Wouldn't It Be Nice
wouldn’t it be nice by lewis shiner hat if? It’s not just science fiction and fantasy that asks this w question, it’s all of fiction. What if a young student murdered his landlady to prove his moral superiority? What if a woman survived the Civil War and three marriages only to find true love too late? It’s also the question by which we transform ourselves. What if I quit my job and moved to the desert? What if I turned myself loose to create “a teenage symphony to God?” The Icarus who attempted that teenage symphony in 1966 is now 53. For Brian Wilson it’s been thirty years of struggle: with drugs and diet, with people who want to run his life for him, with the intensity of his own feelings. The good news is that Wilson’s life is finally his own again. He is newly married to a woman named Melinda, who is calm and sweet and loving with him. He has a new house in the safety of a gated community high above the city. And he is back in the public eye with two new albums and a movie on the Disney channel. The film is I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times, directed by producer-of-the- moment Don Was. The soundtrack is a kind of Best of Brian Wilson, live in the studio with crack session players like Jim Keltner, Benmont Tench, and Waddy Wachtel. This is not only a wonderful album in its own right, it represents a healing of other wounds. -

Style and S(t)imulation: Popular Magazines, or the Aestheticization of Postsoviet Russia Abstract The new Postsoviet genre of the glossy magazine that inundated bookstalls and kiosks in Russia's urban centers served as both an advertisement for a life of luxury and an advice column on chic style. Conventionalized signs of affluence, models of beauty, "educational" articles on topics ranging from the history and significance of ties ot correct behavior at a first-class estaurr ant filled the pages of magazines intended to provide an accelerated course in etiquette, appearance, and appurtenances for Russia's newly wealthy. The lessons in spending, demeanor, and taste emphasized moneyed visibility. -

THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY or me, the defi nition of insanity was not “ doing the same thing Fover and over and expecting dif fer ent results.” Instead, it was getting within a few months of graduation and then enrolling as a sophomore at a dif fer ent school, especially when I barely made it out of Blackbriar alive. I hadn’t been to public school since fi fth grade, and nerves clawed at my stomach lining until I tasted extra bile. I can’t believe I’m doing this. Bitter wind blew, cutting through my jacket. As I studied the building, the parking lot was louder and more chaotic than I ex- pected, guys horsing around despite the January chill. Sock hats, rubber bracelets, plastic chokers, people with words on their butts, bright T- shirts, heavy eyeliner, skater boys, people with un- smart phones— I’d forgotten that the world once looked this way. But when I was twelve, I didn’t exactly pay attention to the details. The school swam in cement and pavement. There seemed to —-1 be two or three parking lots, one dedicated entirely to students. —0 —+1 1105-64744_ch01_2P.indd05-64744_ch01_2P.indd 1 44/9/16/9/16 22:52:52 PPMM A couple of fast- food places had sprung up across the street, prob- ably catering to people who left for lunch. As for the building, it was made of faded stone, casting the red trim along win dows and roof into sharper relief. Somehow it seemed like the whole place was dripping with blood. -

The Storm Also Rises by Tom Scheft
The Storm Also Rises by Tom Scheft (published in the June 26, 1992 issue of Goldmine) * * * “You guys [the Rising Storm] really helped define the ’60s for me … much more than the super groups like the Beatles and the Stones.” Ron Fantasia, record collector “[We’re] like a dancing bear. It’s not how well it dances, but that it dances at all.” Bob Cohan, guitarist for the Rising Storm “I certainly can’t explain it. It’s curious and amazing - and obviously flattering - to think that something six high school seniors did for fun 25 years ago now is considered valuable to anyone other than those six people.” Todd Cohen, bassist for the Rising Storm * * * A while back, a friend showed me Goldmine’s 1989 article on the top 100 collectible record albums. I had been told the Rising Storm was a perennial pick, and there we were: The Rising Storm. Remnant 3571. A Calm Before The Rising Storm. 1968. $500. Mono. One of the collectible garage/frat records of the ’60s. Recorded by a group of college students in Massachusetts, this album features covers of Love’s “Message To Pretty,” the Remains’ “Don’t Look Back” and Wilson Pickett’s standby, “In The Midnight Hour.” The group got together a few years back for a reunion and recorded another album. Well . almost. First, the title was just Calm Before. Second, the year was 1967. Third, that 500- buck tag sounds reasonable, although an Italian collector recently paid $1,300 for an unopened copy. [Editor’s note: All prices in the article quoted were based on near mint quality, not mint -- i.e., unopened -- and were compiled from 1989 sales figures.] Fourth, the Storm did covers, but there were also five originals on the album. -
