Abstract Language is one of the most significant aspects of cultural identity. This thesis examines the evidence of languages in contact in Roman Britain in order to determine the role that language played in defining the identities of the inhabitants of this Roman province. All forms of documentary evidence from monumental stone epigraphy to ownership marks scratched onto pottery are analyzed for indications of bilingualism and language contact in Roman Britain. The language and subject matter of the Vindolanda writing tablets from a Roman army fort on the northern frontier are analyzed for indications of bilingual interactions between Roman soldiers and their native surroundings, as well as Celtic interference on the Latin that was written and spoken by the Roman army. -

CILICIA: THE FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCHES IN ANATOLIA1 Mark Wilson Summary This article explores the origin of the Christian church in Anatolia. While individual believers undoubtedly entered Anatolia during the 30s after the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:9–10), the book of Acts suggests that it was not until the following decade that the first church was organized. For it was at Antioch, the capital of the Roman province of Syria, that the first Christians appeared (Acts 11:20–26). Yet two obscure references in Acts point to the organization of churches in Cilicia at an earlier date. Among the addressees of the letter drafted by the Jerusalem council were the churches in Cilicia (Acts 15:23). Later Paul visited these same churches at the beginning of his second ministry journey (Acts 15:41). Paul’s relationship to these churches points to this apostle as their founder. Since his home was the Cilician city of Tarsus, to which he returned after his conversion (Gal. 1:21; Acts 9:30), Paul was apparently active in church planting during his so-called ‘silent years’. The core of these churches undoubtedly consisted of Diaspora Jews who, like Paul’s family, lived in the region. Jews from Cilicia were members of a Synagogue of the Freedmen in Jerusalem, to which Paul was associated during his time in Jerusalem (Acts 6:9). Antiochus IV (175–164 BC) hellenized and urbanized Cilicia during his reign; the Romans around 39 BC added Cilicia Pedias to the province of Syria. Four cities along with Tarsus, located along or near the Pilgrim Road that transects Anatolia, constitute the most likely sites for the Cilician churches. -

Civis Romanus Sum Citizenship in Ancient Rome was valued not only for the rights and social status it provided, but also for the sense of patriotism and honor it instilled in the Roman people. The gravity of citizenship allowed the Roman Empire’s multitudinous regions to become vastly and impossibly connected by a sense of pride for one Italian city. Citizenship was a commodity valuable enough for soldiers such as Mucius Scaevola to give their right hands for, as well as for plebeians to secede and fight for with their lives. Citizens felt an unbreakable bond between themselves and their nation; they were dedicated to representing and defending Rome at any cost. It was this strong sense of identity that united so many people and created such a dominant empire. Roman citizenship was one of the most prized possessions a European inhabitant could have, bearing the magnitude of rights, ranking, honor, and a powerful sense of Roman identity. Although some Roman people were born into citizenship, the rest of the population yearned for such rights and status, and took whatever action they could to become true, legal members of Roman society. Citizenship included suffrage, the right to run for and occupy office, the right to not be tortured, crucified, or be sentenced to death unless found guilty of treason, the right to marry, to hold property, and to have a trial, as well as various “public” and “private” prerogatives. Romans born into a noble family inherited citizenship and social status; they made up the patrician class, while the lower plebeian class was made up of free non-citizens. -

Augustine and the Art of Ruling in the Carolingian Imperial Period This volume is an investigation of how Augustine was received in the Carolingian period, and the elements of his thought which had an impact on Carolingian ideas of ‘state’, rulership and ethics. It focuses on Alcuin of York and Hincmar of Rheims, authors and political advisers to Charlemagne and to Charles the Bald, respectively. It examines how they used Augustinian political thought and ethics, as manifested in the De civitate Dei, to give more weight to their advice. A comparative approach sheds light on the differences between Charlemagne’s reign and that of his grandson. It scrutinizes Alcuin’s and Hincmar’s discussions of empire, rulership and the moral conduct of political agents during which both drew on the De civitate Dei, although each came away with a different understanding. By means of a philological–historical approach, the book offers a deeper reading and treats the Latin texts as political discourses defined by content and language. Sophia Moesch is currently an SNSF-funded postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford, working on a project entitled ‘Developing Principles of Good Govern- ance: Latin and Greek Political Advice during the Carolingian and Macedonian Reforms’. Morrison was wrong Taylor Putnam, 2016 Political Theory Research Workshop University of Toronto Working paper - please do not cite or circulate This paper draws primarily from material I intend to use in the introduction and first chapter of my dissertation, the latter of which will provide a more extensive account of Ciceronian humanitas against the backdrop of the waning Roman Republic. The larger dissertation project focuses on the concept of humanitas in the broader Roman context – traced through Cicero, Seneca the Younger, Tacitus, and Augustine - as a means to confront and challenge the modern understanding of “Humanity.” I greatly appreciate any and all feedback people are willing to share. Oh, my, get out of the way, please! It's burning and bursting into flames, and the - and it's falling on the mooring-mast and all the folks agree that this is terrible, this is one of the worst catastrophes in the world. […] It's–it's–it's the flames, […] oh, four- or five-hundred feet into the sky and it ... it's a terrific crash, ladies and gentlemen. Key Terms from Cicero in Utopia
Utopia: Key Terms from Cicero The connections between More and Cicero seem to be wide-ranging, as these notes on Latin terms from Utopia suggest. In Book 1 of Utopia, Thomas More “echoes [Cicero’s] On Duties almost word for word” and sets forth “one particular set of humanist beliefs – those of a ‘civic’ or Ciceronian humanism.”1 Even the main title of Utopia – De optimo reipublicae statu – echoes Cicero’s well- known2 De re publica. Major Ciceronian Terms in Utopia Princeps: “leading citizen”; used over twenty-five times in Book 1 – five times in the opening two paragraphs on page 156 of EW, but with different meanings. Consider what Raphael says about the ordinary as opposed to the true princeps; then compare with his own experiences with principes in perilous circumstances (158) and with princeps Morton (160ff). Respublica: “republic”; used over twenty times in Book 1. Raphael praises the Polylerites (165) as a republic comparable to that of the Romans, who were “expert in the art of governing [reipublicae]” (164/83). He says that the Polylerite republic is marked by humanitas (165/87), libertas or liberty (165/10), and felix or happiness (165/22). Utopia will also be called a respublica over forty times in Book 2. At the end of Book 1, Raphael remarks that More does not have a proper image (imago rei) of a true respublica (174/10). Humanitas: “fullness of humanity” or mature humanity ; see 165/87, 113/4, 163/25, 165/28-29, 201/17. Civis: “citizen”; More is interested in listening to Raphael’s advice about “soundly and wisely trained citizens” (159/3).3 Cicero explained to his brother, Quintus, that De re publica dealt with de optimo statu civitatis et de optimo cive (“the ideal constitution and the ideal citizen”)4; More describes his friend Peter Giles as an optimus civis at EW 157/14-34. -

The edition in general use, intended merely as a stopgap, is not based upon rigorous application of the stemmatic method (see § 10 of the Introduction), and the last commentary on the whole work, dating from 1881, was conceived for the needs and interests of a very different generation of readers, not to mention being written too early to take advantage of standard works on lexicography, prosopography, etc., that began appearing at the end of the nineteenth century.
