Casino Jack and the United States of Money (Magnolia) Jack was a filmmaker, a distinguished lobbyist, an owner of Indian casinos and co-owner of a high-end restaurant in Washington, D.C. It sounds almost too good to be true, and naturally, it was. Jack seemingly had a lot going for him. However, it wasn’t easy for him to accomplish all that he did. L.A.UNDERGROUND PROHIBITION ROSE A Shot of Life BYGOF E F Rey ALTROCCHI

There was a period in our country’s history when selling and making alcohol was illegal. It was the Prohibition era, and it overlapped with the Great Depression. This overlap was unfortunate, because the Great Depression was a time when America needed a drink the most. Fast forward to 2010, in the post-Bush years, when even responsible people have a hard time finding work. Now, people are allowed to drink, but what they really could use is some Prohibition. Well, Prohibition Rose that is, the sexy quintet rock ’n’ roll group who give you a real shot of life. This no-nonsense ensemble, with a thundering, brooding sound, was named after a famous woman who ran bootlegging in the Portland area during the Prohibition era. According to the band’s Web site, “She had what everybody wanted, but remained a mystery at the same time.” The band members say they feel that this description also fits them. Emily Belgard, the charismatic frontwoman, certainly promises a lot, without ever going overboard. Swathed in minimal rock garb, she is beautiful and frightening at the same time. She devours the mic and sings with a growl that settles in nicely with the sound that the band, staffed by guitarist Tanner Bean, drummer Andy Bonura, bassist Mia Heldt and guitarist Erich Lennig, lays out for her. Belgard presents the crowd with an encyclopedia of undulations, gyrations and expectations. Her bacchanal dance moves are reminiscent of rock god Scott Weiland from Velvet Revolver and Stone Temple Pilots. Meanwhile Bean, Bonura, Heldt and Lennig each maintain their individual sense of cool while they immerse themselves in the dark, brooding and layered quality of music that they export. All in all, the band, which often plays historic venues like the Viper Room, embody rock ’n’ roll in a classic way without ever, for one second, getting boring. Serve yourself up some Prohibition Rose.

“Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps” Now-May 16 @ Ahmanson Theatre I’m not one for hyperbole, but “The 39 Steps” is one of the best plays I have seen in my life. After three-and-a-half years of theatergoing in Los Angeles and over 10 in New York, it’ been a long time since I have laughed this much or been as consistently entertained. The scene is set in London, 1935, and Richard Hannay, age 37, has just returned home from Canada. He is bored, all of his friends have left the country and so he goes looking for some excitement … at the theater! During Mr. Memory’s performance, a shot goes off, and Annabella Schmidt, the woman who fired, runs to Hannay for help. He takes her back to his flat, where she is murdered during the night. But not before she reveals to Hannay her mission to bust a spy ring and prevent top-secret information from leaving Now open every day for lunch, every night for dinner the country. Fearing he would be blamed for murder, he takes off to get to the bottom of it all. and weekend brunches. Of course, the plot is predictable, but it’s the execution that is ingenious and brilliant. Only four actors play a multitude of roles. Often times they play two people on stage at 6263 Leland Way, Hollywood, CA 90028 Reservations: 323-962-1900 once! Traditionally varenyky can be likened to a pierogi, doughy and stuffed with sauerkraut, cheese and cabbage. Chef Feniger’s versions are layered with spinach and a very light salted cheese, served with one of the best accompaniments I’ve ever had: sour cream and lemon marmalade. I did as instructed – slathered the two-bite creation with the marmalade and let the GALAXYKICK party begin. As I chewed, the layers of flavor were like what I think could be likened to Willy Wonka’s dinner gum, but with a far better ending. The Kaya Toast, a signature of Chef Feniger’s, at first glance looked like stacked slices OUT OF of toast, but that was deceiving. In between was a sweet, creamy coconut jam, and when I dipped that in the accompanying fried egg with salty soy sauce, the balance of salty and sweet was just right. THIS Massamun Beef Curry, inspired from the south of , was one of my favorites. The immediate smell of spiced coconut milk brought back memories of my time spent living in New York with my extended Thai family. GALAXY

the new conference – Big Western Dozen, anyone? – there is actually another thing to consider in all this: Why should the WELCOME Pac-10 expand in the first place? I can tell you what I think is going on – there is a mutiny in the making. THEDIAMONDDISPATCH WELCOME BACK, WOLFIE BY r dov udnick

The success of the Dodgers last season had much to do with the contributions of Los Angeles-area native Randy Wolf. Born and raised in Canoga Park, Wolf attended Pepperdine University before signing with the Philadelphia Phillies fresh out of college. When the Dodgers signed Wolf, first in 2007 and again in 2009, it seemed like a perfect fit – a kind of local-boy-makes-good story. Indeed, last season Wolf made more than good, becoming the Dodgers’ most dependable starter in their NL-best, 95-win season. Wolf’s modest record of 11-7 could not tell the whole story of his importance to the club. He had to his credit an additional 16 no-decisions, and in 11 of those games, the Dodgers went on to win. The consummate workhorse, Wolf never missed a start, leading the league in starts while eating up more innings than any other pitcher on his team. By his own admission, Randy Wolf never had the best stuff. His fastball rarely clocked 90 mph, and his curve and changeup were merely above average on a good day. Wolf’s success seemed to come from sheer grit. He was notorious for allowing runs in the early innings and yet somehow scratching his way out en route to a quality six or seven-inning performance. Wolf had a certain poise and level-headedness that made him stand out among the starting rotation. Whatever the jam he’d find himself in, he would take a big breath and go back to work. It was just this sort of professionalism that made him such an indispensable team leader. For these reasons, it was particularly shocking when the Dodgers promptly dispensed with Wolf at the close of the season, neither offering him a new contract nor arbitration. He was snatched up in short order by the Milwaukee Brewers, who offered him a contract worthy of his talents. This week, those same Brewers are in town, and while Wolf is not scheduled to pitch, his very presence at the stadium at a time when the Dodgers rotation is in near shambles is a reminder of the good thing they let go.
