ABSTRACT Background and Aim: One of the spices of compositae is the Sclerorhachis platyrachis that is Iranian native. This aromatic plant has been known as bacterial growth inhibitor. This study have been attempted to investigate antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity effect of Sclerorhachis platyrachis extractson the MCF-7 cell line. Materials and Methods: The Hexane (HE), Chloroform (CE), Ethyl acetate (EE), Methanolic extracts (ME) of Sclerorhachis platyrachis leaves prepared by usingmaceration method. The DPPH assay was used for determination of antioxidant activity. Also, total phenolic content measured. The cytotoxicity of the extracts on MCF-7 and HEK-293 cells evaluated using MTT assay in both 48h and 72h. Results: evaluation of antioxidant activity indicated that radical scavenging ability was as ascorbic acid> ME > EE > CE > HE, While, total phenolic content was as CE>ME>EE>HE. The highest and the lowest cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells were related to CE and ME respectively. Except for ethyl acetate extract, all extract were non toxic on the HEK-293 cells. Conclusion: Our findings showed that the chloroform extract of aerial part of Sclerorhachis platyrachis had the strongest effect against breast cancer carcinoma (MCF-7). Whereas, the extracts of this plant had no cytotoxicity on the normal cells. The area, here defined to include Turkey, the Caucasus, N Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and adjacent parts of Pakistan and Central Asia, has 161 genera restricted to it. By far, the greatest numbers of the endemic genera are in Apiaceae , Brassicaceae and Asteraceae ; many are morphologically isolated and occur at random throughout the area. Non-endemic genera with relevant distributions in the area are also discussed, several having a major concentration in Central Asia/Afghanistan and radiate westwards from there reaching a limit in SE Turkey/N Iraq. Also in these and other non-endemic genera, there are many species confined to the west (Turkey) or the east (Afghanistan) but very few are distributed throughout. The paper attempts to provide a framework for future research. It draws attention to the need for a more precise terminology in discussing phytochoria and questions the validity of many currently widely used terms including Irano-Turanian. Keywords: Central Asia, endemism, Irano-Turanian, phytogeography Introduction “L’Orient” of Boissier covered: (1) Greece and its islands and European Turkey; (2) Crimea, Transcaucasus and Caucasus; (3) Egypt to the first cataracts and the Arabian Peninsula till the line of the tropics; (4) Asia Minor, Armenia, Syria and Mesopotamia; (5) Persia, Afghanistan and Baluchistan and (6) S Turkestan to the line cutting the Aral Sea in two.

Florian Wagner iv Abstract Plant systematics, the study of taxonomy, phylogeny and evolutionary processes in plants has undergone considerable progress in the last decades. The application of modern molecular approaches and DNA-sequencing techniques in the field has led to an improved inventory of biodiversity and a better understanding of evolutionary processes shaping the biological diversity on our planet. The increased availability of molecular and genomic data has particularly facilitated the investigation of shallowly diverged and taxonomically complex taxon-groups, which is challenging due to minor morphological differences, low genetic differentiation and/or hybridization among taxa. The present thesis investigates species delimitation, hybridization and polyploidization in the recently diverged genera Leucanthemum Mill. and Rhodanthemum B.H. Wilcox & al. of the subtribe Leucantheminae K.Bremer & Humphries (Compositae, Anthemideae) by applying Sanger-, 454-pyro-, and restriction site associated

2 Taxonomy and Biosystematics, 9th Year, No. 31, Summer 2017 Palynological Study of Tribe Anthemideae (Asteraceae) in Iran Nayyereh Olanj 1*, Ali Sonboli 2, Seyedeh Bahereh javadi 3 1 Assistant Professor Department of Biology, Faculty of Basic Science, Malayer University, Malayer, Iran 2 Assistant Professor Department of Biology, Medicinal Plants & Drugs Research Institute, Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran 3 M. S. & Researcher, Department of Botany, Iranian Research Institute of Plant Protection, Tehran, Iran Abstract The pollen grains of 32 populations from 13 genera belonging to the tribe Anthemideae-Asteraceae (one to three populations of each species) from Iran were studied by light and scanning electron microscopes. Pollen grains of all the studied samples were tricolporate. Based on pollen shape, 55, 22, 15 and 8 % were oblate-spheroidal, suboblate, spheroidal and prolate-spheroidal, respectively. The pollen grains with oblate-spheroidal and spheroidal shapes were common among the genera studied. The pollen grains of all taxa were operculate and tricolporate. The pollen ornamentations were echinate perforate except Artemisia that was spinulose non-perforate in SEM. The dendrogram obtained from UPGMA method based on four quantitative and qualitative characters was classified into two main clusters. The first cluster (A) includes populations of Artemisia which show "Artemisia- type" pollen, while the second cluster (B) comprises of the rest of the taxa which have pollen grains of "Anthemis- type". The subcluster B-1 possesses samples with bigger (polar axis 28.64–32.5 µm and equatorial axis 30.65–33.2 µm) pollen grains and subcluster B-2 comprised of populations with smaller (polar axis 21.69-30.38 µm and equatorial axis 23.29–32.4 µm) pollen grains.

  • Lipid and Essential Oil Constituents of Cota Hamzaoglui Özbek & Vural
Özek G, Özbek MU, Arslan M. JOTCSA. 2018; 5(3): 1361-1370. RESEARCH ARTICLE Lipid and essential oil constituents of Cota hamzaoglui Özbek & Vural (Asteraceae) Gülmira Özek* , Mehmet Ufuk Özbek2 , Münevver Arslan3 1Anadolu University, Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacognosy, 26470, Eskişehir, Turkey 2 Gazi University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology, 06500, Teknikokullar, Ankara, Turkey. 3 Research Institute for Forest Soil and Ecology, p.b. 61, 26160, Eskişehir, Turkey Abstract: In the present work, lipids and essential oil constituents of endemic Cota hamzaoglui Özbek & Vural were investigated with GC-FID/MS techniques. The fatty acids fraction was isolated with liquid-liquid extraction from the herb with Folch method and then methylated with BF3 reagent. Linolenic, linoleic, oleic, and hexadecanoic acids were found to be the main fatty acids. The unsaturated fatty acids (66.0%) prevailed upon saturated (33.6%) ones. The essential oil was characterized with high percentage of the fatty acids (34.7%), alkanes (14.0%) and aliphatic aldehydes (8.3%). The present study is the first report on chemical composition of Cota hamzaoglui Özbek & Vural lipids and essential oil. Keywords: Cota hamzaoglui Özbek & Vural; essential oil, lipids, GC-FID/MS.
