degree of Holy Orders after they are ordained deacons. Permanent deacons are men, usually married, whose intent is to receive only the first degree of Holy Orders, that of the diaconate. The Sacrament and rite of ordination for all deacons, whether transitional or permanent, is the same, except for the vow of celibacy which married men do not recite during the ordination ceremony.
