LORENZO RUIZ Thurs. Oct. 18, 2018 4:30-9:00 pm Fri. Oct. 19, 2018 4:30-9:00 pm Sat. Oct. 20, 2018 9:30-2:30 pm Concelebrated Mass presided by His Excellency, The Most Reverend David O’Connell, D.D. St. Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic Parish Community “Where Earth meets Heaven” Our Mission Statement As a welcoming community, we celebrate our life, conscious of our multi-ethnic traditions, vowing unity with Christ in our multi-cultural differences. We usher in our lives (being evangelized) and proclaim (as evangelizers) the reign of God as Priests, Prophets and Kings, and in so doing, we celebrate our discipleship in Christ Jesus. We extol “being Church” through the formation of Small Faith Communities as a way of life in being priests, prophets and kings; thus, we become economically stable and self-reliant as we give special attention and solicitude to our youth and the needy. “They were faithful to the teaching of the apostles, the common life of sharing, the breaking of bread and the prayers.” (Acts 2:42) Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 14, 2018 The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword. -- Hebrews 4:12a Read the Word of God daily… RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) RCIA prepares adults to receive one or more of the Sacraments of Initiation. The Sacraments of Initiation are Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist [Communion]. RCIA also prepares adult to be received into the Catholic Church if they have been baptized in another Christian church. If a person was baptized as a Catholic but never received First Eucharist and/or Confirmation, they can also be a part of the RCIA. We are inviting parishioners who are fully initiated members of our parish to become involved in the RCIA as sponsors. This is a great way to grow in your faith. Please also contact Bob Kondrath if you would like to participate as a sponsor. RCIA sessions meet every Sunday starting with attending the Liturgy of the Word at the 10.30 am Mass. If you, or someone you know, are interested in becoming a fully initiated member of the Catholic Church, please contact Bob Kondrath at the parish office at (909) 595- 9545 or email [email protected]. Giovanni Battista Montini was born near Brescia in northern Italy on Sept. 26, 1897, the second of three sons. In 1954, Father Mortini was names Archbishop of Milan and became the first of 23 Cardi- nals named by Pope John XXIII in 1958. He wrote seven papal encyclicals, includ- ing Humanae Vitae, which expounded on the value and dignity of human life and, more controversially, reaffirmed the Church’s ban on contraconception. Pope Paul VI died on August 6, 1978. He was beatified by Pope Francis on October 19, Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez was born into a large family on August 15, 1917 in the small town of Ciudad Barrios, El Salvador. He entered the seminary at age fourteen and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of San Salva- dor in 1942. Recognizing the power of radio, his Sunday sermons were broadcast to peasant farmers who taught they were unwelcome in the churches. In 1977, he was the surprising choice to be the new Archbishop of San Salvador. From his cathedral pulpit Archbishop Romero became the voice of the voiceless poor. He continued to use the radio broadcast of his Sunday homilies to tell people what was happening throughout the country, to talk about the role of the church, and to offer his listeners hope. Soon, the Archbishop became the target of the Salvadoran government’s anger. On March 24, 1980, he was gunned down by an unknown assassin while celebrating Mass in a small hospital chapel. Only moments before his death, Romero had spoken these prophetic words: “Those who surrender to the service of the poor through love of Christ will live like the grain of wheat that dies...The harvest comes because of the grain that dies.” Pope John Paul bestowed upon him the title of “Servant of God”. In Feb 2015, Pope Francis declared Archbishop Ro- mero a martyr. The Church formally beatified him on May 23, 2015, and he was canonized on October 14, 2018. DIACONATE CORNER Many people don’t know exactly what deacons are or how they fit into the Church. This article provides five reasons why we need permanent deacons in the Church right now, but before we do that let’s look at the dif- ferences between transitional and permanent deacons and the three degrees of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Transitional Versus Permanent Deacons Transitional deacons are seminarians in training to become priests. Hence, their intent is to eventually receive the next degree of Holy Orders after they are ordained deacons. Permanent deacons are men, usually married, whose intent is to receive only the first degree of Holy Orders, that of the diaconate. The Sacrament and rite of ordination for all deacons, whether transitional or permanent, is the same, except for the vow of celibacy which married men do not recite during the ordination ceremony. • Martyrs and Confessors of Lugdunum: a Validation of Eusebius’S Documentation
122 Scrinium 11 (2015) 122-134 Ohtani Journal of Patrology and Critical Hagiography www.brill.com/scri Martyrs and Confessors of Lugdunum: A Validation of Eusebius’s Documentation Satoshi Ohtani Research Fellow, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Tokyo, Japan [email protected] Summary In 177 AD, the persecution of Christians in Lugdunum increased. The sole extant account of this persecution is a letter preserved in Eusebius’s Ecclesiastical History. However, because of his daring excerpting and muddled terminology, the understanding of the situation of martyrs and confessors of Lugdunum is confusing. In addition, another source about the persecution, Collection of the Ancient Martyrs, was scattered. The pur- pose of this article is to organize the situation of the martyrs’ deaths and to validate how Eusebius recorded the martyrs and the confessors. For this purpose, I compared the fragments of the martyrs’ lists preserved in the Martyrology of Pseudo-Jerome, the Mar- tyrology bearing the name of Bede, several Passions, Glory of the Martyrs by Gregory of Tours, and Ecclesiastical History by Eusebius. Besides, I analyse the categories of martyrs in the reconstructed list of the martyrs of Lugdunum. As a result, it clarifies the way Eusebius constructed the list of martyrs. This article also contributes to the understand- ing of the terminology and documentation concerning martyrs and confessors in early Christian documents. Keywords Eusebius Ecclesiastical History – early Christian martyrs – Lugdunum 1 Introduction In this short paper, I address the Christian persecution that emerged in Lugdu- num in 177 AD. FEBRUARY 2013 FEAST DAYS Saturday, February 2 — Presentation of the Lord This feast commemorates Mary’s purification and the presentation of Jesus in the temple. In the Middle Ages, a tradition began of blessing candles and holding a procession of light on this day. As a result it is also known as “Candlemas”— Christ our light has come to us. We also remember the first members of the Bordeaux Sodality who made their first act of consecration on Feb. 2, 1801. Wednesday, February 6 — Saint Paul Miki and Companions In the late 16th century, 26 martyrs of Japan were crucified on a hill. Brother Paul Miki, a Jesuit scholastic, is the best known among these martyrs. When missionaries returned to Japan in the 1860s, at first they found no trace of Christianity. But after establishing themselves they found that thousands of Christians lived around Nagasaki and had secretly preserved the faith. Beatified in 1627, the martyrs of Japan were canonized in 1862. Friday, February 8 — Saint Josephine Bakhita Josephine was born around 1869 in Sudan and raised in the Islamic faith. She was kidnapped as a child by slave traders who gave her the name “Bakhita,” meaning “lucky one.” She was purchased by an Italian consul who brought her to Italy. There she lived with the Canossian Sisters in Venice and was formally introduced to the faith, baptized, and eventually granted her freedom. In 1896 she joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity. She died in 1947. Pope John Paul II canonized this first Sudanese saint in October 2000. Monday, February 11 — Our Lady of Lourdes This memorial honors the mystery of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

