    New Zealand Painting 1 f g. • w w. H i 1 New Zealand Painting Since 1957 the Auckland City Art Gallery has assembled an annual anthology of contemporary New Zealand painting. These exhibitions have particular objectives: to gather from all parts of the country the work of thinking artists being painters who are not content to continue year after year with an adopted formula and repeating this ad nauseum, nor those who switch styles as easily and frequently as a man changes his coat; but rather, the artists who think about painting and consider it a vital means of communicating ideas. And not so much other people's ideas (although all sensitive painters are aware of their debt to history and the work of other creative artists) but, the deeply felt and thought-out ideas of the artist's personal responses to the world. This approach to painting calls for tenacity of thought and quite a bit of courage. Consequently, it is surely the duty of a public art gallery to foster these vital and thinking artists within our national life. To encourage their development and growth for the national good — if for no other reason. These exhibitions are then offered as travelling units. Galleries accepting the exhibition share the cost of touring. As these costs are steadily rising and no grant-in-aid is involved, organizations presenting this exhibition will need to exert even greater efforts to ensure the continuance of the exhibition on a travelling basis. Here is a visible demonstration of some of the current trends and movements in New Zealand painting.

There was a special package on this train, a painting that my parents had bought and I recall the ceremony of unwrapping and Mum and Dad’s obvious delight, but being completely perplexed by this ‘artwork’. Now I look at the Woollaston watercolour and think how farsighted they were. Dad’s love of art was fostered at Auckland University through meeting Diane McKegg (nee Henderson), the daughter of Louise Henderson. As a student he subsequently bought his first painting from Louise, an oil on paper, Rooftops Newmarket. After marrying Beverley South, their mutual interest in the arts ensured the collection’s growth. They visited exhibitions in the Waikato and Auckland and because Mother was a soprano soloist, and a member of the Hamilton Civic Bev and Murray Gow Choir, concert trips to Auckland, Tauranga, New Plymouth, Gisborne and other centres were in their Orakei home involved.

    NUMBER 58 Quarterly AUCKLAND CITY ART GALLERY Quarterly AUCKLAND CITY ART GALLERY NUMBER 58 Some recently-acquired drawings by Frances Hodgkins The drawings by Frances Hodgkins acquired in the past three years form an interesting addition to the Gallery's large and varied collection of her work. They include examples of still life, landscape, and portraiture; they are in several of her favourite media; and, though all are undated, they seem to range through three or four decades of her career. First in chronological sequence - and the earliest Frances Hodgkins in the Gallery - is the watercolour George. It is a good specimen of the informal portraits which she produced in large numbers and apparently with little effort during the later Dunedin years. Since it bears no signature or date, the probability is that it was never shown in public. The title and the initials F.M.H. are in the handwriting of the artist's sister, Mrs Field. The watercolour remained in Mrs. Field's possession until inherited by her daughter, the late Mrs Pharazyn, from whose estate it passed, through a local dealer, to the Gallery. I have been unable to FRANCES HODGKINS Qeorge trace this particular George in the family Watercolour, 16 x 12 inches correspondence, but Mrs Field's annotations (Ace. 1972/2). are usually accurate and he may yet be identified as a member of the vast Hodgkins circle of Cover friends and relatives.     A Matter of Passion Marilyn Rea-Menzies What drives your need to seek out learning experiences? I have always had the need to be the very best that I could possibly be, and as I am self-taught I have always motivated myself to learn about other artists mainly through reading about them, visiting art galleries wherever possible to see original art works, and also through attending exhibition openings. I became quite an exhibition opening “junkie”. I am a bit of a “bookaholic” and love art books. Any spare money that I may have is often spent on books about artists working in many different mediums, and over the years, I have built up quite a collection in my library. Some of the artists who have influenced my work are New Zealand artists Colin McCahon, Louise Henderson, and John Weeks, and international artists Chuck Close, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and David Hockney. When I came to Christchurch to live in 1994, I decided that I would try to develop my reputation as an artist as well as that of a weaver. I was known as a tapestry weaver in many circles and it is often a surprise to people when they discover that I also work in a number of other mediums such as photography, painting, drawing, and digital design. I believe that my skills as a painter and photographer, as well as my drawing abilities, inter-relate closely with my weaving; they are inseparable. To be a successful tapestry weaver I realised that I needed to keep on developing my proficiency in drawing and painting.
