    How Can a Modern History of the Basque Country Make Sense? on Nation, Identity, and Territories in the Making of Spain

    HOW CAN A MODERN HISTORY OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY MAKE SENSE? ON NATION, IDENTITY, AND TERRITORIES IN THE MAKING OF SPAIN JOSE M. PORTILLO VALDES Universidad del Pais Vasco Center for Basque Studies, University of Nevada (Reno) One of the more recurrent debates among Basque historians has to do with the very object of their primary concern. Since a Basque political body, real or imagined, has never existed before the end of the nineteenth century -and formally not until 1936- an «essentialist» question has permanently been hanging around the mind of any Basque historian: she might be writing the histo- ry of an non-existent subject. On the other hand, the heaviness of the «national dispute» between Basque and Spanish identities in the Spanish Basque territories has deeply determined the mean- ing of such a cardinal question. Denying the «other's» historicity is a very well known weapon in the hands of any nationalist dis- course and, conversely, claiming to have a millenary past behind one's shoulders, or being the bearer of a single people's history, is a must for any «national» history. Consequently, for those who consider the Spanish one as the true national identity and the Basque one just a secondary «decoration», the history of the Basque Country simply does not exist or it refers to the last six decades. On the other hand, for those Basques who deem the Spanish an imposed identity, Basque history is a sacred territory, the last refuge for the true identity. Although apparently uncontaminated by politics, Basque aca- demic historiography gently reproduces discourses based on na- - 53 - ESPANA CONTEMPORANEA tionalist assumptions.

The focus will be centered on how it is used in different ways in the different kingdoms (Castile, Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, Portugal and the Basque Provinces and Navarre) and what the authors are trying to achieve through this. Results show that while Castilian authors try to prove Spanish antiquity with the Tubal settlement, in other kingdom, especially in Catalonia, Portugal and Navarre there is a more regional use of the myth. Most of these authors try to prove that their own kingdom is the territory where Tubal settled, which would give a pre-eminence of antiquity to it in comparison to the other Iberian territories. Introduction Myths have always played an outstanding part in human history and they are without any doubt much older than science. This is also valid for chronicles or historiographical works. Christian historians in particular broke up the division between myth and history, which had been established by classical historiography.1 Only pagan stories remained myths, while the Bible gained the recognition of true history.2 Early Modern chronicles from the Iberian Peninsula are no exception to this phenomenon.

    Valentina Bilbao CURRICULUM CURRICULUM 2 Valentina Bilbao is a visual artist, born in Caracas, Venezuela. She discovered her love of painting, drawing, and poetry at a young age. She dedicated herself to learning new techniques that allowed her to further develop her artistic skills. She felt the need to convey her knowledge, so she created the Drawing and Painting Workshop “Pinceladas”, which had children and youth of different ages. Valentina continued to dabble in art and received more training at the School of Visual Arts, while at the same time she studied Psychology. Her artwork captures a full and complete expression of emotions such as joy, passion and love with spontaneity, energy, and strength through a wide range of colors, textures, shapes, and figures, making all of her artwork comprehensive and rich in content. In addition, her artwork has balance and harmony, which is the result of all the elements in the right proportions coming alive and containing a constant motion. Color is the main character of her work, which all other elements are combined. This technique is the result of admiration, and study of the different movements of art, which shows an extraordinary capacity for synthesis and integration. CURRICULUM 3 My paintings carry a message of love, energy, bliss, absolute dedication, and passion. My artistic process is reflected onto my artwork through My passion for life inspires me to bring positive emotions music. Music becomes my air. Music is my energy and I and thoughts together in my work. Through each stroke of capture that energy in my work.

Benzocaine (BZ), butamben (BTN) and isobutamben (BTI) are local anesthetics characterized by a hydrophilic head a and a lipophilic aliphatic tail linked by an aminobenzoate group. Previous rotational work on BZ (H2N-C6H4-COO-Et) showed that its ethyl aliphatic tail may adopt either in-plane (trans) or out of plane (gauche) conformations, with a low interconversion barrier below 50 cm−1.b Here we extend the rotational study to BTN and BTI, isolated in a supersonic jet expansion and vaporized either by heating or UV ps-laser ablation methods. Both molecules share a 14 heavy-atoms skeleton, differing in their butyl (-(CH2)3-CH3) or isobutyl (-CH2-CH(CH3)2) four-carbon tail. We detected a single conformer for BTN and two conformers for BTI. The two molecules do not adopt an all-trans carbon skeleton. Conversely, the β-ethyl carbon in BTN is gauche. For BTI the β-carbon may be either trans or gauche. The microwave spectrum covered the cm- (BTN, BTI, 6-18 GHz) and mm-wave (BTW, 50-75 GHz) frequency ranges.In all the cases, rotational and centrifugal distortion constants as well as the diagonal elements of the 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling tensor were accurate determined and compared to the theoretical results (ab initio and DFT).
