  • BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play
Reference and Resource Guide Camille A. Brown’s BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play draws from dance, music, and hand game traditions of West and Sub-Saharan African cultures, as fltered through generations of the African- American experience. The result is a depiction of the complexities in carving out a positive identity as a black female in today’s urban America. The core of this multimedia work is a unique blend of body percussion, rhythmic play, gesture, and self-expression that creates its own lexicon. The etymology of her linguistic play can be traced from pattin’ Juba, buck and wing, social dances and other percussive corollaries of the African drum found on this side of the Atlantic, all the way to jumping double dutch, and dancing The Dougie. Brown uses the rhythmic play of this African-American dance vernacular as the black woman’s domain to evoke childhood memories of self-discovery. Hambone, hambone, where you been? Around the world and back again Let’s use the hambone lyric as a metaphor for what happened culturally to song and dance forms developed in African-American enclaves during the antebellum era. The hambone salvaged from the big house meal made its way to cabins and quarters of enslaved Africans, depositing and transporting favors from soup pot to soup pot, family to family, generation to generation, and providing nourishment for the soul and for the struggle. When dancing and drumming were progressively banned during the 18th century, black people used their creativity and inventiveness to employ their bodies as a beatbox for song and dance.

  • The Circulation of Popular Dance on Youtube
Social Texts, Social Audiences, Social Worlds: The Circulation of Popular Dance on YouTube Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Alexandra Harlig Graduate Program in Dance The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Committee Harmony Bench, Advisor Katherine Borland Karen Eliot Ryan Skinner Copyrighted by Alexandra Harlig 2019 2 Abstract Since its premiere, YouTube has rapidly emerged as the most important venue shaping popular dance practitioners and consumers, introducing paradigm shifts in the ways dances are learned, practiced, and shared. YouTube is a technological platform, an economic system, and a means of social affiliation and expression. In this dissertation, I contribute to ongoing debates on the social, political, and economic effects of technological change by focusing on the bodily and emotional labor performed and archived on the site in videos, comments sections, and advertisements. In particular I look at comments and fan video as social paratexts which shape dance reception and production through policing genre, citationality, and legitimacy; position studio dance class videos as an Internet screendance genre which entextualizes the pedagogical context through creative documentation; and analyze the use of dance in online advertisements to promote identity-based consumption. Taken together, these inquiries show that YouTube perpetuates and reshapes established modes and genres of production, distribution, and consumption. These phenomena require an analysis that accounts for their multivalence and the ways the texts circulating on YouTube subvert existing categories, binaries, and hierarchies. A cyclical exchange—between perpetuation and innovation, subculture and pop culture, amateur and professional, the subversive and the neoliberal—is what defines YouTube and the investigation I undertake in this dissertation.

4 1 2 Hip-Hop’s Irrepressible 3 4 Refashionability 5 6 Phases in the Cultural Production 7 of Black Youth 8 9 WAYNE MARSHALL 10 11 12 13 14 15 Since its first mass media appearances in the early 1980s, hip- hop has 16 served as an increasingly prominent site for discussions about African 17 American cultural production and its relationship to troubling socioeco- 18 nomic indicators for black youth. According to both defenders and detrac- 19 tors, hip- hop reflects its circumstances, giving voice, form, and meaning to 20 the challenging conditions from which it issues, including urban impov- 21 erishment and unemployment, a failing education system, institutional 22 racism and police brutality, and the scourge of drugs and violent crime. As 23 such, hip- hop has both been championed and condemned as a powerfully 24 informing force, shaping the very culture that it would seem to represent 25 by offering powerful scripts, myths, and all manner of cultural resources to 26 be t a ken up a nd reworked by yout h f u l pract it ioner s (R ose 20 0 8; McW hor ter 27 2008). While dramatizing a set of tragic social problems and bringing 28 them to center stage in American and global popular culture, hip- hop 29 stands as neither an easy scapegoat nor a simple solution for policymakers, 30 eluding gross generalization with its wide variety of shapes and forms. 31 Hip- hop’s projection of black male authenticity may appear at times utterly 32 dominant, but such notions have also been shown to be both unstable and 33 remarkably malleable.