This included a secondary and popular aspect, which left its mark on Japanese clothing and gastronomy in a manner that is still visible even today. It also included the transmission of tech- nologies and a certain number of objects that, in a limited way, influenced the commercial and creative activities of the Japanese. However, there is no doubt that the most important aspect of this encounter between these two cultures was the transmission of a new vision of the cosmos that was totally novel to the Japanese, a process that was realized by the missionaries. This vision of the cosmos consisted of two completely different but inseparable elements that, to use a metaphor of that period, were like a lady and her housekeeper: the religious component was represented by Christianity and the scientific element consisted of natural Aristotelian thought and Ptolemaic astronomical theory.

From its beginnings to its present eminence Father Laures has traced this. hitherto confusing history, pausing now and again to create for the reader the personality of a great Christian leader or a notable Japanese daimyo. Barro Jorge Mario Bergoglio, since becoming Pope Francis in March 2013, is focusing on martyrdom in the Roman Catholic Church. Two months into his pontificate, Francis canonized the 813 martyrs of Otranto, the largest such group in recorded Catholic Church history. Five months later, Francis beatified another large group, 499 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. Francis continues to emphasize martyrs over confessors, the name given to blessed persons who died of natural causes. In 2019, Francis beatified 39 martyrs and only 6 confessors. As a snapshot of what is happening, within the last four years, 14 persons who died in Guatemala have qualified as blessed martyrs; six were foreign missionaries who served in Guatemala and eight were national lay persons, including one child.1 The missionaries were Oklahoma priest Stanley Rother, the first U.S. born martyr beatified by the Catholic Church, three Missionaries of the Sacred Heart priests, a priest of the Order of Friars Minor, and James Miller, of the De La Salle Brothers of the Christian Schools and the last Vatican beatification for 2019.

  • The Paintings in the Church of the Gesù Depicting Japanese Martyrdoms
The Relation between Justice and Martyrdoms in Religious Art: The Paintings in the Church of the Gesù depicting Japanese Martyrdoms José Blanco-Perales, Universidad de Oviedo, Spain The Asian Conference on Arts & Humanities 2016 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract In this article I explore the understanding of the concept of martyrdom in the context of the Christian mission in Japan in the 17th c. To that end, I will discuss a painting representing the executions of Nagasaki in September 1622, patrimony of the Church of the Gesù in Rome, and the historical accounts referring this event. Other depictions of Japanese martyrdoms focus their representation solely on the martyrs and their deeds. In this painting, however, the Christian audience observing the execution also draws the attention of the viewer, since its detailed depiction takes one third of the pictorial space. I will argue that this difference between this painting and other images reflects the various attitudes clergymen in Japan had towards martyrdom, as the analysis of the accounts of this event reveals: the friars of that mission considered the martyrdom not an end in itself but a mean for the evangelism of Japan. Keywords: Japan, Jesuits, Nagasaki, Christian martyrdoms, religious art, 17th c. iafor The International Academic Forum www.iafor.org Introduction On September 10th, 1622, the Japanese authorities executed fifty-five Christians in Nagasaki, thirty of whom were beheaded and twenty-five died in the bonfire. From this twenty-five, nine were priests, eight European and one Japanese, and twelve were Japanese friars, all of them members of the Jesuits, Franciscans and Dominicans.
