CHAPTER 6 EXISTING ENVIRONMENT 6 EXISTING ENVIRONMENT 6.1 INTRODUCTION

The existing environment of the proposed project site and its vicinity area has been assessed based on field surveys carried out from August 2018 to March 2019 in order to determine it’s existing condition which would have either direct or indirect impact due to the activities from the project. The study components on primary data including other secondary data sources are as below which will be cross reference with the impact of project activities:

 Landuse;  Topography;  Soil;  Geology;  Hydrology and water resources;  Meteorology;  Flora and fauna;  Ambient air;  Noise level;  Odour;  Groundwater;  River water quality;  Socio Economic; and  Health.

6.2 LAND USE

The existing land use within and the surrounding areas is for agriculture where sitting next to it is the existing landfill. The two plots of land for proposed transfer station are presently an oil palm plantation as shown in the Figure 6.1. Under the Rancangan Tempatan Daerah Pontian 2030 (Penggantian) which was gazetted in 2012, the land is zoned for Infrastructure and utility as shown in the Figure 6.2. Thus, the change of land uses is permittable. However, any housing development within 500 m buffer zones considered as incompatible and should incorporated proactive mitigation measures. The nearest sensitive receptors within 3 km radius are shown in the Figure 6.3.

6.3 TOPOGRAPHY

The topography of the proposed project site is referred from topography map of , 1990 sheet number 4451, published by the Director of National Mapping, . The topography surrounding the project site is flat to undulating. Topography in the immediate vicinity is in range elevation from 16 m to 42 m above mean sea level (MSL) (Figure 6.4). Areas with elevation less than 50 m can be used for development purposes (RTD, 2030).

Based on topography map 1990 sheet number 4451, there are a building scattered within the project site. However site survey conducted on 28th May 2018 found that the project site is comprise with oil palm plantation. There are no building within the project site as shown in Figure 6.5.

SECOND SCHEDULE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (EIA) for the Proposed Development of Solid Waste Transfer Station, on 12.474 Acres of Land on Lots 1336 & 1337, Pekan Nenas, Mukim Jeram Batu, Daerah Pontian, Johor Darul Takzim for Jabatan Pengurusan Sisa Pepejal Negara (JPSPN) 6.4 SOIL

Surface soils in the proposed project site have been mapped as part of the - Soil Association by the Malayan Soil Survey (Figure 6.6). This Soil Association encompasses a rather wide group of soils derived from a mixed formation of acid volcanic rocks including rhyolite, rhyolitic tuffs and lavas, schistose rhyolite, and dacite (Null et al., 1965). The soil pattern of the association is quite complex as the extrusive rocks occur intermittently in small patches throughout a landscape composed largely of shales and granitic rocks which make it difficult to delineate each series with any measure of accuracy on this type of survey However, boundaries have been drawn around areas where the soils most commonly occur (Null et al., 1965).

6.5 GEOLOGY

6.5.1 Geomorphology

The proposed Project site is located on the western foot slopes of a NNW-SSE trending ridge that rises to 545 ft above sea-level at its peak. The Project site is located between 15 and 40 m above sea-level and gently slopes towards the SE at an angle of about 5°. To the west and south of the Project site is found a broad, flat coastal plain, whilst to the east of the NNW-SSE trending ridge is located the Reservoir for water supply to City.

6.5.2 Regional Geology

The general area where the proposed Project is located has been mapped by the Geological Survey of Malaysia (now Jabatan Mineral dan Geosains Malaysia) and a Map Bulletin published by Burton (1973). Sedimentary and granitic rocks as well as alluvial sediments are found in the general area (Figure 6.7). The granitic rocks are part of the Gunung Pulai massif and classified as hornblende bearing adamellite granite. On the western side of Gunung Pulai (and immediately east of the Project area) is underly the Gunong Pulai Volcanic Member of the Jurong Formation (now considered as the Gemas Formation). This Member has been metamorphosed by the granite intrusion and in consequence forms a prominent ridge, rising to an elevation of 303 m (995 feet). This ridge trends NNW-SSE and is separated by a broad valley from Gunung Pulai at its southern end.

