Logical reasoning is the surest way to overcome the unknown. The best aid to reasoning effectively is having the knowledge and an understanding of the things that have previ- ously been determined or discovered by others. Having an understanding of the reasons things are the way they are and how they got that way can help an individual to utilize his or her resources more effectively. I want my students to realize that changes that have taken place on the earth in the past have had an effect on them. Why are some towns in Indiana subject to flooding, whereas others are not? Why are cemeteries built on old beach fronts in Northwest Indiana? Why would it be easier to dig a basement in Valparaiso than in Bloomington? These things are a direct result of the glaciers that advanced southward over Indiana during the last Ice Age. The history of the land upon which we live is fascinating. Why are there large granite boulders nested in some of the fields of northern Indiana since Indiana has no granite bedrock? They are known as glacial erratics, or dropstones, and were formed in Canada or the upper Midwest hundreds of millions of years ago. -

To make lamp oil, Hawaiians traditionally took nuts from the kukui, now a symbol of Molokai. -

Sacket’s Harbor during the War of 1812 The site of two military engagements during the War of 1812, Sacket’s Harbor served as the site of a decisive action in the battle for the Great Lakes. Located on the eastern end of Lake Ontario in New York State, Sacket’s Harbor was a well protected harbor on the lake, only forty miles from Britain’s naval base at Kingston. Originally founded and owned by Augustus Sacket, the land was a natural harbor with abundant natural resources and a haven for smugglers after the Embargo Act of 1807. Sacket sold the land for use as a naval base by the United States and by the time war broke out, Sacket’s Harbor was the major shipbuilding community on the Great Lakes with an original population of about one hundred growing to 5000 to 12,000 during the war as builders, carpenters, merchants, soldiers and sailors all migrated to the area. Forts and defenses were constructed and by 1812 Sacket’s Harbor was New York’s third largest population center behind only New York City and Albany. Prominent shipbuilders Henry Eckford and brothers Adam and Noah Brown operated in Sacket’s Harbor. British strategy on Lake Ontario included eliminating American shipbuilding capability as a means to controlling the lake and targeted the town at Sacket’s Harbor as early as the summer of 1812. On 19 July 1812 five British naval ships approached Sacket’s Harbor, demanded surrender, and fired on the brig USS Oneida under the command of Captain Melancthon Woolsey. -

Niagara River Area of Concern Canadian Section Status of Beneficial Use Impairments September 2010 The Niagara River is a 58-km waterway connecting Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. The Canadian section of the Niagara River Area of Concern extends along the entire length of the Canadian side of the Niagara River, and includes the Canadian side of Niagara Falls and the Welland River watershed. The Niagara River drains extensive farmland on the Canadian side and passes through heavily industrialized, residential and parkland areas on the United States side. More than one half of the flow of the river is diverted for electrical power generation on both sides of the river. The river supports one of the largest and most diverse concentrations of gulls in the world, and its gorge and cliffs below the falls are habitat for some of the highest concentrations of rare plant species in Ontario. Environmental concerns on the Canadian side of the Niagara River Area of Concern have focused on the loss and degradation of wetlands and fish habitat, and the resulting impacts on fish and wildlife populations that depend on this habitat. Most of these impacts are associated with non-point sources of pollution from rural areas of the Niagara–Welland River basin, particularly runoff of pesticides and nutrients. (By contrast, most of the environmental concerns in the United States section are associated with toxic contamination from past industrial management practices, particularly the seepage of toxic wastes from chemical dumps, and the discharge of municipal wastes.) PARTNERSHIPS IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION The Niagara River was designated an Area of Concern in 1987 under the Canada–United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. -

ABSTRACT Nadine Kopp. The Influence of the War of 1812 on Great Lakes Shipbuilding. (Under the Direction of Dr. Bradley Rodgers) Department of History, January 2012. The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether the War of 1812 influenced ship construction techniques on the Great Lakes. During the War of 1812, much of the fighting in the North American theater of war primarily took place along the Niagara frontier and later along the St. Lawrence River. From the outset, both the Americans and British realized that gaining the upper hand in the conflict depended upon control of the Great Lakes. Critical to achieving the advantage was the development of a significant and powerful inland navy, which led to a shipbuilding race on both shores. The primary question raised surrounding Great Lakes ship construction in the early nineteenth century is whether or not this large scale event, the War of 1812, permanently influenced the way in which ships were constructed once the war was over. To answer this question, this study examines diagnostic attributes of archaeologically examined wrecks from the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain from before, during and after the War of 1812 to find similarities and difference in their design and construction The three time periods have been defined as the period before the War of 1812, from the French and Indian War (1754 to 1763), when British sailing ships first appeared on the Great Lakes, up to 1811; the period of the War of 1812 itself (1812-1814); and the period after the war leading up to the opening of the Welland Canal (1829) and the widespread use of steam engines on the Great Lakes (1830s-1840s).
