CLONES, BONES AND TWILIGHT ZONES: PROTECTING THE DIGITAL PERSONA OF THE QUICK, THE DEAD AND THE IMAGINARY By JosephJ. Beard' ABSTRACT This article explores a developing technology-the creation of digi- tal replicas of individuals, both living and dead, as well as the creation of totally imaginary humans. The article examines the various laws, includ- ing copyright, sui generis, right of publicity and trademark, that may be employed to prevent the creation, duplication and exploitation of digital replicas of individuals as well as to prevent unauthorized alteration of ex- isting images of a person. With respect to totally imaginary digital hu- mans, the article addresses the issue of whether such virtual humans should be treated like real humans or simply as highly sophisticated forms of animated cartoon characters. HOW LEGO CONSTRUCTS A CROSS-PROMOTIONAL FRANCHISE WITH VIDEO GAMES by David Wooten A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee August 2013 ABSTRACT HOW LEGO CONSTRUCTS A CROSS-PROMOTIONAL FRANCHISE WITH VIDEO GAMES by David Wooten The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2013 Under the Supervision of Professor Michael Newman The purpose of this project is to examine how the cross-promotional Lego video game series functions as the site of a complex relationship between a major toy manufacturer and several media conglomerates simultaneously to create this series of licensed texts. The Lego video game series is financially successful outselling traditionally produced licensed video games. The Lego series also receives critical acclaim from both gaming magazine reviews and user reviews. By conducting both an industrial and audience address study, this project displays how texts that begin as promotional products for Hollywood movies and a toy line can grow into their own franchise of releases that stills bolster the original work. -

For Exhibitors October 26, 2020 Screendollars About Films, the Film Industry No. 140 Newsletter and Cinema Advertising In 1926, Warner Bros. Pictures, then a small, struggling studio, began a partnership with the Vitaphone Corporation to use its sound-on-disc technology to produce films with synchronized playback of sound with visual images. WB made a series of one-reel sound short films to demonstrate (Click to Play) the technology, playing them before other features. Audiences responded so enthusiastically that Warner Bros. was convinced to bet big on talking motion pictures as the next big thing in movies. Their first feature-length film to use the Vitaphone system was The Jazz Singer, which premiered at Warners’ Theatre in New York on October 6, 1928. It starred Al Jolson, a famous singer and Broadway star of the day. The film included two short scenes in which Jolson’s spoken word was synchronized to the picture, delivering life-like dialog in real-time that thrilled movie goers, comparable to the most immersive, multi-sensory special effects in today’s cinema. Il Rapporto 2008 su “Il Mercato e l’Industria del Cinema in Italia” ha lo scopo primario di colmare questa lacuna e di offrire agli operatori e agli analisti un quadro più ampio possibile di un universo che attraversa la cultura e la società del nostro Paese. Il Rapporto è stato realizzato con questo spirito dalla Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo in collaborazione con Cinecittà Luce S.p.A., ed è il frutto della ricerca condotta da un’équipe di studiosi sulla base di una pluralità di fonti e di dati statistici rigorosi. Dedicated to the work of emerging, innovative filmmakers, Good Machine has produced or co-produced films by, among others, Ang Lee, Todd Solondz, Nicole Holofcener, Ed Burns, Cheryl Dunye and Hal Hartley. Beginning with Tui Shou (Pushing Hands) (1992), the first collaboration between Good Machine and director Ang Lee, The Museum of Modern Art presents eight feature films and five shorts from February 13 through 23, 2001 at the Roy and Niuta Titus Theatre 1. "Good Machine proves that audiences do want to be entertained intelligently and engaged substantively," remarks Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film and Video, who organized the series. "Their achievements are reflected in this Tenth Anniversary series and are, in large part, due to Good Machine's collaborations with filmmakers and its respect for the creative process." In addition to producing and co-producing films, Good Machine has gone on to establish an international sales company involved in distributing diverse and unusual works such as Joan Chen's Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl (1998) and Lars Von Trier's Dancer in the Dark (2000). -
