  • Number of Foreign Tourists 15,000,000
Final Report: "Developing the non-Muslim tourist destination for Muslim tourists: A case study of Akita Prefecture, Japan” (Nor Zafir Md Salleh) 1.0 Introduction Islamic Tourism is the type of tourism that adheres to the values of Islam (Al-Hamarneh and Steiner 2004). Although the definition of Islamic tourism looks rigid and confine to the values of Islam, the practice of Islamic tourism around the world is diversified and different from conservative Muslim countries to less conservative Muslim countries and non-Muslim countries. For example, in Saudi Arabia, Islamic tourism means doing tourism the Islamic way such as performing Hajj (Zamani-Farahani and Henderson 2009). In less conservative Muslim countries such as Malaysia, Islamic tourism is considered a tourism product by highlighting the values, history and culture as its unique selling proposition (Henderson 2003). Nonetheless, for non-Muslim countries, Islamic tourism activities are still at embryonic stage where the host countries are providing basic facilities such as Halal food, prayer room and qibla direction in hotel rooms to accommodate the needs of Muslim tourists (www.halalmediajapan.com). In short, there are three categories of Islamic Tourism such as Islamic Tourism for conservative, non-conservative and non-Muslim countries. Given the increasing trend of Muslim travelling worldwide, many of non-Muslim countries such as Japan embarks to provide a comfortable tourist experience for Muslim. The Muslim needs such as a proper place to pray and food have been provided to ensure the convenience of Muslim tourists. For example, at both Narita and Kansai International Airport, there are more prayer rooms being made available for Muslims and the popular Japanese food such as Udon and Ramen are certified Halal so that Muslim tourists could treasure Japanese food (www.halalmediajapan.com).

Faculty of International Resource Sciences, Akita University, 7. Faculty of Science, Kochi University Paleo-environmental histories at Lake Tazawa were presumed by diatom assemblages from two sediment cores at the center of the lake. Lake Tazawa (Tazawa-ko), Akita prefecture, northern Japan, is a caldera lake, and is the deepest lake in Japan (surface area: 25.8 m2, surface elevation: 249 m, max depth: 423.4 m). It was an oligotrophic and neutral lake until 1940. But two water tunnels were constructed in 1940 and very acidic hot spring water from Tamagawa Hot Spring flew into the lake. Therefore, the lake had become acidic. The lake acidification caused extinction of Oncorhynchus kawamurae (Kunimasu), a species of salmon endemic to Lake Tazawa. The neutralization plant was constructed in 1991, however water quality criteria (pH=6) has not yet been achieved. This study focused on the water environmental changes since 7000 years ago and influence of the lake acidification. In TZW15-1 core, Cyclostephanos tazawaensis and Discostella spp. were abundant in whole the core. These species are freshwater planktonic species and indicates the lake has been a freshwater lake in the past 7000 years.

  • Characteristics of Sio2, Al2o3, Fe2o3, Pb and As Contents of Sediment in Lake Tazawa, Akita Prefecture, Japan
NMCC ANNUAL REPORT 24 (2017) Characteristics of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Pb and As contents of sediment in Lake Tazawa, Akita Prefecture, Japan Takuya Ishiguro1, Daizo Ishiyama1 and Koichiro Sera2 1Graduate School of International Resource Sciences, Akita University 1-1 Gakuen-Machi, Tegata, Akita 010-8502, Japan 2Cyclotron Research Center, Iwate Medical University 348-58 Tomegamori, Takizawa, Iwate 020-0603, Japan Abstract Lake Tazawa that was formed as a caldera lake by volcanic activity around 1.7 Ma is deepest lake in Japan. In 1940, acidic river of Tama River was introduced to Lake Tazawa. As a result of acidification of lake water, all living things including Oncorhynchus Kawamurae “Kunimasu” in the lake were died. The purpose of this study is to clarify characteristics of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Pb and As contents of the sediment sample (TZW15-3, 2.8m in length). The sediment sample mainly consists of siltstone with intercalation of layers of very fine and fine sandstone, diatomite and tephra. In lower part of sediment sample from 280~190cm, lamination is distinct. On the other hand, the sample from 190~10cm, massive siltstone is dominant. Sediment from 10cm to top shows brown to reddish color, when the sediments were dried in air. Sediment samples in this part consist of unconsolidated silt with lack of diatomite. SiO2 content of sediments is high in layers of diatomite. Al2O3 and Fe2O3 contents of the sediments are high in layers of very fine and fine sandstones. Pb and As contents do not show distinct change from 280cm to 10cm. Sediment samples from 10cm to top show clearly higher Al2O3, Fe2O3, Pb and As contents.

Email: [email protected] Abstract Thirty-eight species of oligochaetes (Annelida, Clitellata) belonging to five families were recorded from profundal bottoms of 50 freshwater lakes on Japanese islands. They were mostly widely distributed species, and the composition of fauna is basically explained by the scheme of Timm (2012), with parallel replacement of European species. Oxygen, temperature and surrounding fauna could be main factors determining the profundal fauna in the lakes. The lumbriculids (Styloscolex japonicus, Yamaguchia toyensis and Lumbriculus variegatus), haplotaxids (Haplotaxis gordioides) and enchytraeids (Marionina klaskisharum) were restricted to several deep and oligotrophic lakes located in Hokkaido and northern Honshu, where Rhyacodrilus komarovi often accompanied them. Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri was the commonest species, occurring irrespective of the trophic status and bottom temperature of the lake. Tubifex tubifex also occurred in wide trophic scale, but it has never been found in shallow eutrophic lakes where the bottom temperature exceeds 15°C, where L. hoffmeisteri,