The proposed Project area is located within the Bukit Resam Clastic Member of the Jurong Formation (now considered Gemas Formation). The Bukit Resam Clastic Member consisting a mainly of frequent alternations of shale and sandstone with minor beds of siltstone and conglomerate, together with a few of volcanic tuff (Burton, 1973).

Two (2) sequences of alluvial sediments are reported in the general area by Burton (1963); an older sequence of Pleistocene age, and a younger is Recent sequence. The older sequence was called the Old Alluvium (now considered as Simpang Formation) and consists of semi-consolidated sands and clays with boulder beds. The younger sequence (now considered as Beruas Formation) is found in the flood-plains of the larger rivers as well as the coastal plain and comprises unconsolidated sands and clays as well as organic matter.

The proposed Project area is underlain by sedimentary rocks that have been mapped as the Bukit Resam Clastic Member of the Jurong (now Gemas) Formation of Triassic age. The lithology of the rocks are consisting of alternating sequences of shale and sandstone together with siltstone, conglomerate and volcanic tuff are to be expected (Burton, 1973). An abundance of fossil shallow water lamellibranchs in similar rocks in Singapore indicates their deposition in a shallow marine environment. Plant fossils discovered in it have not yet been determined, but a number of fossil collections from Singapore clearly demonstrate an Upper Triassic age for the unit (Burton, 1973).

6.6 HYDROLOGY

The proposed project site is lies on Sg. Pontian Kechil Catchment area. There are no tributary or river flows through the project site. The surface runoff from the Project site will flow to south east of the project site and discharge into earth drain located at south of the project site and subsequently flowing into tributary of Sg. Pontian Kechil and finally flow into Sg. Pontian Kechil. The drainage system within the project site is as shown in Figure 6.8 and the river pattern at around the project site is as shown in Figure 6.9 and Plate 6.1.

The project area next to the landfill is located within the Sg. Pontian Kechil basin that has a catchment area of about 82 km2. The river basin that has elongated river catchment shape as shown in (Figure 6.10) contributed to low-peaked and broad hydrographs. From flood record in (DID, 2016) shown in Table 6.1, the area is not affected by any major floods event since it was located far upstream of the Sg. Pontian Kechil basin. However, downstream areas in the Sg. Pontian Kechil and other river basins were identified in the flood record.

There are no water intake/ water supply scheme at the downstream of Sg. Pontian. Based on Rancangan Tempatan Daerah Pontian 2030, the main aquaculture area is located at Selat and Sg. Pulai area. There are no aquaculture activities along the Sg. Pontian Kechil as confirmed by the Jabatan Perikanan Daerah Pontian via letter Reference No.: Prk.Pont.4066 dated 18th February 2019.

Study of hydrogeology of the site has been carried out to locate the PNTS hydrologic setting that prevents hazardous constituents from migrating into groundwater. Through this the consultant aimed at minimizes negative impacts of PNTS on the groundwater. In order to assure the groundwater table at the selected site is at an acceptable depth comprehensive knowledge of the groundwater regime will include:

 Direction of flow and gradient rate of flow including long-term and seasonal fluctuations;  Permeability or transmissivity of the outcropping strata, with maximum and minimum values;  Distribution, thickness and depth of aquifers including the locations of any spring;  Groundwater level; and  Groundwater protection or recharge zones.

Boreholes were drilled and trial pits are excavated to collect soil and groundwater samples for laboratory geotechnical and chemical analysis. The preliminary results of the ground investigation indicate that variable made ground was present across the site. Below the made ground, natural superficial deposits of have been examined and able to show trending flow direction. The Department of Mineral and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG) had installed around 50 groundwater monitoring wells in , Pontian, , Keluang, , , and . The reported groundwater quality was good. The groundwater table results from the borehole has indicate site specific existing groundwater contamination.
