His grandmother taught him to sew at age 9, and he first worked in a Dallas Polo/ Ralph Lauren boutique’s alterations department. He sold a small collection of his own designs to retailer Neiman Marcus in 1980, later partnering with company buyer Tony Longoria. The couple moved to New York in 1988 to establish their business and life together. In 1989, Oldham presented the first season of what would be 10 years of women’s ready- to-wear in a style characterized each year by a kitschy, colorful, fun, glamourous, do- it-yourself sensibility. His work was well-received in the press and recognized by the fashion industry: in 1991, he earned the Council of Fashion Designers’ Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent. In 1992, the New York Times heralded Oldham as fashion’s new “It guy”. By the mid-1990s, Oldham had opened a boutique in New York’s SoHo neighborhood, licensed an eponymous perfume, and appeared regularly on MTV’s hit show House of Style, for which he hosted his own popular segment called Todd Time. He also appeared on MTV’s Crib Crashers: Celebrity Edition with guests like Mariah Carey and Outkast. From 1990 to 1998 he directed music videos for Us3 and Maxi Priest, collaborated with the B-52's and Deee-Lite, and designed clothing for performers including Queen Latifah and The Dixie Chicks. By 1999 Oldham had discontinued his seasonal collections and branched out into other design areas, including designs for the interior remodeling of Miami’s The Tiffany into The Hotel of South Beach, and collaborations with brands Target and La-Z-Boy to create furniture and homewares. In 2007 he joined the cast of the Bravo network’s reality competition show Top Design as a host and later mentor for contestants. Oldham has also published a series of design, photograph, art monographs, and children’s books: his Hand Made Modern series provides creative and affordable craft tutorials for do-it- yourself home design projects. Todd Oldham Studio has also created a line of art supplies and project kits for children called Kids Made Modern. In 2016 the Rhode Island School of Design presented a retrospective exhibition of Oldham’s work, All of Everything. Oldham is also active in philanthropy and social advocacy. He pledged not to use fur or animal products in his designs and has worked with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to raise awareness for their anti-fur campaigns. He has also been involved with AIDS advocacy groups including AIDS Project Los Angeles and Bailey House. - Page 4 - Todd Oldham records Scope and Contents note The collection consists of photographic prints and slides, Polaroid images, line lists, sketches, samples, correspondence and worknotes, and videos documenting Oldham's designs for clothing, accessories, fabric, furniture and household items, and music videos from 1982 to 2004; promotional material for Oldham’s design work such as videos of award shows and television interviews, loose clippings, brochures, and other ephemera; videotapes documenting Oldham’s work on programming for the MTV network, such as House of Style and Crib Crashers: Celebrity Edition, and other networks; and videotapes that were sent to and collected by Oldham.
