There arc countless renowned examples of stillllle and flowerpieces, interiors and garden scene works which had their origin in the familiar humble contents of the artist's home or a cherished garden. The Robert McDougall Art Gallery's collection is rich in images of the home and garden from the European traditions of art practice. It is the intention of this exhibition to share these, and those on loan from other sources, with the Canterbury public as the summer exhibition of 1991-92. John Coley INTRODUCTION This exhibition highlights the imagery that has developed around the themes of the home and garden over the last two hundred years in New Zealand. Historically, artists in New Zealand, both amateur and professional, have frequently explored subjects relating to their home environment. The European recording of such subjects originated with the artists and scientists who were on board the early explorer ships in the late eighteenth century. Of special interest in this exhibition is a selection of works from Banks's Florilegium, a set of engravings made after the work of Sydney Parkinson (1745-1771) who was on board Captain James Cook's Hrst voyage to New Zealand in 1769-1771. The fascination with botanical art continued well into the nineteenth century and such artists as Margaret Stoddart and Fanny Bertha Good are represented in IMAGES OF HOME M'D GARDE.'l. As the pioneers established their homes and their gardens, artists began to respond to this and make it the subject of their drawings, photographs, and paintings. Ordered gardens were a favourite with Victorians and these can be seen in the work of such artists as James Preston and George O'Brien. Throughout the tw"entieth century, and perhaps more specifically the 19205 and 1930s, artists pursued the garden theme thoroughly, whether independently or in conjunction with figures or other objects. During the last one hundred and fifty years of New Zealand painting, the domestic interior has been used constantly as a subject by artists. Often an accessory, the interior has formed a support to portraiture, to the still-life, or has become an adjunct to other painting subjects. Interpretations have differed accordingly and the works in IMACES OF HOME AND GARDEN range in size, media, and stylistic treatment. A small group of works by non-New Zealand artists included in this exhibition show that there has been a long tradition of the use of the interior as a subject in Western art. Married and a mother to three early in her painting career, the stifling gendered society of 1950s and 1960s New Zealand saw Fahey adopt unconventional colour, technique, and subject matter to reflect and actively challenge the status quo of the gender divide. Yet embedded in the artist’s pugnacious approach is a great level of affection for the women and relationships portrayed, evident in the careful detail bestowed on traditionally ‘female’ interests – clothing, interior textiles, bouquets- elevating the decorative female space above the austere settings more familiar to portraiture. Her distinctive painting style is recognisable for a raucous use of colour, with often haphazard use of perspectival space to force the viewer into the claustrophobia of the female experience. You can hear Fahey’s paintings. Expertly realised portraits are candid in their expressions – characters are shown mouth open, mid argument, or gazing off absentmindedly into the distance. Glimpses of TV sets, record players, and radios are combined with closely observed wine glasses, cups of tea, and bottles of gin. The clamour of crockery and conversation rings through the paintings and spills out into our space as they do into the painted gardens visible through open windows. Later bodies of work see Fahey applying her distinctive flare to urban environments and urban characters; translating domestic politics to their manifestation in the public environment. Born in Timaru in 1929, Fahey began her painting education in earnest at sixteen, at the Canterbury College School of Art, now Ilam.

With your back to the A283 walk up New Road to Combe Lane, cross over and proceed ahead to Witley station. Proceed to the top of the station car park and take the public footpath over the railway line and continue ahead over a cross roads. When the footpath meets a road turn left. Redlands is on your left. Arthur Melville RWS, ARSA (1855-1904) rented the house from his friend Walford Graham Robertson. The Studio is next to Redlands.

[Ships and Planes – Paintings for Children] 1944 Ink, pen, watercolour on paper Private Collection, Wellington Colin McCahon met fellow artist Anne Hamblett in 1937 while both studying at the Dunedin School of Art. The couple married on 21 September 1942 and went on to have four children. In the mid-1940s, Anne began a sixteen-year long career as an illustrator, often illustrating children’s books, such as At the Beach by Aileen Findlay, published in 1943. During this time, the McCahons collaborated on the series known as Paintings for Children. This would be the first and only time the couple would produce work together. The subject-matter was divided among the two, Colin was responsible for the landscape, while Anne filled each scene with bustling activity, including buildings, trains, ships, cars and people. These works were exhibited at Dunedin’s Modern Books, a co-operative book shop, in November 1945. This exhibition received positive praise from an Art New Zealand reviewer, who said: “These pictures are the purest fun: red trains rushing into and out from tunnels, through round green hills, and over viaducts against clear blue skies; bright ships queuing up for passage through amazing canals or diligently unloading at detailed wharves, people and horses and aeroplanes overhead all very serious and busy… They will be lucky children indeed who get these pictures – too lucky perhaps because the pictures should be turned into picture books and then every good child might have the lot.” 1 Two years later, in 1947, a group of Colin McCahon’s new paintings were also exhibited at Modern Books.
